Listening to Evelyn Morgan’s probing tone, a deep emotion flickered in Caden Lockwood’s dark eyes.
The fatigue and pain on his face weren’t hidden too deeply, and the brilliance that once shone in his eyes was gone, making one inevitably feel heartache.
"You should hurry and rest!" Evelyn said urgently, "I won’t disturb your sleep! Once you’re asleep, you won’t feel the pain! I’ll turn off the lights for you!"
Caden’s lips curled upward slightly as he held Evelyn’s hand that reached for the switch, placing it in his palm, tenderly protecting it.
She looked at him, knowing he didn’t want the lights off, so she simply used her other hand to gently press his temples.
His body temperature gradually turned cold, and yet he didn’t utter a sound of pain, though his tightly furrowed dark brows revealed his current suffering.
When one is weak, it seems the body’s warmth slowly fades away.
Panicking, Evelyn quickly turned off the air conditioning that was still on and wrapped Caden securely in the quilt, transferring her body heat to him.
Caden squinted at Evelyn, holding her tighter, inhaling the faint fragrance from her body, making the intense pain seem not so botherso.
Strangely, he suddenly found himself in the mood to chat with her.
"When I was very young, maybe three years old or two, long enough that I can’t rember," Caden’s voice was very soft, "my dad personally gave a bowl of dicinal soup to drink. After drinking it, my head started to hurt severely."
Upon hearing this, Evelyn trembled lightly.
Caden’s... father?
"When my mom rushed to the hospital for ergency treatnt, the doctors said I was gravely poisoned. If I hadn’t been taken to the hospital quickly and if a renowned doctor hadn’t been present, I would have died." Caden recounted in a storytelling tone.
He never expected that growing up, he would bring up this matter to soone else.
Moreover, he never imagined that when ntioning it, he seed like an observer, devoid of hatred or love.
He seed to accept this fact quite calmly and placidly.
"Since then, my headaches have intermittently occurred, continuing until now." Caden closed his eyes, "I’ve seen many doctors and consulted top specialists, but none could identify the cause. The doctors can only prescribe pain relief; whenever I have a headache, I take dication to ease the pain."
Evelyn’s face turned pale with fear, her scattered gaze failing to piece the information together.
The ssage Caden conveyed filled her with horror — his father poisoned him.
How could there be a father who intends to harm his son in this world?
"Over the years, I’ve gotten used to it." He smirked self-deprecatingly, "Luckily, these headaches don’t seem to be fatal; I’ve grown accustod to them. After all, over the years, I’ve developed so feelings for them."
"Uncle!" Evelyn spoke urgently, "Don’t say silly things! Every ti you’re in pain, it’s so unbearable; how can you have feelings for it? You will surely find an amazing doctor soon, and then they’ll be able to cure you, alleviating your pain!"
Caden couldn’t help but laugh, Evelyn’s naive concern truly lightened his mood!
He rubbed the pad of his finger on her palm softly, speaking gently, "Actually, my life has been much worse than yours, hasn’t it?"
Evelyn bit her lip, looking at Caden’s ashen handso face, the pulsating veins on his temples, his breathing shallow.
She thought Caden was really pitiful.
Though she lost her parents and brother at a young age, at least they all loved her.
"Uncle..." her voice was soft and gentle, "Why did your dad... treat you like that?"
