Wan Donglin remained composed and silently put her phone back on the charger.
When he turned back, he saw her lying there with her eyes closed. He breathed a quiet sigh of relief. Just as he was about to turn away again, he suddenly heard her demand, "Give the phone!"
"It’s out of battery. It needs to be charged first."
"Give it to , quickly."
"It’s really low on battery. It needs to charge more. You can use it later."
She growled, "Just give it to when I tell you to!"
He had no choice but to hand the phone over. She took it, glanced at the screen, turned it off, fiddled with it for a few monts, then turned it back on. It imdiately picked up a signal.
She shot him a fierce glare. He actually blushed but chuckled, "I didn’t really tamper with it, just fiddled with the battery a bit..."
Sure enough, the text ssage alert chid—many of them, all from Huang Xiaojue. She didn’t bother replying to the texts and imdiately dialed Huang Xiaojue’s number. The call connected instantly.
"Xixi, you’re not hurt, are you?"
That was his first question. Her nose instantly prickled, and she felt a lump in her throat.
"Xixi, where are you? Are you safe?"
Over the phone, Huang Xiaojue’s voice was hoarse. She couldn’t imagine how frantic he must have been these past two days. Her eyes reddened, and she nearly cried. But she only paused for a mont, doing her best to compose herself. "Xiaojue, I’m fine... Don’t worry..."
"Xixi, where on earth are you? I’ll co and get you..."
She glanced at the IV needle in her wrist, then out the window. The scenery outside was unfamiliar. Clearly, this wasn’t the sa house as before. Wan Donglin had moved her to a new location. No wonder Huang Xiaojue couldn’t find her.
Wan Donglin’s gaze followed hers, and he felt a flicker of nervousness. When her eyes finally t his, his tension intensified, yet his expression remained unchanged as he stared fixedly at her. Their eyes conveyed two distinct ssages:
Wan Donglin, I am leaving this place, and you won’t stop . Moreover, I will never, ever submit to you.
Yan Xixi, I may not be able to do anything to you, but I can’t say the sa for Huang Xiaojue. If he dares to force his way in, I won’t go easy on him. You’d better weigh your options carefully.
It was a silent standoff. However, she felt dizzy and weak, utterly drained of strength, aware only of the IV drip flowing into the veins of her wrist. When her gaze fell upon his hand, bandaged like a rice dumpling, this feeling of helplessness intensified.
Wan Donglin... He wouldn’t let her go this easily.
After all, she was still afraid that Xiaojue would get hurt.
"Xixi... Xixi... Are you listening to ? Are you hurt? Xixi, don’t be afraid. Tell the truth. I know you were kidnapped by that beast..."
Kidnapped! Xiaojue actually called it kidnapping.
Suddenly, she laughed, swallowing back her tears. Xiaojue, just hearing you say that word proves I was never wrong about you!
Her voice was surprisingly gentle and composed. "Xiaojue, don’t worry. I can protect myself. Go ho first and spend the New Year with your parents. I’ll co back to find you in a few days..."
On the other end of the line, Huang Xiaojue’s voice was frantic. "Xixi, is he the one tornting you? Don’t be afraid! Tell your address, and I’ll co get you right away..."
"There’s no need. I’ll co back on my own."
"Xixi..."
"Xiaojue, I really wasn’t hurt. Don’t worry. I can handle this myself."
"No, I’m coming right now..."
"Xiaojue, please don’t worry. I’m in a very safe place. I’ll take good care of myself and won’t let anything happen to . Please, believe !"
