The morning sun was gentle and warm, silently watching over the eternal snowy fields of the mountains, bringing a hint of warmth to the earth. A gentle breeze swept across the wild, cold enough to bite. Luo Zheng and Lan Xue slid swiftly towards the rising sun, rushing from one hill to another without daring to pause, hastily leaving the scene. Everyone was waiting for the east to make a noise to attract the enemy's attention, but they were not yet in the safe zone. To expose themselves recklessly was a dead end.
Already fatigued, they gritted their teeth and persisted. They had taken off their night vision devices and sped up the journey. The enemy's attention was still on the east, and Shadow was still lurking. They knew clearly that they must run as far as they could before the enemy's attention could be drawn over.
One hour passed, two hours passed, and before they knew it, it was noon. They arrived under a cliff and found a concealed spot to hide. Luo Zheng quickly opened the signal device, not even taking off his gear. Once connected, he urgently asked, "Report status."
"The enemy is still searching, Shadow is about to be exposed, and Director Wu and the others are getting anxious. What's your situation now?" Lan Xing urgently inquired.
"Pinpoint our location quickly. How's Wild Wolf doing?" Luo Zheng hurriedly said.
"Just a mont." Lan Xing promptly agreed.
Only then did Luo Zheng take off his backpack, observing the surrounding terrain. Soon, Lan Xing's voice ca through the earpiece: "Location successful. Wild Wolf is moving south, approximately a hundred kiloters away from you. Didn't expect you two to get this far in half a day. Shall we implent the plan?"
"Yes, proceed. Keep a tight rein on the specifics." Luo Zheng exclaid joyfully and quickly said.
"Understood." Lan Xing replied confidently.
After closing the signal device, Luo Zheng finally found a spot and sat down heavily. The morning had been a grueling rush, consuming a lot of energy. Lan Xue also sat down beside him and said softly, "As long as the signal device attached to Wild Wolf stays on for an extended period, the enemy will certainly find out quickly. Whether it can draw them away is uncertain."
"True, the enemy can discover through satellites or drones that it's Wild Wolf unless Wild Wolf hides in a cave before they arrive, shielding the signal from detection. But the chance of this coincidence is too slim, no use hoping. However, the enemy might think Wild Wolf consud one of our comrades, signal device and all. Either way, one thing is certain: the enemy will determine we're in the east based on the signal, thus sending a large force for a thorough search." Luo Zheng explained, panting and sowhat incoherent. He hurriedly opened his canteen for a drink, feeling a bit better afterwards, and passed the canteen to Lan Xue.
Lan Xue took a few sips, caught her breath, and said, "You're right, a signal source can't just appear in the east for no reason. The less people they see, the more the enemy pays attention. Anyway, we'll have to rely on luck now. We've done everything possible, we need to rest here for a bit."
"Sure, my bones feel like they're coming apart." Luo Zheng felt unbearable pain all over. Leaning against his military backpack, he closed his eyes. He didn't want to move at all, too exhausted. Things had gotten to this point and what happens next is beyond control, leaving it to fate.
Lan Xue was also too tired to move and said while leaning against the military backpack, "I just want to sleep soundly, keep sleeping like this, wake up when I'm fully rested. How nice would that be."
"Go ahead, I'll keep watch." Luo Zheng opened his eyes and said, silently practicing the family tradition breathing skill to regulate his breath.
Lan Xue already knew Luo Zheng could use the breathing skill to quickly alleviate fatigue and restore strength. Without argunt, she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep. Looking at the resting Lan Xue, Luo Zheng felt a pang of heartache and shifted his gaze away, watching the surrounding canyon. The canyon wasn't deep or long, but enough for them to hide.
About an hour later, Luo Zheng felt less physical pain and sowhat restored in strength, yet he still didn't want to move. Suddenly, he heard the whir of an approaching aircraft, sounding like a reconnaissance plane. Luo Zheng remained still, seeing Lan Xue awaken. He comforted her, saying, "Sleep, no matter what it is."
"Makes sense, even if enemies parachute right in front of us, there's nothing we could do. Better to seize the ti to rest, I'll sleep a bit more." Lan Xue said, sitting up and snuggling into Luo Zheng's arms, clinging tightly, resting her head on his chest, and falling back to sleep, feeling completely at ease.
Luo Zheng was equally drowsy, fortunately managing with the family breathing skill, gradually recovering energy, and the sleepiness slowly dissipating. He continued keeping watch, his weapon right beside him, bullet chambered. Should any danger arise, Luo Zheng could instantly grab the weapon and engage in combat.
Thankfully, until twilight, no danger unfolded. This outco delighted Luo Zheng. Lan Xue woke up to stand watch, letting Luo Zheng sleep. When Luo Zheng awoke, it was around 10 PM. He squinted at the pitch-black night sky and slowly regained clarity.
"Awake?" Next to him, Lan Xue's caring voice asked, "How are you feeling?"
"Alright, I'm fine." Luo Zheng casually replied as he sensed his situation. His strength returned considerably, and he slowly rose, stretching a bit, and glanced at his watch. He said, "Rest another five minutes, we'll continue. You okay with that?"
"Going slow is fine." Lan Xue said.
"Alright, I'll contact the external forces." Luo Zheng agreed, turning on the signal device. Connecting to the satellite quickly, he asked, "Pinpoint my location, what's the current situation?"
"Yes." A man's voice responded solemnly, "The enemy has withdrawn from the west. Director Wu led the team westward, currently no imminent threat. Position pinpointed, closest enemy roughly fifty kiloters away, conducting a search. Awaiting instructions."
Luo Zheng realized his interlocutor was the Information Officer from the first squad, estimating Lan Xing was being rotated for rest, and said imdiately, "Any enemies to the east of my position?"
"No enemy contacts detected. Likewise, none to the south at this ti. Enemies are located to your west, closest approximately fifty kiloters away. You may opt to head south or east. Southbound lies a heavily fortified border three hundred kiloters away. Eastbound, after three hundred kiloters, no enemy blockade and will then turn south, it should allow for a safe return. Awaiting instructions." The counterpart hastily responded.
Luo Zheng considered and said, "We'll continue east. Have the support team head south of us to et up, confuse the enemy, and cover our retreat. What's Director Wu's status?"
"They're retreating, currently unable to contact them." Promptly the other replied.
"How's Wild Wolf?" Luo Zheng pursued further inquiries.
