By the banks of a small river in a tropical rainforest, the water babbled gently, flowing leisurely eastward. Nearby, alard birds scattered in flight, fluttering into the distance, while a terrifying barrage of bullets whizzed back and forth across both banks. One misstep could an annihilation. Luo Zheng, crouched low under a mound of earth, heard that Zhou Gang was coming to reinforce and, while puzzled, rushed over excitedly, bending low and continuously dodging bullets that might be shot his way.
But there were too many enemies, and the dense gunfire made it difficult to move an inch. Luo Zheng had no choice but to take cover behind a large tree, stealthily positioned, and started to return fire. He realized the enemy was too nurous to count, all hidden across the river among the trees and firing wildly, clearly in no hurry to charge. They were likely waiting for reinforcents.
Luo Zheng thought this situation was unfavorable for him, so after firing the machine gun, he quickly swung the barrel around, bent low, and dashed forward, his steps skillful and elusive. He dodged the incoming bullets and soon reached a hillside up ahead. Having just taken cover, a man in a camouflage suit appeared—it was the familiar Zhou Gang.
"Quick, we need to withdraw imdiately," Luo Zheng cried out urgently.
Zhou Gang didn't understand why, but he knew Luo Zheng wasn't one to act without reason. Without questioning, he swiftly relayed the retreat order through his headset. The team fought and retreated, and once they were out of the enemy's range, they ran forward desperately. All the way, Luo Zheng's face was grim and silent. Zhou Gang wanted to ask several tis but held back.
The team ran hard for about half an hour, and Zhou Gang saw that everyone was heavily fatigued. He wanted to let everyone rest, but Luo Zheng showed no signs of stopping. Instead, he kept running forward, teeth gritted, urging everyone to keep going. The team moved silently through the forest, like a pack of hunting wolves.
Half an hour later, Luo Zheng slowed but continued to push on without stopping to rest. Zhou Gang didn't ask any questions but signaled for the team to follow. After about half an hour, they reached a mountain ridge. Having ascended the ridge and taken shelter in the trees, the team finally rested. Zhou Gang approached Luo Zheng, saluted solemnly, and exclaid joyfully, "Captain, I didn't expect it was you. I almost didn't recognize you."
"How did you end up here?" Luo Zheng asked in surprise.
"We were ordered to carry out a mission on the old trail. Initially, we were going to ambush that horse convoy carrying drugs, but then we chopped them down only to find it was you. After reporting to our superiors, we followed you. We couldn't keep up with your speed; after finally reaching Kuntai's valley, we saw the big explosion and a large number of enemies chasing after you. But you were too fast for us, so we decided to take a detour and wait for you ahead. Fortunately, we did," Zhou Gang quickly explained.
"Is that so?" Luo Zheng responded, pondering.
"Captain, that explosion was your doing, wasn't it? The blast was enormous; I think it even collapsed an entire mountain. Are you here on a secret mission? The Special Warfare Team leader said we should follow your commands. Reinforcents will arrive shortly to support us, so just give the orders," Zhou Gang said earnestly.
"Hmm, there was an ammunition depot below I managed to blow up," Luo Zheng said nonchalantly, as if it were nothing significant. But to Zhou Gang and the others, the news was a shock. Secretly infiltrating a cave, detonating an ammunition depot, and retreating unscathed from a base of tens of thousands of ard n? How capable must one be? Zhou Gang was about to inquire further when he heard Luo Zheng continue, "I owe you my thanks this ti. Without your tily appearance, I would have been done for. By the way, how many people have you brought?"
"I've brought a squad with ," Zhou Gang promptly replied.
"You're leading the team?" Luo Zheng asked, surprised.
"As for the reserve squad, after you left, we underwent so reforms in the team. In addition to the regular combat squads, we added a reserve squad, composed of new Special Forces recruits. I earned a few dals following your lead, and the team leader let act as the captain of this squad. This is the first ti we've been pulled out for actual combat," Zhou Gang explained, sowhat embarrassed.
"Congratulations," Luo Zheng said sincerely. It was a good thing to see a brother who had once shared life and death with him get promoted and gain greater opportunities for developnt.
"Xunzi, Binzi, Yuanzi, and Zhuzi have all followed my lead, just like . The Ghost Team has been completely replaced with new mbers," Zhou Gang continued to explain. He held imnse respect for Luo Zheng and, after calling all his subordinates over, he solemnly told them, "Guys, this is the founder of the Ghost Team, the captain I've often ntioned to you."
"Hello, Captain!" everyone shouted excitedly. The deeds of Luo Zheng were recorded on the Honor Wall of the Special Warfare Team, and from the team leader down, all officers would ntion the illustrious combat achievents of Ghost at various occasions to motivate everyone. Every Special Forces recruit who joined the Special Warfare Team would take the initiative to learn about them, inspiring respect and admiration. Seeing the man himself now, they all beca enthusiastic, looking at Luo Zheng with eyes full of warmth and respect.
"Hello, brothers. Enough about being a captain, that's all in the past. I want to thank you all this ti. Without you, I would have been done for today," Luo Zheng said graciously.
"You're joking, Captain. Even without us, you would have been able to get away," Zhou Gang said seriously, a trace of unwavering faith in Luo Zheng's abilities showing in his voice.
"Well, you're doing pretty well for yourself, becoming a squad captain and even knowing to wait here for ," Luo Zheng said with a laugh.
"Becoming a captain is all thanks to you. As for waiting here, it was partly a coincidence. After recognizing you and seeing you leading the enemy in circles, I guessed that you would definitely head east. Combining that with the surrounding topography, I figured you would pass through here. I didn't expect to guess right," Zhou Gang explained with a sheepish grin.
"You're getting to know better and better, eh?" Luo Zheng chuckled.
They chatted for a while and, just when everyone had rested enough and was preparing to move on, suddenly, birds flew out of the trees in alarm. Soone was in pursuit. Luo Zheng was startled and exchanged a look with Zhou Gang. They rushed towards another soldier and hadn't gone far when they saw more enemies approaching from the front, setting up a pincer attack from two sides.
"Captain, which way should we go?" Zhou Gang quickly asked.
"Don't panic. Since the enemy is attacking from both the east and west, we still have the south and north to choose from. Let's head south," Luo Zheng decided after a mont of thought, and the squad quickly dashed towards the south.
However, they hadn't run far when they encountered another ard group ahead. The number of people seed substantial, moving quickly amidst the trees. With enemies from the east and west, and now the south blocked, it ant they were surrounded. Luo Zheng's face turned cold; he hadn't expected so many pursuers to co. Annoyed, he bellowed, "Head south and we'll see from there!"
"Everyone be careful, charge!" Zhou Gang didn't hesitate either. He issued the order through his headset, leading the team forward in a swift charge. With firm and strong steps, he glanced at Luo Zheng from ti to ti, and his anxious heart settled down quickly.
