On the way back to the Embassy, Ghost Hand drove with focused attention, keeping the speed within the legal limit to avoid unnecessary trouble from overtaking. Luo Zheng sat quietly in the passenger seat, vigilantly observing their surroundings while pondering the just-concluded rescue operation. It had been a success to extract Ye Laixiang, and one thing he had to admit was that luck played a part.
Although the drain was a flaw in the underground prison, the inmates inside knew that even if they were aware of it, they couldn't escape. Where the drain t the ventilation shaft, steel bars were welded firmly in place, impossible to break open by human force. Even if prisoners made it to this spot, there was no way out for them. Stepping back, even if they managed to force open the steel grating and enter the drain, they still couldn't get out. The drain was too long, and the air inside was incredibly poor; the suffocating atmosphere would either smother them or the stench would be lethal. Essentially, knowing about this flaw in the drain was useless to the prisoners.
The underground prison was closely guarded, and infiltration from above ground was nearly impossible. This singular flaw of the drain was of no use to the prisoners, but Luo Zheng could take full advantage of it, provided that he discovered it. Who could have thought the only exit of a drain was ten kiloters away? Fortunately, luck was on his side; otherwise, it would have been impossible to rescue Ye Laixiang without a hitch.
Realizing this, Luo Zheng couldn't help but feel a wave of relief. Suddenly, he heard the sound of explosions and involuntarily turned his head to look. In the direction of Fushan, flas shot into the sky, tearing through the night, exuding a terrifying, oppressive atmosphere. Luo Zheng's expression beca solemn, and he glanced at Lan Xue, whose face also turned icy cold.
The sound of the explosion was enough to suggest that things hadn't gone smoothly. Perhaps the others hadn't withdrawn yet. Everyone remained silent, none wanting to articulate the concern. Ghost Hand glanced at Luo Zheng but didn't ask anything further, maintaining the speed. Luo Zheng was worried that Shadow and the others might be entangled with ninjas. The imperial guards were Japan's elite forces; who knew if there were ninjas among them? If so, Shadow and the others could be in serious trouble.
At that mont, the car approached the entrance of the village. Suddenly, Luo Zheng yelled, "Stop the car."
With a screech, the vehicle ca to an abrupt halt. Everyone looked at Luo Zheng in surprise. Lan Xue had a hunch about Luo Zheng's intentions. Her expression turned even colder, but she didn't try to stop him. So things had to be done, and soone had to do them. Luo Zheng looked at everyone and said, "You go back to the Embassy. I'll go check."
"Be careful," everyone said almost in unison.
Luo Zheng nodded, turned around, and ran towards the village entrance, dashing through the village towards the woods behind it. Those woods led to the back hills of Fushan. As soon as he entered the woods, Luo Zheng sensed soone approaching. Surprised, he quickly hid behind a bush, observing cautiously.
Soon, Luo Zheng saw two people supporting each other as they ran. The figures looked familiar. Startled, Luo Zheng waited for them to co closer. He recognized them as Mountain Eagle and Snow Leopard. Luo Zheng was shocked and hurriedly went to et them, shouting, "It's , what happened to you guys?"
"Ghost?" Mountain Eagle and Snow Leopard were about to raise their guns, sensing soone approaching. Hearing the shout, they lowered their weapons and ran towards him. Mountain Eagle asked in surprise, "What are you doing here?"
Luo Zheng looked at the two of them. Snow Leopard had a bullet graze on his leg, and Mountain Eagle had shrapnel cuts from an explosive arrow. Though not fatal, the injuries were troubleso. His expression darkened, and he quickly asked, "Where's Shadow?"
"He drew the enemy's pursuit away so we could withdraw first," Mountain Eagle said seriously, his face filled with admiration.
"That guy is truly formidable, I'm convinced, so we'll retreat first, to avoid holding him back. With his abilities, he'll definitely escape without a problem," Snow Leopard sincerely remarked.
Luo Zheng could tell that both of them held Shadow in high esteem; otherwise, with their pride, they would never opt to retreat first. Hearing the distant, intense gunfire, Luo Zheng's expression darkened, a flicker of worry flashed through his sharp gaze. "It's hard for even a tiger to stand against a pack of wolves," he said urgently, "The people have been rescued; you guys should also retreat back to the Embassy quickly. I'm going to check it out."
"Be careful," Ghost Hand warned.
"Let's go, you guys be careful too," Luo Zheng reminded them, and he sprinted towards the direction of the gunfire, gripping his pistol tightly in his hand. As he ran, Luo Zheng chambered a round into his gun, ticulously scanning his surroundings for any ambush; on the battlefield, any carelessness or oversight could cost one's life.
A few minutes later, Luo Zheng arrived at a road and continued running along it. It wasn't long before he saw flas reaching the sky in the distance, creating a scene as if an entire camp was ablaze; the red glow coupled with thick smoke was startling. It seed like Shadow had set the enemy's military zone on fire. Ahead, there was a checkpoint in disarray with bodies lying on sandbags, guns strewn about, and the guardhouse blown to smithereens, a sight of devastation from a stealth attack. Luo Zheng calmly surveyed his surroundings, saw no one, and cautiously surged forward. He put away his pistol, picked up an automatic rifle, and collected several magazines from the bodies.
After sprinting a few steps down the road, Luo Zheng could hear explosions coming from the distant mountains. Clearly, soone was in pursuit of sothing. He imdiately thought of Shadow. The direction of the chase was quite a distance from the military base, so Luo Zheng abandoned the idea of rushing into the military base to investigate and quickly headed towards the explosions.
In the dim moonlight, Luo Zheng could only vaguely see the road ahead. The forest beca thicker and the path more difficult to navigate. As the explosions grew further away, he beca anxious and quickened his pace. Under the moonlit night, he ran through the trees, resembling an irritable wild wolf, darting left and right.
Gradually, Luo Zheng felt he was getting closer to the sound of gunfire and was instantly invigorated. Soon, he discovered occasional corpses on the ground, each killed with a single shot to the forehead. Even while running in the moonlit night, Shadow's gun skills were so precise that Luo Zheng admitted to himself he couldn't achieve the sa. He was filled with admiration; it was no wonder that Shadow was the most likely to beco the Strongest Soldier King in the base, and it explained why Mountain Eagle and Snow Leopard confidently left the battlefield, to avoid being a hindrance.
However, why hadn't Shadow shaken off his pursuers? Luo Zheng grew suspicious. A thought struck him; he dragged an enemy's body into so bushes, swiftly stripped off the enemy's gear and clothes and changed into them himself, donned a bulletproof helt, put on military boots, and quickly rushed forward, now disguised as the enemy.
The assault rifle he had collected was equipped with a flashlight. Before he changed his clothes, Luo Zheng didn't dare to use the flashlight to avoid raising suspicion, but now, disguised as the enemy, he needed to look the part. Turning on the flashlight and pursuing openly, he was less likely to attract attention. With the help of the flashlight and wearing military boots, he was able to move much faster.
Military boots are unlike ordinary shoes; there's no need to worry about the twigs and sharp sticks on the ground that would pierce ordinary footwear, causing injury. But the soles of military boots have a blast protective steel plate, which breaks any sharp object protruding from the ground with a single step, allowing one to move without concern.
After running a distance, Luo Zheng could see the pursuers ahead using flashlights, charging forward at a rapid pace and occasionally firing shots. He couldn't see Shadow's position ahead and, with a grim expression, he sped up. Suddenly, while running, he spotted a military saber on a corpse, felt a surge of joy, and quickly crouched to pick it up before continuing his pursuit. His gaze was determined and sharp, and his cold killing aura surged heavenwards.
