Next, Lan Xue did not introduce Luo Zheng and the others to Xinzi but instead started inquiring about the destination. The reason for not introducing them was not about trust but discipline. Xinzi belonged to a different departnt; only the person in charge needed to interact to prevent any incidents, a protocol distilled from generations' blood-soaked lessons and ford into a system.
Xinzi did not ask further, only glancing curiously at everyone, and then detailed the destination. Through Xinzi's account, everyone learned that the small town called Gonda was located on an oasis in the Gobi Desert, a five-day walk from their current location. However, Xinzi had brought an off-road vehicle, which ant they could cover the distance in just one day.
The town was ho to a tribe, roughly housing about fifty thousand people. The chief leader of the Terrorist Organization was an elder of this tribe, highly influential and well-integrated within the community. The outskirts of the town had no defenses, allowing anyone to enter, but the Terrorist Organization mbers, familiar with the terrain and mingling among the people, were hard to guard against.
Upon hearing this, Luo Zheng's expression grew solemn. If this was the case, they would be in constant danger upon entering, and with the enemy unidentified, random shooting would likely ignite the wrath of the entire town. Moreover, it was challenging to find soone in such a town; asking around might accidentally reveal their intentions to a Terrorist Organization mber.
"Hiss?" The others also realized this point and looked solemn.
Lan Xue pondered for a mont, then continued asking, "What about their weapons and equipnt?"
"Plenty of vehicles, good for pursuit, mainly AK series firearms, plenty of RPGs as well, and so modified armored vehicles. I heard that there are about a thousand ard personnel stationed regularly. If a battle reaches a deadlock, other ard personnel from nearby areas can quickly join the fight, arriving in no more than three hours, with numbers exceeding five thousand," Xinzi earnestly explained.
"Then we have no choice but to infiltrate," Lan Xue said earnestly, glancing at Luo Zheng. Luo Zheng nodded silently; under such enemy circumstances, infiltration was undoubtedly the best strategy. It was better to act once they had a clearer understanding of the situation.
After a mont of thought, Xinzi spoke with so difficulty, "I understand the discipline. Technically, I shouldn't be prying. My superiors sent to cooperate with you, to follow your orders, without specifying the precise mission. However, without knowing your exact mission, I don't know how to offer suggestions. How about this—arrange for a couple of people to enter the town ahead with to gather the necessary information. Fewer people make it easier to move; then we can adapt based on the situation."
"That sounds good," Lan Xue said thoughtfully.
Having established a rough plan, everyone discussed so details and then rested.
Over the next three days, they stayed in the village, teaching the village won combat basics, such as various shooting positions, alternating cover and attack tactics, how to avoid attacks, how to defend, and so forth. How much they could learn was up to them; ultimately, everyone must rely on themselves.
Three nights later, after a hearty al and farewells to the villagers, they boarded the off-road vehicle Xinzi had brought and headed toward their destination. The vehicle made travel much easier. Though the road was rough and they had to drive slowly, by rotating drivers without changing vehicles, they arrived on the outskirts of Gonda Town, three kiloters away, at dawn and hid in a sand dune to observe.
The outskirts of the town were surrounded by hills, about a hundred ters high, encircling the town. The towering sand dunes and hills blocked the sandstorms, forming an oasis. There was a lake atop the oasis, but the houses were built on the other side, maintaining a certain distance from the lake to ensure the water remained unpolluted. A desert road andered out of the town.
Luo Zheng raised his binoculars and observed for a while before noting that this town had seen many years, with no walls but houses whose walls were mottled and severely weathered. The streets inside the town were relatively clean with many people coming and going, and there appeared to be a marketplace gathering many cals and goods where people traded mostly through bartering.
There were no ard personnel carrying guns visible on the streets, which heightened Luo Zheng's alertness. The hidden enemy was always more dangerous. He passed the binoculars to Lan Xue but noticed Xinzi curiously watching him. Luo Zheng offered a polite, light smile though internally he felt puzzled and suspiciously glanced at Xinzi before whispering to Lan Xue, "This battle won't be easy."
"I'll scout around. You guys stay hidden here and act according to circumstances," Lan Xue whispered.
"Wait a mont," Luo Zheng hastily exclaid, glancing at the rising sun that was sowhat dazzling yet reassuring. He took a deep breath and said, "You stay and command, I'll go."
"Fine, you tell the task, and I'll inquire around since I've been here before and as a local, I am less likely to raise suspicion," Xinzi suggested.
Upon hearing this, Lan Xue saw the logic but caught Luo Zheng's covert glance which made her pause and then understand, laughing as she said, "No, your role is to translate and guide, and since you've brought us here, the guiding part is pretty much done. As for translating, accompany , block any issues for and then I will tell you what to do and how to do it."
Xinzi nodded indifferently without further comnt, but Luo Zheng pressed Lan Xue's shoulder, shaking his head and said with a determined look and an undeniable tone, "Let go."
Lan Xue sensed that Luo Zheng had concerns; after a thought, she did not insist but advised him to be careful. He agreed, quickly removing his coat to reveal a camouflaged T-shirt underneath. He took off his steel helt, wiped off the oil paint, blackened his face, and donned a black robe borrowed from the previous village, concealing his military deanor with a hat.
However, Luo Zheng strapped Sword Dragon Tooth on his back with the black robe being loose and long enough to cover it. He also packed away Tiger Teeth, carried a Type 92 pistol, and after a thought, took extra magazines for everyone as backup. He unsuspectingly touched the belt tucked inside his bodysuit, which was hiding iron nails. Although everyone didn't know why Luo Zheng was carrying so many magazines, they didn't ask further questions.
Having prepared everything, Luo Zheng glanced at Xinzi, who nodded. They circled down towards the town. After Luo Zheng and Xinzi had gone far, Lan Xue suddenly looked at everyone with a solemn face and said, "Is Ghost behaving a bit oddly? Has he discovered sothing?"
"Are you suggesting?" Ghost Hand asked in surprise, his face growing serious as he watched Luo Zheng's retreating figure.
Upon hearing Lan Xue, both Mountain Eagle and Snow Leopard beca alert, watching Luo Zheng's back. Mountain Eagle asked cautiously, "Captain, have you sensed sothing? Should we take any asures?"
"Everyone has studied the layout of the town. There's only one exit with high sand dunes on the other three sides. Mountain Eagle, imdiately circle to the opposite hill at the exit to find a place to ambush. Ghost Hand, you too. Snow Leopard and I will ambush from this side. If necessary, we'll cover Ghost's retreat," Lan Xue said earnestly.
