Luo Zheng lay on top of Lan Xue, feeling the elasticity of her soft body and her breath as sweet as orchids. The unique fragrance of a woman seeped into his heart and spleen, causing his mind to wander. Suddenly, a faint sound by his ear seed like sothing had pierced through the door. Although barely audible amidst the dayti noise, it was startlingly clear in the quiet of night.
"Sniper?" Lan Xue asked in surprised whispers as she hugged Luo Zheng and rolled to the side. They reached the edge of the bed, where she ended up on top of Luo Zheng. Noticing his unnatural expression and rapid breathing, she felt sothing hard beneath her and her face flushed with embarrassnt. She glanced at him with a mixture of irritation and coyness, whispering sharply, "At a ti of life and death, you're still having wild thoughts."
The complaining tone and the charming roll of her eyes left Luo Zheng bewitched. Lan Xue felt comfortable lying on top of him, but still shyly crawled quickly to the window. She peeked out quietly and took out her phone to dial a number. Once connected, she spoke, "Mountain Eagle, Ghost Hand, there's a sniper directly in front of the second bedroom window. Position unknown, be careful." She then hung up.
Coming back to his senses, Luo Zheng gave an apologetic smile and asked, "Are they two nearby?"
"Yes, I had them lurking in the darkness of the neighborhood while we are exposed in the light to back each other up," Lan Xue said quietly, glancing at the bullet hole in the door then asked in a soft voice, "How did you detect the sniper?"
"I had a nightmare, dread that the room was full of gas and then exploded. After waking up, I told Snow Leopard. He went to the kitchen to check and found the gas line by the window had indeed been tampered with. While opening the window, he was shot at by a silent sniper, and he ca back to inform . As I was opening the door, I saw sothing reflecting light but wasn't sure if it was the sniper. Turns out my guess was right," Luo Zheng explained with lingering fear.
"So that's what happened," Lan Xue mused, amazed that Luo Zheng could sense danger in his dreams, and then suggested, "You go to the master bedroom and protect Elder Lin."
"Got it," Luo Zheng replied as he crawled out of the second bedroom, pushed open the door to the master bedroom, and saw Elder Lin sleeping soundly on the bed. He quickly crawled to the window, drew the curtains, and breathed a sigh of relief. He leaned into the corner, drawing his service pistol, chambering a round, and noting Elder Lin waking up startled and trying to get up—his light sleep easily disturbed by the commotion.
"Elder Lin, it's . Don't move and don't worry," Luo Zheng quickly reassured him. Seeing Elder Lin's puzzled expression slowly relax back onto the bed, he continued, "We've heard gunfire surveilling this place. We can't be careless, our people are already on it. I'll stay here to protect you. Don't be scared, I'm here."
"I'm an old man, if I die, I die. There's nothing to be afraid of. But these people, they're too audacious, aren't they? Who are they? Any leads?" Elder Lin asked angrily.
"Not at the mont," Luo Zheng didn't tell the whole truth, watching his surroundings vigilantly, his eyes like sharp swords emitting a piercing light. His ears pricked up, listening for any sound around him. He was on high alert, and after a while, he peeked out of a corner of the curtain. Outside was the garden with so low shrubs; beyond lay a row of rooms, dark and indistinct, with no suspicious signs to be seen.
Elder Lin, noticing Luo Zheng's professionalism and solemnity, felt an inexplicable sense of security and went back to resting. The room was silent, no one spoke, and no lights were turned on—it was as if nothing had happened. Half an hour later, Snow Leopard crawled over and threw a headset at Luo Zheng, signaling him to put it on.
Once Luo Zheng put on the headset, he heard Mountain Eagle saying from within, "Target spotted. Ghost Hand is in pursuit. I will continue to stand by. Any other suspicious targets to check out? What's the next step? Please instruct."
"Stay concealed, stand by," Lan Xue whispered.
Everyone patiently waited in the room, and after an hour, the voice of Ghost Hand ca through the earpiece, informing them that the target had soone pick him up by car and had escaped. Lan Xue then instructed Ghost Hand to also stay concealed and on standby, and the waiting continued.
As ti ticked by, second by second, it beca bright outside without anyone realizing. Without letting their guard down, Lan Xue spoke through the earpiece, "Ghost Hand, Mountain Eagle, start the cars and be on standby under the building. Also, notify the taxi driver to be on standby in the residential area."
"Understood." Everyone responded and Luo Zheng dialed the taxi driver's number, asking the driver to hurry to the residential area. After hanging up, Luo Zheng saw several old n's hats hanging on the wall of the room. He took down three of them, signaling to Elder Lin that it was okay to freshen up now.
Half an hour later, the taxi driver called back saying he had arrived at the residential area. Everyone carefully descended the building to find two cars parked at the entrance. Luo Zheng glanced at the taxi driver parked not far away and gestured for him to co over. Seeing Luo Zheng, the taxi driver imdiately drove his car over.
Lan Xue took two of the hats from Luo Zheng's hands and distributed one each to Ghost Hand and Mountain Eagle. After making several tactical hand signals, everyone nodded in understanding, leaving Elder Lin completely baffled. Just as he was about to ask, Luo Zheng said in a low voice, "You and I will be in the sa car. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, get in the taxi."
"It's fine," Elder Lin replied, knowing the stakes. He didn't refuse and got into the backseat of the taxi. Seeing that Snow Leopard and Ghost Hand were in one car, and Mountain Eagle and Lan Xue in another, all sitting in the driver and passenger seats with the backseats empty and the passenger-seat occupants wearing hats, Luo Zheng put on the last hat, got into the passenger seat, and whispered to Elder Lin, "Please lie down on the seat."
"That's fine." Elder Lin complied, laying down without protest.
Luo Zheng saw Lan Xue make several tactical hand signals indicating that he should leave first, and understanding the ssage, he said to the taxi driver, "Please, to the Military Research Institute. Take the main roads. Even if it's a bit further, I don't mind, but we need to be safe. Preferably, there should be no cover for snipers on either side of the road."
"Got it." The taxi driver was a forr soldier, naturally understanding the aning behind the words. He agreed heartily, glanced at Luo Zheng wearing a hat, and then at the hat-wearing occupants on the passenger seat of the other two cars. Realizing the high level of deception, he smiled knowingly and imdiately started the car and sped off.
As they left the residential area, Luo Zheng noticed that the other two cars didn't follow but took the normal route instead. A flash of worry crossed his mind, but he quickly regained his composure and motioned the taxi driver to speed up. After about ten minutes, they were close to their destination, when Luo Zheng's earpiece crackled with a ssage; Lan Xue's car had been attacked.
Luo Zheng was imdiately furious. These people had crossed them once, twice, now a third ti – it was too brazen. He urged the taxi driver to go faster, his heart tightening with concern. Considering Elder Lin's safety, he had to quell the anxious feeling rising inside him, drew his service pistol, and cautiously watched the surroundings.
