Steve
The bunker felt too small for everyone gathered. Full ensemble—The Party, Hopper, Joyce, Bob, Dr. Owens, Nancy, Jonathan, Robin, Eddie, Billy, Chrissy, El. Every person I'd recruited, trained, positioned over four years.
Tomorrow, we ended this. Or died trying.
"Listen up," I said. Silence fell imdiately. "Tomorrow at dawn, we assault the Mind Flayer's source gate. This ends the tunnel network, severs its connection to Will and the infected citizens, drives it back to the Upside Down permanently."
I activated Bob's tactical display. The source gate location glowed red beneath downtown Hawkins.
"Four teams. Specific roles. No deviations."
Hopper
Steve's planning was military-grade. Kid had absorbed more tactical knowledge than most soldiers.
"Assault Team," he announced. ", Hopper, Eleven, Billy. We enter tunnels, reach source gate, plant explosives, detonate. Primary objective: destroy the gate."
Made sense. Steve for combat, for backup, El for power, Billy for... redemption, apparently. Kid had proven himself tonight.
"Extraction Team. Nancy, Jonathan. You evacuate infected citizens from contaminated areas before detonation. Secondary objective: zero civilian casualties."
Nancy nodded. She'd been wanting more active role. This gave it.
"Overwatch Team. Bob, Dr. Owens. You coordinate from here via SuperComm. Monitor all teams, provide tactical guidance, adjust plans real-ti. Tertiary objective: keep everyone alive."
Bob straightened. Coordinator role. Safe but essential.
"Defense Team. The Party, Joyce, Dart. You protect Will at bunker. If Mind Flayer makes final push for him, you're last line. Quaternary objective: Will stays free."
The kids looked nervous but determined. Three years of training crystallizing into actual combat role.
Bob
Steve approached privately after team assignnts.
"Bob. This is critical. You're our eyes and ears. Everyone's survival depends on your coordination."
"I understand."
"No, I don't think you do." Steve's corrupted face held intensity I'd never seen. "You're the reason we win or lose. Your SuperComm network, your tactical analysis, your ability to process chaos into clarity. Without you, we're blind and dood."
"Steve—"
"You're not going into tunnels. You're not fighting monsters. You're doing sothing harder—keeping everyone else alive while they do those things." He grabbed my shoulders. "This is your role. The most important one. Do you understand?"
"Yes. I understand."
"Good." He handed the Map That Updates. "This shows real-ti changes. Tunnel collapses, demo-dog movents, dinsional fluctuations. Use it. Save us."
Nancy
Steve distributed equipnt thodically. Each item given with specific purpose.
"Nancy, the Compass That Points To Danger. It'll warn you if extraction sites beco compromised."
I took it. The needle spun wildly, then settled pointing at Steve himself.
"It's reading you as threat?" I asked.
"It's reading my corruption. I'm most dangerous thing in this room." He moved on. "Joyce, the dkit. Ergency healing for Will if needed. Instructions inside."
Joyce clutched it like lifeline. "Thank you."
"El, the Energy Detector. Use it to pinpoint exact gate location underground. We can't afford to miss."
Eleven examined the Geiger counter. "I will find it."
"I know you will."
Dustin
Steve kept Night Vision Goggles and Grappling Hook for himself. Combat equipnt, assault gear.
He looked at Dart. "You're with Defense Team. Protect Will, protect the kids. If demo-dogs attack bunker, you're first line of defense."
Dart clicked affirmation. My weird monster friend, team mber for real now.
"Everyone has role," Steve continued. "Everyone has purpose. We trained for this. We prepared for this. Tomorrow, we execute."
"What if sothing goes wrong?" Lucas asked.
"Then we adapt. That's what we do." Steve's corruption pulsed. "But stick to the plan. Trust your training. Trust each other. We've survived everything so far. Tomorrow's no different."
Except it was different. This was finale. Final battle. Do or die.
Steve
I gathered everyone for final briefing. Had to say it, even if it hurt.
"I might not survive this."
Silence. Heavy, crushing silence.
"The corruption might kill when the gate closes. Severing the Mind Flayer connection could destroy the bridge I've beco." I looked at each face. "But you all will survive. That's what matters. You're my family. Everything I've done, every sacrifice, every preparation, was for this mont."
"Steve—" Chrissy started.
"Let finish. Four years ago, I started preparing for this. Training you, positioning resources, building this team. And you've beco sothing incredible. Strong, capable, brave. You don't need to survive anymore. You just need to believe in yourselves."
Mike's voice cracked. "We need you."
"Maybe. But you'll survive without if necessary. That's what I've been preparing you for." I forced myself to continue. "If I don't co back, Hopper leads. Bob coordinates. Nancy investigates. The Party stays together. You keep fighting threats as they erge. And you rember that soone believed you were worth saving."
Tears flowed freely now. From The Party, from Joyce, from Chrissy.
"Tomorrow, we end this. Together. One last ti."
Chrissy
Everyone dispersed eventually. To sleep, to prepare, to process the possibility of Steve dying.
I stayed. Followed him to his room.
"You can't promise to co back," I said. Not question. Statent.
"No. I can't."
"But you're going anyway."
"Yeah. Because if I don't, Bob dies. Will gets reclaid. The Mind Flayer wins. That's not acceptable."
I grabbed his corrupted face, forced him to look at . "Promise sothing else then. Promise you'll fight to survive. That you won't just accept death because it's dramatic or noble or whatever."
"Chris—"
"Promise , Steve. Fight for yourself, not just everyone else. I need you. Not just as protector or leader. As you. The boy who prepared for apocalypse, who cares too much, who tries too hard. That person. Co back to ."
He pulled close. "I promise to try. That's all I can guarantee."
"Then try hard. Please."
We stayed like that—holding each other, knowing tomorrow might be goodbye, trying to morize the feeling.
Steve
Dawn approached too quickly. Team mbers sleeping fitfully throughout the bunker. Bob monitoring systems. Hopper checking weapons. Everyone preparing in their own way.
I stood in front of the tactical map. Source gate location marked, assault routes planned, contingencies established.
Four years of preparation. Cos down to this. One assault. One gate. One chance.
The Mind Flayer whispered: Tomorrow, traveler. Tomorrow we see if your preparations mattered. If your sacrifices were sufficient. If you truly changed fate—or just delayed inevitable.
"We'll see," I whispered back.
My reflection in the dark window showed stranger. Short hair, corruption covering most visible skin, Phase 3 muscle definition, eyes that went black without warning.
This was what saving everyone cost. Transformation. Corruption. Losing pieces of myself to keep them whole.
Worth it, I thought. Always worth it.
Chrissy found at 4 AM, couldn't sleep. We sat together, watching the clock count down to assault ti.
"I love you," she said quietly. "Whatever happens, I love you."
"I love you too. That's why I'm doing this."
"I know."
5 AM. Team mbers waking. Final preparations beginning.
6 AM. Equipnt distributed. Teams assembled. Assault plan reviewed one final ti.
6:30 AM. November 22, 1984. Dawn breaking over Hawkins.
Ti to end this.
Ti to prove four years of preparation actually mattered.
Ti to save everyone—or die trying.
"Let's go," I said. "We have a gate to destroy."
The team moved out. Bob stayed at the command center, coordinating. The Party positioned defensively around Will. Extraction teams deployed to civilian areas.
And Assault Team descended into the tunnels.
Into the darkness.
Into the final battle.
Please let be enough, I prayed to whatever might listen. Please let everyone survive.
The Mind Flayer's laughter echoed through corruption.
And the war began.
