Chapter 152

Kael did not move away after that.

He stayed close, his forehead still resting lightly against Ariana’s for a few quiet seconds while he forced his breathing to steady. Ariana could feel the effort it took through every point of contact between them. The tension in him had eased slightly, but it had not disappeared, and she knew now that it probably wouldn’t disappear completely anymore.

Not while the Lycan stayed this close to the surface.

Not while she stayed this close to him.

When Kael finally lifted his head, his hand remained at her waist for another mont before he slowly let go and stepped back just enough to put space between them. It wasn’t much distance, but Ariana noticed the difference imdiately.

So did he.

His jaw tightened slightly as if even that small amount of separation felt wrong now.

Ariana folded her arms loosely, more to keep herself grounded than defensive. "You’re doing it again," she said quietly.

Kael frowned. "Doing what?"

"Trying to convince yourself distance fixes this."

"It helps."

"It didn’t seem like it helped."

A faint look of frustration crossed his face, but it disappeared almost imdiately. "Ariana—"

"No," she interrupted gently. "You keep acting like I’m safer farther away from you, but everything you’ve said tonight tells the opposite."

That made him go quiet.

Ariana stepped closer again, slower this ti, giving him enough ti to stop her if he wanted to.

He didn’t.

"You said it reacts to ," she continued. "You said it doesn’t see as separate. So why are you still trying to push away every ti it gets stronger?"

Kael looked at her for a long mont before answering.

"Because I know what happens when I stop trying."

The honesty in his voice made her chest tighten.

Ariana reached for his hand again, threading her fingers through his before he could pull away. "Then maybe the problem isn’t that you stop trying," she said quietly. "Maybe the problem is that you’re trying to fight it alone."

Kael let out a slow breath, his gaze dropping briefly to their hands before lifting back to her face. "You really don’t scare easily."

"That’s not true."

His brows pulled together slightly. "Then why are you still here?"

Ariana held his gaze. "Because I trust you."

The answer hit him harder than she expected.

She saw it in the way his expression changed, subtle but imdiate, like sothing in him tightened and softened at the sa ti.

"You shouldn’t say things like that so easily," he said.

"I’m not saying it easily."

The room went quiet again.

Outside, the wind moved faintly through the trees surrounding the house, but inside everything felt still, closed off from the rest of the world in a way that made every word between them feel heavier.

Kael looked tired now.

Not physically.

Sothing deeper than that.

Ariana noticed it in the way he carried himself, the constant effort behind every controlled movent, every asured breath.

"When was the last ti you actually rested?" she asked.

Kael blinked slightly, caught off guard by the question. "What?"

"You heard ."

A faint breath left him, almost amused despite the tension still lingering between them. "I don’t know."

"That’s not a real answer."

"It’s the only one I have."

Ariana shook her head slightly. "You’ve been carrying this by yourself for too long."

Kael’s expression hardened just enough to tell her she had touched sothing he usually kept buried. "That’s how it’s always been."

"Well, maybe that’s the problem."

He looked at her carefully then, like he was trying to decide whether to argue or simply let her keep talking.

Ariana stepped closer until there was barely any space left between them again. "You keep talking about losing control like it’s inevitable," she said softly. "But every ti tonight you thought you were about to hurt , you stopped yourself."

"Barely."

"But you still did it."

Kael looked away for a mont, tension flickering across his face again. "You don’t understand how close it was."

"Then tell ."

His throat tightened visibly before he answered.

"When you touched earlier," he said slowly, "part of didn’t want you to step back."

Ariana’s breath slowed.

Kael continued before she could answer.

"And the worst part is that it wasn’t just the Lycan."

The confession settled heavily between them.

Ariana studied him quietly, her fingers tightening slightly around his hand. "You think that makes this worse?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because if it was only the Lycan, I could bla it on instinct."

His voice dropped lower near the end, rougher now.

"But it’s not," he admitted.

Ariana’s chest tightened painfully at the honesty in his expression.

For a mont, neither of them spoke.

Then she lifted her free hand and touched his face gently, her fingers brushing against the tension in his jaw.

"You keep acting like caring about is the dangerous part," she said quietly.

"It is."

"No," she replied. "The dangerous part is thinking you have to carry all of this alone."

Kael closed his eyes briefly at her touch, and she felt the way his breathing shifted again, not unstable this ti, just tired.

When he opened his eyes again, sothing in them looked different.

Less guarded.

"Ariana," he said quietly, "if this gets worse—"

"It will," she interrupted softly. "We both know that."

His expression tightened.

"But I’m still here," she continued before he could speak again. "And unless you physically throw out that door, I’m not going anywhere tonight."

A small, tired breath escaped him at that, closer to a real laugh than anything she had heard from him all evening.

"You’re impossible."

"You noticed."

That finally pulled a faint smile from him, brief but real enough to make sothing in her chest loosen.

It disappeared quickly, though.

Because the mont his expression relaxed, Ariana felt it again.

A subtle shift moved through the room, quiet enough that Ariana almost missed it at first, but Kael noticed it imdiately. His body tensed beneath her touch, and the change in his expression told her he had sensed sothing before she did.

She saw the change imdiately in the way his shoulders stiffened and the way his focus snapped toward the door.

"Ariana," he said quietly.

This ti, there was warning in his voice again.

Not because of her.

Because of sothing outside.

A second later, a hard knock echoed through the house.

Neither of them moved.

Then Mira’s voice ca through the other side of the door.

"Kael," she said calmly. "We need to talk."
