Chen Xiumin was so furious her chest ached.
Ever since Xu Wenwan had returned, none of the family’s triumphs had anything to do with her, while she was at the center of every disgrace.
The mix-up at the hospital hadn’t been her fault; she hadn’t wanted the babies to be switched.
The daughter she’d raised before was well-mannered, obedient, and sweet. She was sensible, kind, and got along wonderfully with the rest of the family.
But when Xu Wenwan returned, she imdiately hogged a room all for herself, showing no consideration for her brother and sister-in-law.
Her previous daughter, seeing how difficult it was for her brother and his wife to take care of Xiao Ni, had offered to let the little girl sleep with her.
It wasn’t that Chen Xiumin was a harsh mother, forcing her daughter to take care of her niece.
They would just be sharing a room. Besides, Xiao Ni was older now. Not only did she not need looking after, she could even help tidy up.
But Xu Wenwan would have none of it. Without a word, she simply kicked Xiao Ni out.
On top of that, she demanded the best food, the best clothes, and the best of everything. Chen Xiumin had indulged her, telling herself it was because her daughter had only just returned.
And still, Xu Wenwan wasn’t satisfied. She just turned the whole household upside down.
Thankfully, her eldest daughter-in-law was a sensible woman.
Thinking about everything Xu Wenwan had done made Chen Xiumin miserable. She couldn’t help but think, ’If only the babies had never been switched. Our family would still be so peaceful and happy.’
But no matter how much of a disappointnt she was, Xu Wenwan was still her own flesh and blood. So when she saw Yun Hao’s attitude, Chen Xiumin was not pleased.
"This marriage proposal..."
She was just about to refuse.
Village Chief Xu exhaled a puff from his pipe. "Fine."
"Old man..."
Seeing Village Chief Xu agree, Chen Xiumin couldn’t help but protest.
But Village Chief Xu cut her off.
"Since Yun Hao ca all this way to propose and we’ve already agreed, go get Wenwan. Let the two of them et."
Chen Xiumin opened her mouth to argue, but seeing the grim, determined look on Village Chief Xu’s face, she said no more.
She went to Xu Wenwan’s room and opened the door to find her still ssing with those soap nuts.
’This daughter of hers was always so strange.’
Then she rembered what a disappointnt she was, how she’d ruined her reputation. ’Even if I don’t let her marry Yun Hao, who else would dare to marry her now?’
At that thought, Chen Xiumin’s expression soured.
"Wenwan, Yun Hao is here. Go and see him."
Xu Wenwan was busy with her new venture.
’She had it all figured out. Since she couldn’t rely on her family, she might as well focus on building her own business. Then she would rub her success in the faces of everyone who had looked down on her.’
’She’d make them open their damn eyes and see just how capable the Xu Wenwan they despised truly was.’
As she thought this, an unprecedented wave of determination washed over Xu Wenwan.
And just like that, she had finished processing a huge bag of soap nuts.
These soap nuts were dry and hard, and with no proper tools in the house, Xu Wenwan had to smash them open one by one.
It was a massive undertaking.
She was just finishing up the last of them when she heard Chen Xiumin’s voice.
Xu Wenwan looked up, confused. "What’s he doing here?"
’She’d stopped liking Yun Hao a long ti ago. She didn’t want to see him at all.’
Chen Xiumin’s face darkened. "What else could it be? He’s here to propose. Now get up, make yourself presentable, and co with ."
"Propose?"
Xu Wenwan cried out and sat bolt upright. How could she not have known anything about this?
"No. I won’t marry him."
’She had already made her plans. With her looks and her potential, she could land a rich heir or the son of a high-ranking official, at the very least.’
’Yun Hao was a good catch, sure...’
’But she was certain she could do better.’
’As for him being the male lead of the book...’
’Xu Wenwan couldn’t care less. She was the heroine of this story. Whoever the heroine chose, *he* would be the hero.’
’She firmly believed her husband was destined for greatness.’
Chen Xiumin sneered. "You won’t marry him? It’s not like he’s desperate to marry you. With a reputation like yours, you should be grateful anyone is willing to have you."
