After a full half hour, the light gradually faded, but Sumr Monroe still hadn’t found an answer to her strange emotions.
She shook her head, decided not to think about it, got up and turned on the room light, pulled out the letter Pat had given her, and sat at the desk to read quietly.
The letter was on the stationery Pat often used, with a red heart drawn at the top.
Seeing that heart, Sumr’s heart softened completely.
Pat wrote, "Dear sister, I haven’t seen you for a long ti. I really want to go to Cathaysia to see you, but Mom and Dad said you’re doing sothing important and told not to disturb you. Okay, big kids don’t disturb adults doing important things. But I have a lot to tell you, even though I don’t know when you’ll get to read this letter—"
After the dash was a crying face. Sumr smiled knowingly and continued reading.
"This sester, I’ve made new friends and even got a girlfriend. Her na is Sophia, and she was the one who went after . I agreed because she gives milk every day. But she’s really clingy, wants to hang out with after every class. But since I’m her boyfriend now, I’ll take good care of her, and reluctantly put up with her clinginess. Please don’t tell Mom and Dad about this, it’s our little secret. Yesterday, I overheard Mom and Dad talking about Rhea next door getting married. Sister, when are you getting married? Have you found a boyfriend?"
Sumr smiled wryly.
Pat, as always, being a little adult, was even worried about her marriage.
But then, Pat wrote, "But I don’t want you to get married, sister. Since Rhea got married, she never takes to the amusent park anymore. Sister, when can you co back? I can already help Mom with house chores, and I clean your room every day. The gifts my friends gave , I haven’t opened them. I’ll wait for you to co back, and we’ll open them together. Sister, please co back soon. I really, really, really miss you. Your Pat."
At the end, there was a long string of hearts in various colors.
After reading the letter, Sumr was surprised to find tears streaming down her face.
She laughed at herself, I’m a grown-up, how can a letter still make cry?
Sumr grabbed a tissue to wipe away her tears, then neatly folded the letter and tucked it into her favorite book on the shelf.
After that, Sumr dialed her subordinate’s number and asked, "What’s the situation?"
The person respectfully answered, "The progress on Dottie’s end is a bit slow; we’ve only gathered less than half the information. Without your orders, we dare not interfere. Do you think... should we intervene?"
"No need, no rush," Sumr said indifferently, "a rush could alert them. There must still be people from Henry Stanton on the other side. You should remain unseen and let Dottie handle it. No one pays attention to or suspects what a kid does."
"Yes!"
The call ended, and Sumr gazed into the distance.
Yes, she mustn’t let Pat’s letter disrupt her pace; rushing leads to disorder, and with disorder, there will be flaws in her plan, and then it will take even longer to return to Pat and her parents.
She must proceed steadily, one step at a ti, solidly.
Evening ca quickly.
Sumr still hadn’t received any information from Damian Knight. She thought of sending a ssage to ask about Cece’s situation, but after composing it, she deleted it all.
Forget it, she told herself; Isaac Ross’s hospital had gathered many excellent doctors, and since Cece’s injury wasn’t life-threatening, there was no need to worry so much. If Damian hadn’t sent her any news, then it must be good news.
