A wolf howl disrupted Luo Zheng and Lan Xue's march, forcing them to stop and watch the surrounding forest cautiously. Luo Zheng quickly picked up his weapon, chambering a bullet, and said, "Encountering wolves at this ti isn't good. Hopefully, it's not a pack. With a wolf's sense of sll, it's likely they've detected us. It might be calling its mates. Let's climb a tree and see."
"Alright, it's almost daybreak anyway, let's take it as a break," Lan Xue said nonchalantly.
The two, skilled and fearless, didn't take the Wild Wolf seriously; they just didn't want unnecessary trouble. They quickly climbed a big tree, hiding in its crown, vigilantly watching the surrounding forest. But it was a grey haze everywhere, and they couldn't see anything, so they simply rested.
Soon, another wolf howl sounded, this ti nearby. Luo Zheng's eyes, slightly closed, suddenly snapped open with a burst of nacing intent. He quickly spotted another wolf on the ground not far away. This wolf was large but had a sunken belly, probably hadn't eaten for a long ti, a starving wolf.
Assessing the surroundings vigilantly, Luo Zheng found no other wolves approaching and beca puzzled, saying to Lan Xue on a nearby tree, "Only one wolf?"
"Seems like it, let's wait a bit longer," Lan Xue agreed.
"Alright, stay sharp," Luo Zheng replied.
Patiently, they waited. The wolf tilted its head toward the tree crown, clearly noticing them, but it neither attacked nor left, just stood still. Luo Zheng saw this and laughed in anger, "This beast is stalling with us. If it's dawn and no other wolves co, I'll go down and finish it. Could use it for breakfast."
"Wolf at is sour and tough, not tasty," Lan Xue laughed.
"Just make do, plus the bonfire can draw the enemy's attention," Luo Zheng joked.
Lan Xue didn't object, and they quietly waited. As daylight gradually crept in, the first rays of sunlight pierced through the dense haze and fell onto the snow-covered ground, Luo Zheng noticed no other Wild Wolves approached. He reckoned this lone wolf might have been living solo or had been expelled from its pack.
"You cover, I'll go down and take care of it," Luo Zheng said to Lan Xue, seeing her nod in agreent. Luo Zheng swiftly slid down the tree, drew his combat knife, and kept a close eye on the Wild Wolf. He didn't want to waste bullets on it. The Wild Wolf just stared at him with a fierce gleam in its eye. Luo Zheng decided to quickly remove his backpack, feeling much lighter, and said to the Wild Wolf, "Co on."
"Awoo--" The Wild Wolf, perhaps feeling provoked, roared and charged forward. Despite its sunken belly, its speed wasn't slow. Seeing it rushing, a sudden inspiration struck Luo Zheng, making him laugh as he shouted to Lan Xue, "Don't shoot."
Lan Xue was surprised to see Luo Zheng put away his combat knife as if preparing for hand-to-hand combat. She knew Luo Zheng wasn't bad at it, but still felt anxious, wanting to ask why. Yet, seeing Luo Zheng suddenly charge back like a bullet, she feared disrupting his fight and stifled her curiosity, preparing to shoot. Concerning Luo Zheng's safety, Lan Xue wouldn't dare not shoot.
At this mont, Luo Zheng charged at the Wild Wolf, which leapt high, exposing its massive maw. Its forelimbs were equipped with sharp claws, seeming like countless knives reflecting cold light in the air. Luo Zheng's speed abruptly increased as he twisted his body to avoid a head-on clash, positioning himself to the wolf's side, and delivering a huge punch to the wolf's head.
"Boom!" Luo Zheng's punch was swift as lightning, slamming into the Wild Wolf's head. Even though its head was hard as iron, its robust body was sent flying by Luo Zheng's punch, hitting the ground heavily. Luo Zheng knew the punch wasn't lethal, rely knocking the wolf unconscious. It would eventually wake up.
Wolves have nine lives; as long as they're hit, even with just a breath left, they won't die easily. Luo Zheng approached and checked, confirming the Wild Wolf wasn't dead, then laughed. At this mont, Lan Xue quickly slipped down from the tree crown, walked to Luo Zheng, and asked, "What was that all about? Killing it with a knife would've been much easier."
"No, I have to keep it alive," Luo Zheng chuckled.
"Oh, is there a plan?" Lan Xue keenly sensed Luo Zheng had ulterior motives, curiously probing.
"Of course, wolves have territorial awareness and won't wander far, plus pack consciousness. This wolf probably ca out to hunt solo, and will head back once it wakes up. If we attach the signal device to it and keep it active long-term, it will certainly be discovered, leading the enemy to track it. Seeing humans, the Wild Wolf will surely run, taking the enemy all over the place while we escape," Luo Zheng explained, revealing his intention.
Lan Xue's eyes lit up, laughing, "You crafty guy, always coming up with ideas. I think it could work. Wolves' territorial sense is strong and they likely won't stray westward, avoiding implicating our brothers. If Lan Xing remotely controls it to shut off, it'd work even better."
"Oh, why didn't I think of that?" Luo Zheng exclaid excitedly, continuing, "Once the enemy's drawn, Lan Xing remotely shuts off the signal device, and after a thorough search, turns it back on. As long as the wolf's location is advantageous to us, keep it on to lure the enemy back into pursuit, letting the Wild Wolf play hide-and-seek with them. What a good plan — why didn't I think of it sooner? If I had earlier, we wouldn't have needed to split up." He said, looking regretful.
"It's not too late now. We have two signal devices, should be enough," Lan Xue said, taking out her signal device, securing it tightly on the Wild Wolf with special ropes.
Luo Zheng activated his signal device, quickly connecting to Lan Xing via satellite, and shared his plan. Lan Xing was pleasantly surprised, laughing, "Brother-in-law, that's a clever idea. I'll adjust the signal device's format and frequency — it's a technical matter, ti-consuming to explain, but leave it to . It can be controlled remotely without affecting others' normal usage. Oh, Director Wu asked for your status."
"Tell them everything is alright. The retreat timing depends on enemy response," Luo Zheng said.
"The signal device on the wolf can be used in five minutes. Withdraw now, leave it to ," Lan Xing said.
"Retreat, or we'll be too late!" Knowing Lan Xing's character, Luo Zheng knew that despite her easygoing nature, she's ticulous at work. If she says no problem, it's surely okay, prompting Lan Xue to nod knowingly. The two swiftly evacuated, sliding quickly down the slope without stopping.
