rchant Kuo was a stout man with a shrewd gaze and a no-nonsense attitude that commanded respect among his peers.

"Han Yi," Kuo greeted him with a nod as they stepped aside from the bustle of the market square. "Your work was solid on this trip. You kept your head down, did what was needed, and didn’t cause any trouble. Here," the rchant said, pulling a small pouch from his belt and handing it over, "one hundred low-grade spirit stones. It’s a fair sum — better than so sect missions I’ve heard of."

Han Yu accepted the pouch with a faint smile, weighing it lightly in his palm. The spirit stones were bright blue and shimred faintly with internal energy. This paynt was more than satisfactory, a tangible reward for the risk and effort he had invested over the past months.

"Thank you, rchant Kuo. If I decide to join another caravan, I’ll be sure to co find you," Han Yu replied, bowing respectfully.

Kuo gave a gruff laugh. "You’re welco anyti. There’s always work for soone reliable like you."

With the formalities complete, Han Yu made his way through the crowded streets to find lodging. The inns near the market were lively but affordable, catering mostly to travelers like himself — rchants, guards, and wanderers seeking rest before the next leg of their journeys.

He settled into a modest room at a common inn: a single bed, a small wooden table, and a window overlooking a narrow street where lanterns began to glow in the growing dusk.

Sitting quietly, Han Yu unpacked his satchel and laid out the docunts and tokens he had gathered. The weight of his mission pressed on his mind as he reviewed what he’d learned during his ti with the caravan and in the outpost.

The months of cautious investigation, the secrets uncovered about the rising beast activity, the sect’s efforts to bolster defenses, and the hints of unrest simring beneath the surface—all of it painted a clearer picture than the vague rumors and guesses he’d started with.

He leaned back against the creaking chair, his eyes tracing the faded ceiling beams.

’I can end this mission now,’ he thought. ’I’ve gathered far more than enough information to satisfy anyone back at the sect. And I did it in only three months. The mission was supposed to last a year.’

The mory of the original briefing surfaced in his mind: monitor the area for a full year, track the movents of the Mist Eye Sect and any unusual activity near the caldera. But the pace of change and the influx of new intel ant he had more than enough to justify an early conclusion.

The prospect of staying longer didn’t appeal to him. The plateau was dangerous, and the sect’s reach here was tightening. The more ti he spent, the greater the risk of exposure. Even with his disguise and stolen tokens, one wrong move could ruin everything.

Besides, Han Yu knew his next steps.

The maps he had purchased in the market earlier that day now lay spread on the table before him. They showed the network of roads and trade routes stretching from the plateau far to the south and west—paths that would take him away from the Mist Eye’s direct influence.

’It’ll take at least three months to travel that way,’ he mused. ’But the terrain is easier, and I can avoid their main strongholds.’

His plan was clear: head further south to Wujin City, then turn westward along established trade routes, keeping his distance from any known sect strongholds while still following the trail of information he needed. The longer route would be slower but far safer.

As night deepened and the inn’s lanterns flickered softly, Han Yu allowed himself a mont of quiet relief. The mission was far from over—there were still mysteries to unravel and dangers ahead—but for the first ti in a long while, he felt a asure of control.

He was no longer a re pawn wandering blindly through a perilous land. He was a hunter now, tracking his prey with clear eyes and steady hands.

Tomorrow, he would prepare for the journey west. Tonight, he would rest and gather strength for whatever lay ahead.

The dawn light filtered softly through the wooden lattice window of Han Yu’s modest room, stirring him from sleep. He rose quietly, careful not to disturb the innkeeper sweeping outside the door. Today, he decided, would be spent exploring Wujin City, gathering whatever local knowledge he could find before setting out on the next leg of his journey.

Still using the na Han Yi, he dressed simply in plain traveling clothes, his glaive securely strapped to his back beneath a loose cloak. Even here in the relative safety of the city, he knew the importance of maintaining his disguise.

The Mist Eye Sect disciples were known to frequent the streets and marketplaces; any careless recognition could unravel months of careful planning.

Stepping out onto the bustling streets, Han Yu felt the vibrant pulse of the city wash over him. Unlike the small Caldera Edge town, Wujin City was a sprawling hub of comrce and culture, with stalls lining the roads, traders shouting their wares, and crowds of commoners and cultivators alike moving between districts. The city was clearly prosperous, its wealth reflected in the quality of goods and the steady stream of travelers passing through.

As Han Yu made his way cautiously through the throng, he overheard snippets of conversation. It wasn’t long before he picked up on the presence of the Mist Eye Sect here. Unlike the remote stronghold or the outpost near the caldera, the sect had a firm foothold in Wujin City itself.

He learned from a few well-placed questions and careful eavesdropping that the sect maintained a base in the western district—a fortified compound hidden behind high walls and guarded by seasoned disciples.

The western district was noticeably quieter and more orderly, with patrolling cultivators who carried the unmistakable tokens of the Mist Eye Sect.
