Chapter 890: Chapter 881: Missing the Mark (1)

Bo Yan normally isn’t heartless, but he’s just a bit more rational, like just now when a few young people, carrying flower baskets, asked him to buy roses for his girlfriend, he didn’t make a purchase.

A bunch of China roses pretending to be roses dared to sell for thirty yuan each, money really is too easy to make these days.

Xia Siyu ca over and saw a lot of fragrant, sweet, and soft roasted sweet potatoes, oozing with oil. She didn’t care about maintaining any celebrity image at all; her favorite thing wasn’t so high-class French cuisine but these street stalls, and she quickly grabbed Bo Yan to buy so.

Just as Bo Yan was about to ask the price, the vendor apologized in an accent: “Could you use cash? I don’t have a QR code, and if I did, it goes directly to my son’s account.”

Bo Yan nodded, so that’s how it is, no wonder there was such a large crowd today, yet this small stall had few custors – without mobile paynt, most people couldn’t make a paynt.

However, this was no problem for him. He had brought so change with him, anticipating that Xia Siyu would want to browse the night market, and asked the vendor to pick out a heart-shaped sweet potato that had exploded skin from being roasted and was still oozing with oil. Xia Siyu had watched the fireworks for a long ti and was indeed a bit hungry. Since there was no one else around, she picked up the sweet potato and took a bite. It was very hot, burning her hands and mouth, but it was deliciously sweet and exceptionally soft.

Bo Yan handed over a twenty-yuan note, not expecting the vendor to give him back fifteen yuan. She rummaged through her change box and even gave him an additional fifty cents.

It had been many years since Bo Yan had bought such cheap and large snacks; he was a little shocked for a mont. The sweet potato had clearly been weighed just now, at least two pounds, yet they only charged him a little over four yuan!

Xia Siyu also saw this, her expression slightly bittersweet. Bo Yan turned to look at her, then at the old woman; her face was sared with coal dust, and her clothes were a bit dirty from the charcoal smoke, but her hands were very clean. She just smiled: “These are grown by our family, and sweet potatoes are cheap this year, just a few cents per pound. I’m just earning a bit for the hard work.”

Bo Yan nodded, turned to look at Xia Siyu again, his eyes softening, and asked her, “Is it tasty?”

Holding the sweet potato, Xia Siyu nodded vigorously, and Bo Yan smiled, “How many more sweet potatoes do you have? I’d like to buy them for my friends to eat together. There are quite a few of us here, and everyone likes them.”

He wanted to help without giving money directly. The vendor had co out to set up her stall in the cold weather, earning money through her own honest work; giving her cash straight away would be too humiliating, and he couldn’t do that.

The old woman weighed things up; thanks to tonight’s fireworks show, she had sold more than usual and only had less than ten pounds left. Bo Yan bought them all, handing her fifty yuan, but she seed a bit troubled: “I… I can’t give change.”

She didn’t have enough small change, but Bo Yan was amiable. He smiled: “Then, could you please give us a few extra plastic bags so we can distribute them. We’ll share them with our friends later. They charge for plastic bags in the supermarkets now.”

She quickly nodded, made every effort to give him the right change, prepared several greaseproof paper sheets, and doubled them with several plastic bags to hand over to him.

Bo Yan carried them in his hand, walking back with Xia Siyu. There was a slight stir in Siyu’s heart, and she stopped gnawing on the sweet potato at the corner of her mouth: “Do you still rember the people in the Northwest?”

Before, they had donated to build a Hope Primary School and helped pave roads for the village. But sohow, it felt like there was still sothing heavy in their hearts.
