The Ice Belle had listened without interruption while Lucas laid out the design of what was to co. She had circled him in silence, her presence shifting with each layer of instruction, absorbing not only his words but the intent beneath them. When at last he finished, and the valley ahead stirred with distant preparation, she grew still.

"I understand," she said quietly.

Her voice carried the faint resonance of frozen glass touched by wind, delicate yet edged with certainty. There was no hesitation in it now. Whatever doubt or desire to prove herself had driven her into the forest days earlier had hardened into resolve.

Lucas inclined his head once in acknowledgnt. He did not praise her. He did not question her. Understanding was enough.

He signaled to Volde.

"Co."

The three of them moved ahead of the forward lines, slipping down from the ridge into the narrow corridors of the valley’s outer reach. They did not take the obvious descent. Lucas chose a broken path along jagged stone where loose shale masked sound. Volde followed with balanced precision, Thpp00e Ice Belle glided just above the ground, leaving no visible trace.

Below, the valley was deceptively calm. The enemy remained concealed further inward, waiting for Valerion’s commitnt. For now, only wind and shifting dust moved between the rock faces.

Lucas knelt beside a shallow depression near the narrowest choke point and withdrew one of the compact alchemical charges from his satchel. He pressed it into a fissure between stones, disguising it with gravel and careful pressure so that it appeared untouched.

Volde worked several paces away, planting similar devices in a staggered pattern designed not to explode outward in spectacle, but to create concussive shock and disorientation precisely where descending infantry would bunch together.

The Ice Belle watched, then extended her hand toward one of the fissures. A faint thread of frost slid into the crack alongside the device, invisible unless one stood inches away.

Lucas glanced at her.

"Anchor it lightly," he murmured.

She adjusted, the frost receding until it beca nothing more than a whisper of cold embedded in stone.

It would serve later to guide the spread of chill when she claid the valley fully.

They moved deeper, careful and deliberate. Every trap placed was calculated not rely for damage but for rhythm. The first would stagger. The second would disorient. The third would fracture formation entirely.

As they rounded a bend where the valley narrowed sharply between two leaning walls of rock, Volde stiffened almost imperceptibly.

Lucas saw it at once.

He held up a hand.

From beyond the bend ca the faint scrape of boot against stone.

Scouts.

Lucas gestured subtly. Volde shifted left, pressing into shadow. The Ice Belle dissolved upward into a thin shimr against the rock face, nearly indistinguishable from reflected light.

Two figures erged cautiously from the bend, lightly armored, moving with the careful patience of n who expected resistance but had not yet found it. Their insignia marked them as usurper outriders. They spoke in low tones, scanning the ground for disturbances.

They had not expected Valerion to move this far forward before full engagent.

Lucas waited until they were fully within the narrow stretch, where sound would not carry easily beyond the stone walls.

He moved first.

Not with flourish, but with speed refined by repetition. He closed the distance before the nearer scout could lift his voice. One gloved hand seized the man’s collar and pulled him off balance while the other drove a blade cleanly beneath the ribs. The strike was angled upward, precise, silencing breath before sound could form.

At the sa mont, Volde surged forward.

The Dominion bracelet pulsed faintly as he redirected his montum into a controlled burst. He crossed the remaining space in a single powerful stride and struck the second scout at the throat with the reinforced edge of his gauntlet. The impact crushed windpipe and sent the man backward into the rock face without a cry.

The Ice Belle descended as the second body slumped, her cold spreading instinctively across the fallen forms. A thin frost crept over exposed skin and cloth, sealing blood, stiffening fabric, preserving silence.

Within monts the two scouts lay motionless, already growing rigid in unnatural chill.

Lucas withdrew his blade and wiped it clean against the inside of the fallen man’s cloak.

"Drag them," he said quietly.

Volde moved without question, pulling the bodies into a crevice between rocks where shadow fell deepest. The Ice Belle extended her hand once more, and a pale crust of frost blended the bodies into stone, muting color and scent.

No obvious sign of struggle remained.

Lucas scanned the surrounding terrain carefully, listening for any echo of alarm. There was none. The valley beyond remained unaware.

He looked at Volde.

"They were early."

Volde nodded. "Testing movent."

Lucas considered that for a mont.

"Then they suspect more than we hoped," he said softly. "Good. Suspicion breeds haste."

He planted the final device near the bend, embedding it beneath loose gravel where the scouts had walked monts earlier.

When he rose, he turned toward the deeper valley where the usurper forces waited in concealnt.

"They will not find these two," he said. "They will assu they are ahead of the line."

The Ice Belle hovered beside him, her expression calm but sharpened now by the quiet kill.

Lucas began leading them back toward their forward position.

"Everything must unfold as though inevitable," he murmured. "No panic. No premature reaction."

Behind them, the hidden traps lay dormant. The frost threads waited within the cracks of stone. The valley held its breath.

Above, unseen along the heights, the usurpers prepared to spring what they still believed was their advantage.

They did not yet know the ground beneath them had already chosen another master.

They climbed back toward the forward ridge in silence, leaving behind no visible trace of what had been done. The valley remained outwardly unchanged, wind moving lazily through the narrow throat, sunlight touching stone as if nothing violent had ever brushed against it.

Lucas stopped when they reached a vantage point overlooking the central descent where the enemy would most likely reveal themselves.

Below, his divided force maintained its steady, unremarkable advance. Shields angled. Standards upright. Nothing rushed. Nothing abrupt. From a distance, it would look like resignation.

He did not look at the Ice Belle imdiately when he spoke.

"It is ti for you to begin," he said quietly.

She hovered beside him, her form faint against the pale sky.

"Do not freeze," he continued. "Do not frost. Do not alter what the eye can see."

Her gaze shifted to him, curious.

"I want the atmosphere," he said, gesturing slowly to the expanse of air filling the valley bowl. "Claim it. Thread yourself through it."

She listened, attentive.

"You will not change it yet," Lucas added. "You will only inhabit it."

The Ice Belle tilted her head slightly.

"You will spread thin," he explained. "So thin that no one senses your presence. Settle into the air the way breath settles into lungs. Let the valley grow accustod to you."

A faint shimr radiated from her, almost imperceptible.

"When they descend," he went on, "I do not want to wait for you to arrive. I want you already everywhere."

He crouched and pressed his palm lightly against the ground, feeling the subtle vibration of distant movent from the heights.

"The mont Volde fractures the ridge and the first concussive pulse erupts, you will not need to gather power. You will already be woven through the valley. All you will do is tighten."

The Ice Belle’s expression shifted, understanding dawning fully now.
