It took lly a mont to understand what Ning was saying.
"Wait! You want to sign up with our agency?" she asked in a flustered voice. "Wh-why?"
"Because I want to," Ning said. "And because I don’t want to deal with the other agencies."
lly gulped a little, her thoughts racing a thousand miles a minute. "That’s an excellent choice. With the Star Hero Agency, you will—"
Ning stopped her. "Keep the sales pitch to yourself. I’m not interested in any of that," he said. "I will join your agency, but I have a few requirents to doing so."
"What... what requirents?" she asked.
"As you know, I help the detectives with their homicide missions. I still want to keep doing that," Ning said. "I don’t want any responsibilities to the agency coming in the way of that. That... is the main thing, really. But that is surely going to cause so other issues with your contracts, so change it accordingly. I won’t ask for an advance pay or even a higher salary than what the others get. I just want to continue helping the detectives."
lly fell silent for a mont, the strange requests not being ones she had heard before.
"I... can make most of it happen," she said. "We also have a few tests before you can join as a hero, but I’m sure we can waive away those requirents."
"Is it governnt-mandated?" Ning asked.
"No, it’s just sothing our agency does to make sure we’re only taking in capable heroes," lly said.
"Then that’s fine. Keep it. I don’t mind getting tested," Ning said. "I also have to get tested for my flying permits. You guys have a testing area, right?"
"We do," lly said, breathing much more calmly now. She had had a few questions roaming around in her head regarding Ning, but it wouldn’t be appropriate to ask him about it right now.
The rest of the ride was silent, but that seed okay since they weren’t that far away from the agency anyway. They arrived there a few minutes later, driving in through massive steel gates into a giant rectangular building with the front half covered entirely in glass.
Ning got out of the car and stared at the massive building, a logo drawn on its lower half. The logo was a giant five-pointed star, slightly tilted to the side, with the image of a human in a cape standing proudly within it.
The words ’STAR HERO AGENCY’ were written in bold letters below it.
A group of n and won in tight suits sward out of the doors, quickly surrounding Ning with their wide grins and words of welco.
Ning hated all of this, but he still smiled and nodded to each person that tried to introduce themselves. He could rember each na if he wanted to, but he let the words pass him by, not choosing to bother rembering any of them.
He soon entered the building, fewer people surrounding him now, and entered an elevator with nearly thirteen other people. Four people had to move out before the elevator could work again, taking ten of them to the fourth floor.
Things were much calr here, and Ning was quickly taken to a eting room with the others. lly would usually not have been here, but because Ning had contacted her directly, she was given special permission to join them.
Ning sat down and the others sat around the giant table as well, taking in the view of the city from their open wall.
"Again, I cannot explain how incredibly happy we are that you have joined us," the old man who sat in the main chair said. Ning hadn’t cared for his na, but it was now there before him on a small plate.
’Tyler Gurmac. President, huh?’ he thought.
"Would you mind explaining why you chose us?" the president asked.
"Did you hear about Waveshot?" Ning asked.
The president’s face fell. "It’s a tragic matter and a blot on our reputation for sure. But that was outside of our control."
Ning laughed. "You want to explain this one?" he said as he looked toward lly.
lly hesitated for a mont before turning toward the president. "Sir Valen here is a counselor to the Limaro PD, and he was responsible for Waveshot being caught and apprehended."
The explanation caused everyone’s face to turn into a different emotion. So looked sour, so were surprised. Most were just fascinated by the revelation.
"So you ca here out of pity?" the president asked.
"No, because one of your employees was smart enough to hand her card," Ning said. "I don’t care where I go to, so I ca here. Speaking of which—"
Ning brought out his tiny phone and played with so settings. Just a few seconds after he activated incoming calls and ssages again, his phone was bombarded with notifications and calls.
Ning quickly turned it off again.
"Would you mind letting the others know that I’ve already chosen your agency? I would rather not miss so vital calls because everyone else keeps calling as well."
The president quickly nodded. "Yes! Absolutely."
He rely had to gesture to one of his subordinates, who quickly left the room to deal with it.
Ning was about to close his phone too, but he saw one of the ssages was from Larissa herself.
[Where are you? We have work to do.]
He smiled slightly and closed the phone.
"It appears I’m in a bit of a hurry, so let us drop all formalities," Ning said. "I will join your agency. I’ve already explained to Miss lly here what I am willing to do and what I want done for . If there is anything important, then we can discuss it. But if not, then we can move on to other important things."
lly quickly tore a piece of paper from a small notebook of hers and passed it over to the president. The old man looked through the piece of paper, surprised by Ning’s request.
"Are you sure?" he asked, looking back up at Ning. "Is this really all you want?"
