The firefighters looked at each other, feeling as though the hands holding back the children’s parents were weighed down by a thousand pounds.
One of them couldn’t hold back and approached the captain, saying, "Captain, let’s go in! Even if we can only save one child, I would feel a bit better!"
The captain’s eyes were bloodshot: "The order from above is for all of you to stay put. Keep the parents from getting themselves killed by going in!"
The team mber exclaid in anger, "Captain! That’s over a dozen lives, and they’re all children! How can you be so cold-blooded?"
The captain replied with a blank expression, "Yes, your captain is a cold and heartless person. That’s why I am keeping you from going in, and that’s why I haven’t gone in either."
The mber asked in shock, "What do you an by this?"
The captain put on his hat and said, "Don’t you understand? I’ve been here the whole ti, not going in, so if asked later, you know how to respond, don’t you?"
The mber, feeling a surge of emotion, had tears welling in his eyes: "Captain, you’re going in by yourself?"
Still expressionless, the captain said, "The building is about to collapse. I can’t watch you get yourselves killed. If anyone is to die, it should be , the captain, first. Everyone stays put on standby, I’m just going to the bathroom!"
As he said this, he ran towards the building.
Inside the building.
Sumr Monroe was completely drained. Though only ten ters from the lobby, she couldn’t take another step.
Her breathing had beco labored from inhaling too many harmful particles, and her vision was gradually blurring.
She sensed that she had reached her limit.
In the next instant, Sumr’s legs gave way, causing her to fall forward.
But because she was still holding two children, she instinctively rolled over, holding the children tightly, and fell backward, her head hitting the ground, facing the sky.
"Sister!" Several older children hurriedly surrounded her.
Sumr spoke hoarsely, "Sister... can’t move anymore. Help carry these two little ones, just ten ters ahead is the door, your mothers will be waiting outside for you."
The children shook their heads, crying, "No, I want sister to co with us..."
One child even held her arm, trying to lift her up.
But with too little strength, within seconds, Sumr fell back down again.
Sumr shook her head, weak and exhausted, "Don’t waste ti, you go first, get the adults to co for once you’re out, promise sister, okay?"
The children nodded tearfully, took the two babies from Sumr’s arms, and together made difficult progress toward the door.
With the last bit of her strength, Sumr watched the children, until she saw them safely run out the door, her heart finally eased.
At the sa ti, her vision beca even more blurred, and her eyes slowly closed.
Just before losing consciousness, she vaguely saw soone in a firefighter’s suit stride toward her through the door...
"Miss, can you hear ? Wake up!!"
The firefighter captain saw that Sumr did not respond, but there was still so breath detectable, so he imdiately hoisted her onto his back and started running out.
With their years of training, carrying soone while running out wasn’t difficult. Soon, he carried Sumr out of the building.
Outside the building, children and parents finally reunited, causing another wave of cries.
The young assistant saw Sumr being brought out and imdiately rushed over, crying, "What’s wrong with Miss Sadie? Is she still alive?"
"She’s still alive! Water! We need so water here!"
