Vera Xavier turned her head and saw Susan Caldwell standing next to Skylar Crowe. The mont she saw Susan, she imdiately picked the largest pin from the sewing box and clutched it in her palm.
Vera Xavier’s eyes narrowed slightly. The person who had stolen her identity was standing right in front of her. ’Fate is a mysterious thing,’ she mused.
At that mont, Susan Caldwell and Skylar Crowe were standing backlit in the hotel entrance. Susan wore a knee-length, light pink trench coat, looking striking and chic.
Undeniably, Susan Caldwell had grown into a true beauty. Her looks combined all the best features of Zachary Preston and Rona Langdon: fair skin, bright yet coolly distant eyes, a straight nose, and rosy lips. Paired with her pampered upbringing, she carried herself with an exceptional air.
Standing beside Susan was a man of average height. He looked to be in his twenties. His eagle-like eyes swept over Vera, his gaze icy and devoid of emotion.
Vera recognized the man as Susan’s bodyguard, Leo Wright. He had once been a top operative at a security company but was expelled for making a mistake. Mr. Caldwell, appreciating his talent, had hired him to be Susan’s bodyguard.
As Vera sized up Susan, Susan was studying her in turn. After all, people tended to be more restrained when away from ho. A girl like Vera, who dared to get physical in an unfamiliar place, was a rare sight. In Susan’s eyes, Vera wouldn’t have dared to make a move unless she had powerful backing.
But the more Susan looked at Vera, the more alard she beca. Vera’s features resembled neither Mr. Caldwell nor Mrs. Caldwell, but she bore a striking resemblance to the Caldwell family’s old matriarch.
The Caldwell matriarch had been a renowned beauty in Veridia back in her day, and it was said her own mother had been a noble princess from the Palace of Purity.
Most importantly, Vera’s expression was far too calm and composed. Her clear eyes held a hint of condescending disdain, and her delicately arched brows concealed a trace of scorn. An innate nobility seed to radiate from her very bones, daring anyone to underestimate her.
A strange intuition surfaced in Susan’s heart, as if she had just t her fated nesis. ’And a powerful one at that!’
The Caldwell family’s education of Susan had always been top-notch—a true elite upbringing.
Beyond cultivating her refined deanor, they had also developed her abilities in various other areas, one of which was the skill of reading people.
It was precisely because she possessed such remarkable abilities, and knew exactly which lines she could and couldn’t cross, that her true nature had never been exposed. Even Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell had no idea what she did behind their backs.
When Skylar Crowe saw Susan staring at Vera without saying a word, she grew anxious. Tugging on Susan’s hand, she pleaded, "Susan, we’re best friends! I just got beaten up, you have to stand up for !"
Skylar Crowe was a complete ss. Her face was red and swollen, and she looked utterly wretched.
Her eyes, however, were bloodshot, and the look she gave Vera was so full of hate it seed she wanted to leap forward and take a bite out of her.
Only then did Susan Caldwell turn her cool gaze to Vera. "I’m not sure what my friend did to you," she said, "to make you react so viciously."
Susan’s voice was lovely—clear, lodious, and tinged with a soft sweetness that made her sound quite amicable.
But her slightly raised brow gave her away, betraying a mixture of pride, indifference, and disdain.
She wouldn’t act rashly before figuring out Vera’s identity. Her words were rely a test.
