Chen Bitong looked at Chen Chuan for a while before nodding. His expression turned stern as he motioned around himself. “Do you see these, Captain Chen?”
Chen Chuan looked down. When he saw the corpses from a distance, he found them grotesque. Now that he was closer, he found that the “corpses” weren’t the dead bodies of humans at all. They were so kind of modified creatures.
They were the size of apes, but were hairless and had thick, durable skin like a cocoon. Their eyes were thin and narrow, and their mouths protruded outward. Behind them were sharp canines.
“These are White Plagues, bioweapons often used by the royal family. No matter where the imperial army goes, they bring these creatures along. We often fight against them at the frontlines. While they aren’t very dangerous, there are certain things you must pay attention to,” Chen Bitong said, and as Chen Chuan listened, he learned that the royal family had modified these creatures for modern warfare.
They were brought by the imperial army to test the enemies’ firing positions, fill trenches, and carry explosives to destroy armored vehicles.
The disgusting part, though, was that these things carried a virus. Once they reached the enemy rear, they could release a highly infectious disease, so not a single one could be allowed to pass through.
Chen Bitong looked out of the gap and said, “They’re coming up again, Captain Chen.”
Chen Chuan took a few steps forward and looked over as well. The White Plagues were rushing through the fog from all directions on the mountain. They were nimble, and their limbs were full of strength. As they moved up the mountain path, they didn’t make a single sound.
Chen Chuan took a quick glance and imdiately noticed more than ten of them had bulging stomachs. The sacs were normally empty, but the imperial army stuffed explosives inside them.
The explosives could be used to destroy armored vehicles, so their damage was no joke. The White Plagues had to be dealt with from a distance. Chen Chuan reached into his pocket and grabbed so stones.
Before he could do anything, Chen Bitong threw the spear in his hands. In an instant, it traveled more than a hundred ters and pinned one of the White Plagues to the ground. Then, he threw several more spears, and all the White Plagues carrying explosives were pinned down.
Chen Chuan put back the stones and went to the edge of the gap. So of the creatures had already reached the gap and jumped through it, so Chen Chuan spun on his feet.
A curved flash cut through the air, and several White Plagues were cut in half in midair. Rotting blood spilled out and started corroding the ground.
But the modified creatures showed no signs of fear and just continued charging over.
The White Plagues were swift and agile. There were also a lot of them, so if the defenders let down their guard even a tiny bit, they could tear past them, but the White Plagues’ speed was not enough to pose a threat to Chen Chuan. As he swung his saber, he could cut down a large troop. In just the span of a few breaths, he killed all the White Plagues that charged out of the gap.
But these things were considered consumables, so the imperial army didn’t seem to have any intention to use them sparingly. Hence, another wave rushed over, and so of them had explosives with them.
Chen Chuan didn’t have to worry about them. Chen Bitong threw his spears to get rid of them.
Even though taking them down with ntal energy would be easier and would take away the creatures’ chance to rush over, it was more trouble than it was worth. ntal energy took so ti to recover, and they needed to save it for subsequent attacks.
Their draining stamina was secondary. They had no problem fighting intense battles for days, and the Fu-Mu Entity’s propagation wasn’t going to last that long. Before long, the rear was going to send reinforcents and set up defensive positions in front of the gap.
They just needed to block the enemy’s offense until the rear was ready.
Ten minutes later, after more than ten waves of attacks, the imperial army finally stopped sending the White Plagues.
The mountain path and gap were filled with a pungent scent of blood, along with sothing foul-slling. The insects and small creatures in the area were all gone.
Chen Bitong’s expression remained stern and wary. “Captain Chen, they should have been testing our strength. In a mont, they’ll be sending powerful warriors up. Get ready.”
“That’s just what I want,” Chen Chuan stated.
He was never scared of fighting. To him, all the enemies he t were resources for his mind to grow.
Earlier, during his fight against Chen Bitong, his mind had beco much stronger. All the improvent he got before couldn’t compare to the growth he got from that fight, so he looked forward to the opponents he was going to face later. He hoped that these people could help him reach even greater heights.

A general wearing beautiful armor and feathers in his helt was sitting on a horse in the military base. His aide-de-camp was staring at the top of the mountain and occasionally spoke to him.
Beside him were more than ten royally appointed warriors and more than a hundred elite soldiers. Aside from these, he also had eight military advisors. His flag bearer sat proudly on a horse by the side, and in his hand was a ceremonial flag fluttering in the wind.
They were currently discussing how to claim the gap.
If it weren’t for the fact that this high point was perfect for opening a gap, they wouldn’t have picked this place, because it invited trouble.
Just as they expected, they ran into problems.
But since they were certain that this gap led to the heart of Central City, they couldn’t give up on it.
While they couldn’t see the specifics beyond the gap due to the fog, based on the previous assaults and the White Plagues’ multiple tests, they were certain that there were only two enemies worthy of their attention.
Jibei Road’s Central City was currently in an ergency situation, news of which was coming all the ti. It seed that Central City had sent two people, who were close to becoming martial arts masters, to guard the place, which was the best they could do. For so ti, these two martial arts masters shouldn’t be able to receive more reinforcents.
In other words, as long as they got rid of these two, the gate leading to Central City would be theirs.
The line breakers and royally appointed warriors hadn’t been successful in their offense, which showed how strong the enemies were, so the aide-de-camp decided to lead a battalion and claim the gap.
After much deliberation, the aide-de-camp rode out. With a swing of his arm, three of his retainers rode past him and rushed up the mountain.

A few minutes later, Chen Chuan noticed movent and looked outside the gap. Through the fog, he could see two people on the mountain path.
They didn’t wear any armor. Instead, they wore the traditional clothes of the old era. The bottom layer was black under-robes, and on top of them were cross-collared coats with fitted sleeves. One of them had a red ribbon in their hair, while the other had a jade-studded headband. They looked skilled.
The one on the left was a pretty woman with two long sabers that had tassels attached to them. The one on the right was a man in his thirties with a silver-plated spear.
Chen Chuan could sense that there was a third person hidden in the dark.
Chen Bitong ca over to take a look. “That’s the getup of a general’s retainer. These people are usually the descendants of treasonous officials. They receive harsh and brutal training from a young age and can only be absolved of their cris through achievents. If they get a major achievent, their entire family might be pardoned, so they’re really determined. Their presence ans that we have at least one aide-de-camp among our enemies.
“Even though they’re the lowest ranking commanders, they’re martial artists who can influence their environnt with their minds. Be careful. When they attack, they won’t have any reservations, unlike .”
Chen Chuan thought of sothing and said, “Instructor Chen, I rember that most of the royal family’s territory is inside the rged space. If the pure essence has been seized by the ones controlling the World Ring, how do they have martial arts masters?”
“They have ties with the existences from the other world and worship sothing. Not only can they get pure essence from them, but they can also bypass this limit through so kind of ritual or thod.
“Based on what I know, so companies are supporting the royal family in the shadows, so they get what they need through them as well. So countries also communicate with them to train up their martial arts masters. As paynt, they provide technology and resources to the royal family.
“These people are behind the royal family’s continued existence. The usurped royalty are still surviving in the rged space because these people need them.”
Chen Chuan understood what was going on right as he heard the pounding of hooves in the fog at the bottom of the mountain. Judging by the sounds, the horse was moving up the mountain path like it was running on flat ground. It felt like the rider had beco one with the horse, and the horse was picking up speed, which gave it an intimidating air. Even though it was coming up the mountain, it felt like no one could possibly stop it.
“They’re coming,” Chen Bitong said sternly.
Before the rider appeared, the two retainers put on fearso expressions and barged through the gap one after another.
The first to co out was the pretty woman. Her sabers left their sheaths with a whistle. After stepping through the gap, she saw Chen Bitong and Chen Chuan. With a spin of her sabers, she attacked Chen Chuan.
He watched the sabers and tightened his grip on the Frost King Saber’s hilt, but remained still. When the sabers were about to hit him, he looked up, and a chilling light cut through the woman horizontally. Both she and her saber were cut in two.
The spear-wielding man rushed out after her. He ignored his comrade’s death and thrust forward with his spear at Chen Chuan, who had swung his saber.
Chen Chuan turned to the side before stepping forward. He pulled his saber back to send it straight for the man’s neck. Just then, a rapier shot out of a shadow and went for Chen Chuan’s eyes.
