"You know, despite how dire our situation is, I feel weirdly calm, for so reason. Can’t really explain it, I don’t really get it myself, I just feel totally calm, almost eerily so," Mused Aria, as she flopped onto the bed.
"I think I know how you feel, at least a little bit. If nothing else, I figured I’d be more anxious than I am right now," I replied, as I laid down beside her.
We’d just gotten back ho, it was currently around 11 PM. We aren’t going to be able to sleep the way we usually do, going to bed late and then waking up late.
And as things start ramping up, we’ll likely have less and less ti to rest. We just don’t have the luxury of taking it easy.
"Hey...do you think we can really win this? I an, the odds are stacked pretty heavily against us. Actually, I’d say that’s a bit of an understatent, all things considered," Aria sighed wistfully.
"Mhm, no argunt here. I an, it definitely won’t be easy, but I wouldn’t say it’s impossible. If nothing else, at the very least, it’s far from completely hopeless," I replied with a wry smile.
"Yeah, I suppose so. If only we’d managed to kill those Sentinels sooner, before they killed enough people to weaken the boundary between our worlds to this degree, it wouldn’t have co to this in the first place."
"Maybe, but the Demon Lord probably would’ve just sent more Sentinels and Calamity Level Monsters to finish the job. Regardless, there’s no point in dwelling on it, it’s too late for that now. We’ll just have to deal with the threat ahead of us as best we can and hope we survive."
"Well, that’s pretty bleak. Let’s talk about sothing else, we can worry about all this tomorrow...tell a joke or sothing," She grinned, as she poked my cheek.
"Huh? It’s tough to just co up with sothing on the spot, you know. Let think, uh...okay, knock knock."
"Who’s there?"
"Deez."
"Deez who?"
"Deez Nuts. Well, that was stupid," I chuckled sheepishly.
"Uh...I don’t get it," She responded in confusion.
Huh?
"Wait, you an-...for real? It’s like a super old , it was pretty old even back in my previous life, so I guess it makes sense that you wouldn’t know about it. It’s a pretty stupid joke, it was a clip of a guy prank calling soone and going Deez Nuts, and then laughing. That’s all there was to it...but it was still referenced pretty often even around the ti I was alive," I inford her.
"So...it’s basically brain rot content?" She surmised in bemusent.
"I guess that’s not inaccurate. It’s sorta in the sa category as, like, Updog."
"What’s Updog?"
Woah, holy shit, she actually said it...
"Nothing much, what’s up with you?" I responded, stifling a smile.
"What-...ohh, I get it. Okay, that one’s pretty funny," She laughed in amusent, before adding, "Are there more?"
"Yeah, a few, though I’d say Updog is the best one. This one’s not nearly as well-known, Mind Goblin."
"Mind Goblin, huh? Okay, wait, I wanna try to figure it out myself. Mind...Goblin...Mind Goblin...oh, is it supposed to be a play on mind gobbling?" She surmised after mulling it over.
"Mhm, you got it, it’s usually followed up with Mind Goblin Deez Nuts, as in mind gobbling these nuts," I explained with a slight laugh.
This just be the dumbest conversation we’ve had...and considering the circumstances, I think we need it.
"Heh, yeah, that’s pretty stupid. Got any more?" She asked with a grin.
"Uh, let think...ohh, how could I forget about Ligma? That’s another classic...though, I always thought this one was a bit of a stretch. Think you can figure it out?"
"I can try...Ligma. Hm...Ligma, Ligma," She muttered with a puzzled look on her face, before adding with a shake of her head, "Yeah, I don’t get this one."
"It’s supposed to be ’lick my’. So, how people would use it was, they’d tell soone they’ve been diagnosed with Ligma, and when asked what Ligma is, they’d say Ligma Balls."
"Huh. Yeah, you were right, that is a stretch," She frowned in response.
"Uh-huh, I rember how I felt the first ti I heard, it wasn’t used on , but I saw it being used on soone else. And I just had this sense of exasperation, like, really? I just felt like it was trying too hard to be the next Updog...but it ended up sticking, and was referenced for quite a while," I recalled in bemusent.
Now that I think about it...things were pretty weird back then.
At this point, I’ve gotten pretty used to the stuff in this era. I don’t really think of it as futuristic anymore, considering that it’s been my present for nearly half a decade now.
There are still tis where I find myself in awe of the advanced technology of this era, but those monts are becoming increasingly rare lately.
"Maybe we should bring those old jokes back, if we win this war and survive," She suggested with a wry smile.
"Yeah, maybe. So dumb humor might be the order of the day in the aftermath," I nodded thoughtfully, before adding as she stifled a yawn, "Alright, we should probably get so sleep now. We’re going to have to wake up pretty early tomorrow...well, early by our standards, anyway. So, we should try to get as much sleep as we can."
"Sounds good, we don’t want to be sleep-deprived while taking on these brutal Calamity Level Dungeons," She nodded in agreent, before snuggling up to as I used my I-Watch to turn off the lights.
"Yeah, there aren’t a whole lot of factors we can control, so we should make full use of the ones that we can," I replied, before adding as I wrapped my arms around her, "Goodnight, Aria."
"Mhm, goodnight, Kai. See you in the morning. Love you."
"I love you too."
