Now reading: Chapter 69 70: The Final Assault - Part 2 (Descent) from Stranger Things : I m Steve Harrington, a Action novel by WhatIf4132.

Bob

The command center humd with activity. Screens showing tunnel maps, team positions, dinsional readings. SuperComm network alive with chatter.

"Assault Team, this is Overwatch. Radio check."

Steve's voice ca through clear: "Assault Team receiving. We're entering primary tunnel now."

"Confird. Reading four signatures. All clear for 200 ters, then junction. Go left, avoid collapsed section at 180 degrees."

"Copy."

I tracked their progress on the map. Four dots moving into hostile territory—Steve, Hopper, El, Billy. Everything I'd built, every system I'd designed, focused on keeping them alive.

This is my role. Eyes and ears. Coordinator. Protector from distance.

"Extraction Team, status?"

Nancy's voice: "Evacuating citizens from contaminated zones. No resistance yet."

"Defense Team?"

Dustin: "Bunker secure. Will stable. Dart on patrol. We're good."

All pieces moving. All teams positioned. The assault had begun.

Steve

The tunnel swallowed us. Organic walls pulsing, air thick with spores, darkness pressing close.

Phase 3 senses mapped everything—heat signatures ahead, structural weaknesses, demo-dog positions. I moved through the space like predator, leading the team deeper.

"Contact ahead," I warned. "Twelve demo-dogs. Defensive formation."

They erged from side passages. Coordinated attack, trying to stop us before we reached the gate.

El stepped forward. Telekinesis flared—three creatures slamd against walls, necks snapping. I engaged the rest with Phase 3 speed, bat and knife moving in perfect synchronization.

Hopper's shotgun roared. Billy swung a machete, all rage channeled into protective violence.

Twelve dead in under a minute.

"Clear," I confird. "Keep moving."

Billy

Fighting beside Steve was revelation. He moved like nothing human—blur of motion, perfect strikes, zero wasted energy. Phase 3 made him unstoppable.

And I was keeping up. Barely. But keeping up.

Neil would hate this. protecting people. Fighting for sothing other than anger.

A demo-dog lunged from shadows. I caught it mid-leap, machete through its throat. The creature died shrieking.

"Nice," Steve said. Simple praise, but it ant everything.

"Thanks for letting prove myself."

"You've been proving yourself for weeks. This is just confirmation."

We pushed deeper. Demo-dogs ca in waves—dozens, then hundreds. The tunnel was nightmare made flesh, every shadow potentially hostile, every sound potential attack.

But we advanced. Step by step, kill by kill, clearing path to the source.

Hopper

Bob's voice guided us through chaos: "Left tunnel collapsed. Take right alternative. Demo-dog concentration ahead—forty confird. El, you're primary. Steve, support. Billy and I will provide covering fire."

The kid was good. Maybe too good. His coordination was military-level, anticipating threats before they materialized.

"Hopper, movent behind you. Three o'clock."

I spun, fired. Demo-dog fell dead.

"Thanks, Bob."

"That's what I'm here for."

El stepped forward, nose already bleeding from previous exertion. "How many?"

"Forty," Bob confird. "Maybe more. Big concentration."

"I can handle it."

She couldn't. Not forty. But Steve moved beside her. "Together. On three. One, two—"

They attacked simultaneously. El's telekinesis throwing creatures, Steve's Phase 3 killing what got through. Perfect coordination, devastating efficiency.

By the ti Billy and I joined the fight, half were already dead.

El

My head scread with exertion. Too much power usage, too many kills, nosebleed becoming hemorrhage.

"El, ease off," Steve ordered. "You're pushing too hard."

"Have to clear path—"

"We'll clear it together. Conserve your strength for the gate. That's when we need you most."

He was right. The assault was marathon, not sprint. I had to pace myself.

Steve took point, Phase 3 abilities carrying the team forward. I provided support, strategic throws, buying breathing room.

Deeper we went. The tunnels changed—less structured, more organic. We were approaching the heart.

Steve

The corruption surged with each step. Deeper into the network, closer to the source gate, the Mind Flayer's presence intensified.

Black veins spread across my face, visible even through skin. My eyes went completely black temporarily, sight shifting to sothing else—hive vision, seeing through multiple perspectives simultaneously.

"Steve!" Hopper grabbed my arm. "Your eyes—"

"I'm fine." Vision returned to normal. Mostly. "It's the proximity. Mind Flayer is close. I can feel it."

"Can you continue?"

"Have to." The corruption pulsed like second heartbeat. "But it's useful. I can sense where the gate is. This way."

Bob's voice crackled through radio: "Steve, your biotrics are critical. Corruption readings off the scale."

"I know. Ignoring it. Keep guiding."

"Steve—"

"Bob. Trust . I need to use this. The corruption is compass pointing to our target."

Silence. Then: "Understood. Continue current heading. Source gate is 400 ters ahead."

We fought through more waves. Demo-dogs numbered in hundreds now, desperate defense of the hive's core.

Billy took claw to his shoulder. Hopper's leg got bit. El's exhaustion was visible. But we pressed forward.

So close. So close to ending this.

Bob

Watched their vital signs on the monitors. All critical. All pushing past safe limits.

But advancing. Actually advancing despite impossible odds.

"400 ters," I guided. "300. 200. Heavy concentration ahead—energy readings maxed. Demo-dogs everywhere. That's final push."

"Understood," Steve confird. His voice sounded wrong. Layered. Like two people speaking simultaneously.

The corruption was taking him. But he was using it, channeling it into tactical advantage.

Please survive this. Please all survive this.

Steve

We broke through into the cathedral chamber.

Massive organic space, walls pulsing like living tissue. And at the center—the source gate.

It wasn't like the lab's gate. This was wound in reality itself, red energy bleeding through dinsional barrier. The Mind Flayer's anchor point, its connection to our world.

Surrounded by demo-dogs. Hundreds of them. All protecting the gate.

"That's it," I said. Eyes completely black now, corruption overwhelming. "Destroy that, everything connected dies."

Including possibly .

Hopper stared at the army between us and the gate. "We can't fight through that."

"We have to."

Billy readied his machete. "Then let's fight."

El gathered her remaining power. "Together."

I activated Phase 3 to maximum. Corruption and power rging, making sothing between human and monster.

"Bob," I radioed. "If this goes bad, protect Will. Keep everyone safe. And tell Chrissy I tried."

"Steve—"

"Assault Team, charge!"

We ran toward the gate. Toward hundreds of demo-dogs. Toward the final battle.

Toward victory or death.

Please let it be victory, I prayed.

The Mind Flayer laughed through my corruption.

And hell began.
