Xu Chongshan thought both Yun Hao and Xu Wenwan had a screw loose. They were a perfect match for each other.
He couldn’t be bothered with their affairs and was about to go back to sharpening his sickle.
But then, his father’s voice ca from inside the room.
Only then did Xu Chongshan put the sickle away in the woodshed and head into the house.
The mont he stepped inside, Village Chief Xu spoke.
"Go get your eldest brother and his wife."
They would leave Yu Fangfang out of it. It wouldn’t be good if sothing were to upset her during her pregnancy.
Without a word, Xu Chongshan turned and went to Xu Chongfeng’s room, then brought Xu Chongfeng and Chen Xiaoli to the main room.
Chen Xiaoli walked in, and as soon as she sat down, her gaze drifted involuntarily to Yun Hao.
The sight gave Chen Xiaoli a start.
The Yun Hao of the past had been dashing and full of confidence. But the Yun Hao of today sat hunched over on a low stool, radiating an aura of utter dejection.
’If not for the fact that Yun Hao ca to the countryside alone and has no twin, I would’ve sworn this was soone else!’
Once everyone was seated, Village Chief Xu asked Chen Xiaoli to pour so water.
But Chen Xiaoli just kept staring at Yun Hao.
Beside her, Xu Chongfeng’s expression instantly darkened. He nudged Chen Xiaoli with his elbow and whispered, "Dad asked you to pour the water."
Chen Xiaoli finally snapped out of it and hurried to the kitchen.
She found a few bowls and filled them with water.
Then, rembering that Yun Hao was here to propose, she paused and added a spoonful of sugar to each bowl.
’No matter how flaky her sister-in-law was, a marriage proposal was still a joyous occasion.’
Back in the main room, Village Chief Xu glanced at Yun Hao, his tone chilly. "You’re here to propose marriage?"
"Yes," Yun Hao affird.
"Then you shouldn’t have co alone."
Village Chief Xu’s frown deepened. ’For a marriage proposal, he should have at least brought a matchmaker.’
Yun Hao had expected this question and had already prepared his answer.
"Village Chief Xu, you must know that I’m an educated youth. My parents aren’t here, and I don’t have any close elders in the area, so I ca by myself."
"This is all I can offer. If you’re not satisfied, Village Chief Xu, there’s nothing I can do about it."
Yun Hao looked completely indifferent. ’He had been forced to co here in the first place, and he was seething with resentnt.’
As a result, his words ca out laced with a touch of passive-aggression.
But Xu Chongshan imdiately lost his temper.
"Looks to like you’re asking for a beating."
"Showing up empty-handed, with nothing but the clothes on your back, and you call this a marriage proposal? Who do you think you’re insulting?!"
With that, he moved to teach Yun Hao a lesson.
He could ignore his sister’s affairs, but he couldn’t just stand by while Yun Hao insulted his parents like this.
Yun Hao jumped in fright, leaping up from the stool and dodging to the side.
Xu Chongfeng, also startled, imdiately grabbed his younger brother.
"Zhong Shan, don’t be rash."
He had been quite angry himself, but his little brother’s roar scared all the anger right out of him.
Now he was more worried that Xu Chongshan would seriously injure Yun Hao, and the marriage would be called off.
Ever since Xu Wenwan had co ho, his daughter couldn’t sleep in her own room anymore. She slept with his wife every night, but their bed wasn’t big enough for three, forcing him to take his blanket and go sleep with his son.
Now, he was stuck sleeping with his son and his nephew.
He’d had enough of it.
At that thought, he simply lifted Xu Chongshan clean off the ground.
With his feet dangling off the ground, all the fight went out of Xu Chongshan in an instant.
The rugged man’s face flushed red with embarrassnt at being held by his older brother at his age. He growled impatiently.
"Let go! I won’t hit him."
Only then did Xu Chongfeng put him down.
As Xu Wenwan’s mother, Chen Xiumin’s expression was just as sour.
’Yun Hao was here to propose, after all. There were certain proprieties to be observed. For him to show up empty-handed wasn’t just an insult to the Xu Family’s honor; if word of this got out, the entire Xu Family would beco the laughingstock of the whole Qingshan Team.’
And yet, she couldn’t say a word about it. The more Chen Xiumin thought, the angrier she beca.
