Chapter 103: The Surveillance Grid (Part 1)

The corridors of the Iron Estate were quiet, but it was a tense, heavily guarded silence.

Rolf walked beside . His heavy boots thudded against the marble floors.

He looked completely out of place among the pristine statues and polished brass pillars, but the silver armor plating he wore demanded absolute respect from the passing guards.

"I still do not like this political garbage, Boss," Rolf grunted softly.

"Give a monster with teeth and claws any day. This invisible war gives a headache."

"A monster with claws only kills what is in front of it, Rolf," I replied, my baritone voice echoing slightly.

"A man with information can kill an entire kingdom without ever drawing a sword. Anise was right. We have been so focused on leveling up our physical bodies that we completely ignored the shadow war happening on the surface."

We reached the heavy oak doors of the Pri Minister’s war room.

Two Clockwork Inquisitors stood at attention, their glowing furnace eyes scanning us before they silently pushed the doors open.

Inside, the room was dark. The large mahogany table in the center was illuminated by a single, glowing holographic map of the capital.

King Regent Marquee Hardsteel stood at the head of the table.

His chanical blue eye whirred and clicked rapidly. Standing in the corner, blending perfectly with the shadows, was Chief Inquisitor Silas.

The head of the secret police looked exhausted. A bloodstained silver ring sat on the table between them.

"You called, and we are here," I announced, stepping into the room.

"Tell you found the rat in the Registry."

Silas stepped out of the shadows. His dark armor clinked softly.

"We found him," Silas stated, his voice a gravelly rasp.

"It was Lord Aris. A high ranking Ley Line Monitor. He had unrestricted access to the spatial anomaly logs and the diplomatic courier routes."

"So he is the one who tipped off the Faceless Guild assassins," Rolf growled, his golden eyes narrowing. "Where is he? Let have ten minutes in a cell with him."

"You cannot interrogate a vegetable," Hardsteel interjected, his heavy tallic voice filling the room.

"Lord Aris is completely brain dead. Silas brought him in for questioning, but the mont we applied truth serums, his mind literally liquefied."

I crossed my arms, the brass pistons in my Vanguard Arm hissing softly.

"A magical failsafe. Suicide by mind control."

"Exactly," Silas nodded grimly.

"It was a high tier Succubus charm. A parasitic curse woven so deeply into his brain that it altered his very reality. He truly believed he was in love with his handler. Valerius Thorne did not just bribe a clerk. He and his sister, Seraphina, are planting sleeper agents across our entire infrastructure."

Hardsteel slamd his human fist onto the table. The holographic map flickered violently.

"They are not just tracking your movents, Grik. Aris was intercepting the official diplomatic letters I dispatched for the Continental Summit. He was subtly altering the wording before they reached the border couriers. Valerius is actively trying to blind us politically and paint the Forge as a hostile, unstable warzone before the Summit even begins."

"We are fighting a war in the dark," Silas admitted, frustration leaking into his professional tone.

"My Inquisitors are the best assassins in the world. But we cannot hunt what we cannot see. If the Zenith Academy is using high tier mind magic, traditional interrogation and scouting are entirely useless. They will always be three steps ahead of us."

I looked at the glowing map of the city. Anise’s words from the foundry echoed in my mind.

Because in tis of war, the one who can handle the information and transmit it the fastest has the advantage.

"They have the advantage because they are using magic," I said softly.

Hardsteel and Silas both looked at .

"Magic leaves a trace," I explained, stepping up to the table.

"Spells cause ripples in the ambient mana. A Ley Line Monitor can track a teleportation portal. A mage can sense a scrying spell. Valerius thinks he is safe because he is playing the magical ga better than you are."

"What are you proposing, Grik?" Hardsteel asked, his chanical eye zooming in on my face.

"We stop playing their ga entirely," I declared, a predatory smile stretching across my face.

"They expect us to counter their scrying with anti scrying wards. They expect magical spies. So, we are going to use sothing they cannot possibly comprehend."

I raised my organic hand and pointed to the sprawling industrial districts on the map.

"Nyssa and Master Brakka have been studying the pre industrial technology we pulled from the Great Iron Labyrinth. We found schematics for localized resonance frequencies. Soundwaves that travel through the air without using a single drop of mana."

Silas narrowed his eyes.

"Soundwaves? You an shouting?"

"I an radio," I said, translating the Earth concept into terms they could grasp.

"We can build tiny, chanical earpieces. They run on pure kinetic vibration and crystal resonance, completely devoid of magical signatures. Your Inquisitors can wear them and communicate across the entire city instantly and silently."

Hardsteel’s gears clicked rapidly as his brilliant engineering mind processed the implications.

"Instantaneous, silent communication without magical ripples," the King Regent murmured in absolute awe.

"If a Zenith mage tries to scan for surveillance, they will find absolutely nothing. It will be completely invisible to them."

"Exactly," I confird.

"We build a central broadcasting hub in my underground laboratory at the Obsidian Bungalow. Nyssa can route the frequencies. I will act as the System Administrator. We turn the entire Kingdom of Iron and Steam into an unhackable surveillance grid."

"We can coordinate synchronized strikes," Silas realized. A terrifying, lethal excitent bled into the assassin’s voice.

"If my squads can communicate in real ti without triggering magical alarms, we can sweep the entire city in a single night. We can locate every single sleeper agent by their erratic mana signatures and execute them simultaneously before Valerius even realizes his network is compromised."

"Operation Static," I nad it, looking from the spymaster to the King Regent.

"We have forty eight days until the Continental Summit begins. Give five days to have Nyssa and Brakka manufacture the earpieces and set up the grid. On the sixth day, we purge the rats."

Hardsteel stood tall. The crushing pressure of a true ruler radiated from his half tal fra.

"You have a blank check from the Royal Treasury, Grik. Take whatever raw materials you need from the state foundries. If you can build this surveillance grid, we will not just blind Valerius Thorne. We will cut off his hands."

"Consider it done," I said, giving the King Regent a sharp nod.

I turned and walked out of the war room, Rolf falling into step right beside .

The political battlefield had completely shifted.

’Oh dear Valerius! How I wish to put my knife into your head and finish you off for good! But my war is not with you. This war will be for the Unification of the Continent and then the whole world.’

The shadow war had officially evolved.
