On the vast, snow-covered snowfield in the middle of the night, the ground was a dim gray, with very low visibility. The weather suddenly turned harsh, the cold wind howled, lifting snowflakes that danced wildly in the sky, chilling people to the bone. Snowballs stacked on lofty treetops fell with a patter as if it were hailing, splattering everywhere upon hitting the ground. It was extrely difficult to traverse in such harsh conditions, with the icy air seeping into one's body, making it even more unbearable, as if one's entire being was freezing. Luo Zheng shook his slightly numb head, occasionally glancing back over his shoulder.
Behind, the ground was covered with pure white snow, snowflakes danced in the air, hindering visibility. He couldn't see far, nor did he know if the enemy was following. However, the footprints on the ground were enough to reveal his trail. Even though they had been disguised with branches, a skilled person could still detect the traces. Luo Zheng couldn't help but look up at the sky, shivering uncontrollably, yet still hoping the wind would blow harder, sending snowflakes to block their path.
In front, Shadow, carrying Snow Fox, continued to forge ahead, and was showing signs of strain. Luo Zheng was worried, hurriedly jogging up to him, shouting, "Brother, let take over for a while."
"No need, we're almost there," Shadow replied loudly, quickening his pace.
"Howl—!" Suddenly, a wolf's howl ca from the swirling night, yet no wolf was visible. Luo Zheng was startled, quickly raising his gun to search. Wolves of the snow night usually didn't co out unless starved, and starved wolves were irrational and very difficult to deal with. Luo Zheng dared not be the least bit careless.
"Quick, just charge through," Shadow reminded loudly without concern.
"Huh?" Luo Zheng looked at Shadow in surprise but fearlessly followed, his gaze cold and watchful of the depths of the snow-laden night. As long as it wasn't a massive pack of Wild Wolves, Luo Zheng was not afraid.
Before long, a large gray wolf appeared, growling restlessly, its eyes glinting coldly. Not far behind it stood three more Wild Wolves, all robust, watching everyone coldly, their gaze fierce. Luo Zheng was shocked and was about to shoot when Shadow beside him yelled, "Don't move, just go through."
"Hungry wolves are hard to avoid," Luo Zheng shouted in warning.
"Howl—!" Shadow suddenly roared angrily, resembling a wolf's howl, his voice carrying boundless power, rolling like thunder, echoing through the wilderness. At this mont, the swirling snowflakes seed to freeze in the air.
Luo Zheng looked at Shadow in astonishnt, only to find that Shadow, face cold, continued running forward, his thick, dark eyebrows covered in snowflakes. The snow fox on his back was also covered in snow, making the two look like snow giants charging forward with a fierce aura, exuding a chilling sense of danger.
A bizarre phenonon occurred—the starving wolves, upon hearing Shadow's roar, started whimpering unwillingly but soon dispersed, clearing a path and quietly watching Luo Zheng and the others leave, without any intent to attack. Luo Zheng watched in shock at the scene, then looked at Shadow running ahead, shouting, "Brother, they also fear you?"
"Within a hundred kiloters, no Wild Wolf isn't afraid of . We've fought a few tis," Shadow replied loudly, with a strong sense of confidence.
"Impressive," Luo Zheng praised sincerely.
"Let's move quickly. These few hungry wolves are just the vanguard, more are following. Starving wolves on a snowy night are extrely fierce and shouldn't be provoked. With them as a rear guard, it's a great chance to shake off the enemy," Shadow loudly reminded.
"Makes sense, I'll take over for you for a bit," Luo Zheng agreed.
Shadow wasn't picky and, having exhausted much energy running, handed Snow Fox over to Luo Zheng to carry, taking Luo Zheng's equipnt to handle vigilance. They continued onward, and soon the sounds of gunfire and explosions faintly ca from behind. They couldn't help but pause and glance back, exchanging a look and a knowing smile, continuing their journey braving the wind and snow.
The heavy snow couldn't cover their tracks imdiately, but with the wolves as a barrier, even if the enemy defeats the wolves and gives chase again, their footprints would have enough ti to be covered by the heavy snow. Such a good escape opportunity shouldn't be missed. Gritting their steel teeth, they hastened their pace, marching quickly.
They traveled for about an hour, with Luo Zheng, looking at the flying night sky, not knowing where they were. However, Shadow seed familiar with the route, leading them as if on light wheels. Unknowingly, they reached a plain, and Shadow in front suddenly stopped, pointing at the ground.
Luo Zheng walked over to look, beneath his feet was dense shrubbery and a dark crevice, as if the earth had split open. The crevice was less than two ters wide and stretched into the darkness. Shadow said, "I saw you have a rope in your backpack, we need to lower him down first."
"Alright," Luo Zheng agreed, setting Snow Fox down.
Shadow pulled a rope from his backpack, tying one end around Snow Fox's waist and the other end around a nearby tree as thick as a bowl. Luo Zheng took out a flashlight, shining it into the crevice below, saying, "I'll slowly lower him down about twenty ters, you follow below and look after him. I'll get the rope up and then descend. There are many protrusions on the cliff, so one person can descend without the rope."
"Alright, be careful," Shadow replied, heading down with Snow Fox.
Luo Zheng slowly lowered the rope tied to Snow Fox. The special rope was incredibly strong and durable, impervious to abrasion. Shadow held the flashlight in his mouth, using both hands and feet to climb down, stabilizing Snow Fox as it descended slowly, preventing excessive swaying that would put pressure on Luo Zheng.
Above, Luo Zheng carefully let the rope down until it was all released, waiting a mont until he heard Shadow call below saying it was okay. He retrieved the rope, secured his backpack and weapon, and lowered them again. Soon after, Shadow inford him that all was well, so Luo Zheng gathered the rope, coiled it up, and began his own descent, with Shadow below illuminating the way. Soon, he and Shadow, waiting on the cliff with Snow Fox, reunited.
Snow Fox was secured on a protruding rock, with the backpack and weapons also hung on a rock. The stone and cliff ford a gap, perfect for suspending the backpack and weapons. Luo Zheng quickly tied the rope in a firm stone gap, pulling it downward forcefully. Satisfied, he looked at Shadow.
Shadow secured the other end around Snow Fox, and the two worked together to lower Snow Fox slowly. Reaching the end of the rope, Luo Zheng illuminated below with a flashlight while Shadow swiftly climbed down to join Snow Fox, stabilizing it and untying the rope.
Luo Zheng retrieved the rope, then sent down the backpack and weapons hanging in the rock gap. With Shadow securing them below, he untied himself, slung the rope across his back, once more holding the flashlight in his mouth, and slowly descended again to reunite with Shadow. There, they rested a while before continuing their eerie descent into the pitch-black crevice.
