Wan Donglin chuckled bitterly. "What do you expect to do?"
Zhou Ting said flatly, "Help my cousin get through this crisis!"
Wan Donglin stood up, his gaze profound and inscrutable. "Zhou Ting, are you overestimating ?"
Zhou Ting didn’t hesitate. "No one dares to underestimate the Wan Family, especially your mother!"
Wan Donglin didn’t shut her down right away but said slowly, "This matter is too big. I can’t make any promises to you. I have to discuss it with my mother first."
Upon hearing his softening stance, Zhou Ting smiled and stood up. "Donglin, thank you. If you help us this ti, the Zhou Family will certainly repay the favor should you ever need our assistance."
Wan Donglin spread his hands, saying nothing.
Zhou Ting had reached the doorway when she turned back. "Donglin, I want to ask you one last question..."
"What is it?"
"Why did you fall in love with Miss Yan?"
Wan Donglin countered, "Who said I fell in love with her?"
"If you don’t love her, then how do you explain that boutique? Donglin, you insisted on breaking up with because of her, didn’t you?"
Wan Donglin laughed loudly. "Zhou Ting, that doesn’t sound like you. You know very well the real reason we broke up..." He added dismissively, "Do you think people like us are capable of loving anyone?"
Zhou Ting was stunned.
"Zhou Ting, have you ever truly loved any man?"
Zhou Ting gave a bitter smile, then turned and left.
Not until her figure completely vanished did Wan Donglin let out a long sigh. He picked up the file from the table and slamd it hard onto the floor.
That crafty Old Zhou!
It was common knowledge that her nephew’s insatiable greed had caused a massive public outcry. A quick online search would imdiately show results filled with accusations like ’ga-Corrupt Official.’ And yet, Zhou Ting spoke of this matter, involving tens of billions, as if it were a simple favor.
How could I help? Who would dare to help?
It was evident Zhou Ting ca prepared today, using both carrot and stick. She was basically saying I had to help, whether I wanted to or not. Otherwise, she’d drag my mother into it, even if it ant digging up sothing from fifteen years ago.
Just then, the phone rang.
"Lady Daqing, what a coincidence! I was just about to call you. Heh, it seems we mother and son truly have so telepathy."
"Cut the clowning, kid. Has Zhou Ting contacted you recently?"
His smile vanished, and his tone grew serious. "Lady Daqing, they’ve officially warned . If we don’t cooperate, they’ll drag you down too."
Liu Daqing’s voice remained unchanged. "Donglin, accompany on a trip next week. We will absolutely not start trouble, but if trouble cos, we absolutely must not fear it."
"Mom, you must be extrely careful these days."
"I’ll be fine. Donglin, it’s you who must be careful."
Wan Donglin hung up. He picked up the file from the floor. It contained nothing but a string of cold, hard data, yet he had never felt so uneasy. Who knew how many people would fall next?
He suddenly thought of Yan Xixi and couldn’t understand why Zhou Ting had deliberately ntioned her today.
By then, he had already driven to the entrance of her apartnt complex. Suddenly, he had an overwhelming urge to see her—after all, she had broken up with Huang Xiaojue, hadn’t she?
He imdiately sent her a ssage.
She replied quickly, "Hey, crusty man, I’m making dinner. Don’t disturb ."
He felt a wave of relief and chuckled. "Miss, you’ve completely broken up with your boyfriend, haven’t you?"
"Who says?"
"If you haven’t, then you must be the Emperor’s mother..."
She was curious. "Why?"
"(Because you’re as thick-skinned as the) Empress Dowager."
Yan Xixi let out an exasperated laugh.
"Miss, go to your window and look down. Guess what you’ll see?"
Yan Xixi, even more curious now, actually walked to the window, leaned out, and looked down...
