The silence that followed the slamming door was so profound it felt heavier than the $150,000 Ethan had just paid. Alfred, Martha, and Lilly all stared first at the empty doorway, then at Ethan, their faces frozen in a mixture of shock, disbelief, and fear.
Alfred was the first to move. He stumbled towards Ethan, his face red. "Ethan, what have you done?! Son, that was all your money! You can’t just throw away that much money! Where did you even get $150,000?!"
Martha rushed forward, tears welling in her eyes, but hers were tears of gratitude mixed with terror. She grabbed his face with both hands. "Oh, my sweet boy! You saved us! But those people... they’re dangerous! You put yourself in danger for us!"
Lilly, still trembling, threw her arms around him again, burying her face in his chest. "Ethan, I was so scared! You were incredible, but they looked like they wanted to kill you!"
Ethan held Lilly tightly for a mont, letting the warmth of her fear ground his own residual rage. He pulled back, his eyes soft but determined. He looked at the three of them—the only real family he had left.
"Calm down, all of you," Ethan said, his voice firm but gentle. He made sure to project a calm confidence that masked the turmoil of the past few weeks. "First, Uncle Alfred, Aunt Martha, listen to : that was not all my money. That was pocket change. I told you I got a great job, right? Well, I wasn’t kidding. I’m doing very well. That $150,000? It’s gone, and I don’t care. It’s the cost of keeping my family safe."
Alfred looked utterly lost. "Pocket change? Ethan, what are you doing? What is this job?"
"I can’t tell you the specifics, Uncle," Ethan said, placing a reassuring hand on Alfred’s flour-dusted shoulder. "But look at . Do I look like the kind of kid who needs saving now? I can handle myself, and I can handle these thugs." He glanced at Lilly and smiled. "And no one—absolutely no one—is going to look at my girl and tell they’re taking her away. Ever. That debt is paid, and that contract is dead."
Martha wiped her eyes, a faint, proud smile breaking through her worry. "My brave boy..."
Alfred, however, was still struggling. "But, son... now they’ll co after you! They wanted the property, Ethan! They’re going to use this as an excuse to hurt you!"
[He’s got a point, champ,] the System chid in, its voice serious for once. [They wanted the land, not the money. Now you’ve pissed them off and shown them you have disposable wealth. You’re a target, and you owe them nothing.]
Ethan nodded, his expression darkening slightly. "I know, Uncle Alfred. And I’m ready for them. I have things to deal with—that eting I ntioned earlier—but I promise you, I will deal with this too. You don’t have to worry about them ever again. Just worry about making more of that amazing pizza."
He gave them one final, fierce hug. "I have to go, now. Don’t worry. I’ll call you as soon as I can, Lilly. We still have that date."
Lilly’s blush deepened. What had seed like a simple joke before now felt incredibly real—her childhood crush, the one who just saved their family from the Mafia, truly ca back for her. "Yes! Call ," she managed, her voice breathless. "We can set up the date whenever you have ti."
Alfred and Martha gave him one last, crushing family hug, their gratitude radiating from them.
Ethan finally managed to disentangle himself and walked out of the pizzeria. As he reached his car in the parking lot, he glanced back at the building. The na, "The Captain’s Slice," glowed brightly in old neon lights above the entrance. He sighed, a genuine smile replacing the cold anger from monts before. He felt a deep satisfaction at having protected them.
[So, did you enjoy that last hug?] the System imdiately chirped, its tone laced with mockery. [Did you get to cop a feel of Lilly’s ass this ti? And Aunt Martha’s enormous tits felt pretty good, right? Co on, you can tell , champ!]
Ethan rolled his eyes. "Stop it, System! Don’t be an ass," he muttered under his breath, opening his car door. "I was being serious with them. I would never disrespect them like that, ever."
[Yeah, sure you wouldn’t,] the System drawled, unconvinced.
Ethan ignored it. He didn’t want to waste any more ti. He walked past his car, pulling his jacket tighter around him, and quickly strode across the parking lot and turned down the dark alley adjacent to The Captain’s Slice.
The alley was lined with overflowing dumpsters and slled strongly of stale grease and decay. This is it, Ethan thought, his mind snapping back into mission mode. This was where his father used to take his "important calls." A dark, dirty, forgotten corner of a familiar street. The perfect spot for a clandestine eting about murder and retribution.
He pulled the sleek black card from his wallet—the one he’d received from Agent Alpha—and stared at the phone number and the simple code. He knew he could call this number and have a team of professionals waiting here in minutes, providing back-up or extracting him.
I don’t need them.
He slid the card back in. He didn’t want to owe anything to that kind of dangerous organization. He had his own power now, and his own secrets. He had the money, he had the System, and now he had the skill.
He took a deep breath, flexing the muscles in his forearms. He was still aching from the muscle shock of acquiring the Professional Boxer skill, but he was ready.
He stopped where the alley got darkest, the back wall of the pizzeria looming over him, and waited.
A low, gravelly voice cut through the silence, seemingly coming from the shadows near the rear dumpster. "Co closer, young man. We have things to discuss."
Ethan’s body instantly snapped into high alert. He shoved his hands deep into his pockets—a move that looked casual, but allowed him to subtly flex his new core strength and prepare for any sudden movent or ambush. He took a steadying breath and fixed his gaze into the gloom, ready to fight or run.
