Chapter 124 : But Her Blood Really Tastes Good

Selina said nothing more, and Eve did not ask further questions. Her gaze fell upon the heavy book in her hands, yet her fingers seed unsure where to rest.

After that entire conversation, the only thing she had truly learned was that she was a progeny—and that the one who had turned her into a Vampire must have been soone extraordinary.

Beyond that, she had gained nothing.

What had been the purpose of doing such a thing?

Eve had never known.

Perhaps… only by confronting that person face to face could she obtain the answer she wanted—for herself, and for her deceased parents.

At the sa ti, her view of Vampires had not changed completely. They were still brutal, still extre.

Selina was rely an exception.

An exception like herself.

No… perhaps she alone was the true exception.

Still, she could not help but admire this fellow Vampire. Soone capable of going half a year without touching blood was worthy of respect.

She herself certainly could not do it.

If she went half a year without eating anything, she would have lost her mind long ago.

In truth, Selina had lost her mind before. Such things were simply part of being a Vampire.

The first three days were the hardest.

On the fourth day, the body would betray you.

On the fifth day, the mind would begin making excuses.

On the sixth day, even your dreams would taste sweet.

That kind of life had lasted half a year.

Even now, Selina survived only by taking carefully asured dication every day and relying on artificial blood that was almost impossible to swallow.

At that mont, cheerful footsteps sounded in the distance, accompanied by the rustling of papers.

Annabella’s voice rang out from afar.

“Found it, found it!”

“So the old fossil finally handed over the Fla Technique!”

“…Wait, why is it only a fragnt?”

Her excited shouts echoed through the room.

Selina sighed and glanced in that direction.

“Tch. That foolish child…” Her voice carried faint wheezing breaths, as though speaking itself was sowhat difficult.

Eve could not help asking, “Does it not feel painful to live like this?”

“Of course it does,” Selina replied. “But there is no other choice. If one wishes to survive within human territory, one must live this way.”

She gently smoothed a hand across her chest.

“At first, I even considered raising a blood servant—keeping one captive and drawing blood from them regularly…”

She paused.

“But I could not do it.”

Eve looked at her and felt an unexpected resonance with those words.

“It is not because of any moral purity. Vampires do not possess such things,” Selina continued. “It is simply that doing so would remind of what I am. I do not wish to remind myself.”

After saying this, her gaze returned to Eve.

Only then did she truly notice the maid uniform Eve was wearing. Her eyebrows lifted slightly.

“Since you know Bella, that ans you belong to the Organization as well?”

When Eve nodded, Selina continued,

“My apologies. I have been retired for far too long. I only heard about you today. But this outfit you are wearing now…”

“It is rely part of a mission.”

“Oh~ I see.”

Selina curled her lips into a knowing smile. What exactly she understood was unclear, yet her eyes lingered on the maid uniform.

If not for the Collar around Eve’s neck, she might have believed the explanation completely.

Hmm. And the Hatherin Family as well.

Yes, the crest was unmistakable. A fairly prominent family, if she rembered correctly.

About forty years ago, she had once t their fourth-generation family head.

The ending had not been pleasant. At the ti, a mafia shootout had erupted, and that ambitious family head had died amidst the storm of gunfire.

In the end, all she had managed to do was preserve the man’s corpse intact.

Shaking away the mory, Selina asked,

“By the way, why have you co to see ?”

“We ca to ask for your help with a problem.”

“I see. Very well. Tell .”

Eve then spent less than half a minute explaining how she had developed an aversion to blood and how she could only accept a single person’s blood.

After hearing this, Selina revealed an expression of both curiosity and astonishnt.

“This situation is far more interesting than I expected. I have lived for so long, yet this is the first ti I have encountered sothing like this.”

“Is there a solution?” Eve asked.

“A solution…” Selina did not answer imdiately. Instead, she crossed her arms and asked,

“Are you certain you only react to that one person’s blood? Or is it simply that you have not encountered a second one yet?”

“I am not certain. I have no interest in testing it.”

“Afraid?”

“No. I simply do not want to.”

Selina smiled faintly.

“That is fair.”

She was about to continue when hurried footsteps interrupted her.

“Teacher, everything is done!”

Annabella appeared, carrying her briefcase after finishing organizing the docunts.

Without ceremony, she declared, “Your student also needs a little help. Considering our many years of teacher-student friendship, you would not refuse, would you?”

“You smooth-tongued brat,” Selina said, twisting Annabella’s ear with irritation.

“Ow! Ah—ah—ah—it hurts!”

After releasing her ear, Selina clapped her hands.

“I understand the general outline of the problem now. I cannot guarantee a perfect solution, but we can attempt it first.”

Annabella rubbed her reddened ear, her expression full of grievance. Yet she did not dare complain further and obediently handed over the briefcase.

“You ca well prepared,” Selina remarked approvingly as she looked at the blood bags inside.

She turned around and said, “Follow . Be careful not to knock anything off the tables. The equipnt here is expensive.”

As they began moving, Annabella placed down a triangular beaker she had been holding.

Then she reconsidered.

She had been punished by having her ear twisted, after all. Surely she could not simply accept that loss.

So she quietly slipped the beaker into her pocket.

Eve rolled her eyes at this automatic “loot collection” behavior. Annabella rely replied, “Save where you can, spend where you must.”

Choosing not to argue further, Eve followed Selina.

Annabella jogged forward to catch up and whispered,

“Hey, what did you talk about with my teacher?”

“Nothing.”

“What? Fine then. Do not tell ,” Annabella said, clapping her hands confidently. “But it ans there is hope! I know my teacher. When she says ‘we will try,’ it ans she is serious. She never attempts anything she is not confident about.”

How would you know if she has never attempted it?

And thus, accidents often begin exactly this way.

One human and two Vampires passed through stacks of crates until they reached a tightly shut door. Pushing it open revealed a simply furnished laboratory.

Selina placed the briefcase on an operating table against the wall and opened it, taking out a bag of blood.

“Co here,” she beckoned to Eve.

When Eve approached, Selina did not open the bag imdiately. Instead, she held it in her palm, weighing it lightly and observing the strangely swirling blood within.

“What exactly do you feel when you reject blood?” she asked.

“Nausea. The sll alone makes want to vomit.”

“All blood?”

“Probably. Except for the one exception.”

Selina nodded and did not pursue the matter further. She tore open the seal of the blood bag and poured a small amount into a prepared test tube.

Annabella leaned against the doorway, unusually quiet.

She looked at Selina’s focused profile, then at Eve’s sowhat vacant expression, and suddenly asked,

“Teacher, have you ever seen a case like this before?”

“No,” Selina replied without looking up. “But I have heard of one.”

Eve raised her eyes.

“Where did you hear about it?” Annabella asked for her.

Selina did not answer imdiately. She placed the test tube carefully into its rack, then took out another empty tube. Her movents were calm and practiced.

“A long ti ago, there was a Vampire Countess,” she said slowly. “She lived for several hundred years and never raised blood servants. She only drank the blood of enemies on the battlefield.”

“Later, during a siege, she encountered a human nun.”

Selina paused.

“After drinking the nun’s blood once, she never touched any other blood again.”

Upon hearing this, Annabella could not help muttering,

“…But I think playing a round with a nun sounds rather sacred.”
