A steep silence cracked in the rry atmosphere. A trace of unease flashed like a thin veil on everybody’s expressions. Jia didn’t understand why.
"Is everything alright?" She didn’t like this shift in the atmosphere.
Mingshen, who was deathly bored by that point, regained so of his interest in this dinner. He egged on. "Oh my. What kind of people would suddenly go so mute as if a funeral was going on? Aren’t cops such lovely people? So are quite feisty too~"
Jia didn’t appreciate his humorous sentint.
Bai Caishen smiled. "I guess people didn’t expect you to be a cop."
"Is it so shocking?"
Mingshen chuckled and whispered. "It might be for so guilty people."
Chow y narrowed her eyes in silence. Bai Caishen then took it upon himself to ease off the heaviness building up. Turn by turn, he introduced everybody to Jia and Mingshen.
"Wan Guanting, the director of the drama. Chow y, the lead heroine. She also sings really well. Dong Haoyu the lead hero aka dancer aka all rounder. He proudly does his own stunts. ng Rin, who is Chow y’s mute sister and Xin Manchu, who is secretly related to in the drama. Zeng Shan and Guo Juan are our extrely talented makeup artists. We all look so pretty thanks to them. Lastly is Ke Yufei, the cinematographer. His kicks are badass."
Guo Juan coughed. "I rember how he had kicked a drunkard out of our set during our shooting last year."
Xin Manchu laughed. "Yeah that was one vicious kick."
"Gosh that set reminds how hot it was that day!" ng Rin exclaid. "I felt as if Director Wan was plotting so revenge."
Wan Guanting joined in the rry laughter. "Who said an actor’s life is easy?"
He pulled his chair back and stood up while holding his wine glass. "Now that everybody is here, I would like to raise a toast. After five years, Whisper of the Hearts finally ends. We shot its last episode yesterday and honestly, it feels so surreal. We have grown so fond of each other, haven’t we?"
ng Rin raised her hand. "No matter what anybody says, I am everybody’s most favorite person haha."
Dong Haoyu shrugged while Xin Manchu rolled his eyes. "Yeah why not?"
Wan Guanting continued. "Of course, we couldn’t have co this far without everybody’s efforts and dedication. Five seasons, hundred episodes is a big feat."
He smiled. "A special thanks to our leads, y, Haoyu and Caishen. You acted phenonally as the leads. Guess the most heartbroken fans will be of Caishen’s is it not?" He chuckled.
ng Rin nodded hard. "Gosh I cannot believe how morally grey can so many people be! The villain literally has his own crazy fan base! People root for him despite his evil deeds."
Wan Guanting shook his finger. "You don’t understand the appeal of the evil and sinful."
Jia eyed Mingshen.
Yeah, sa here.
Mingshen caught her gaze and smiled naughtily. "What do you not understand, Spicy? Evil is appealing because evil is seductive~"
Gasps escaped from all directions and Wan Guanting praised him. "Hey, that was a good line. Ah how could I have used that in the last episode...It would have been such a banger," he lanted.
Dong Haoyu said, "One of the reasons why I wanted that role to be honest. Villains are more interesting. It’s a very different bond as opposed to a positive hero. Right, Caishen?"
Bai Caishen smiled and slowly nodded. "Yes. It was extrely challenging. To understand his thoughts, to get where he is coming from, to find joy in his vile acts and to resent the good - difficult but fulfilling...I will miss him."
Dong Haoyu nodded. "Sa here. Hero might not be my first choice, but I have grown fond of him."
Wan Guanting said, "Now without further adieu, let’s begin the dinner. I won’t torture your hungry stomachs with my boring toast anymore."
Everybody laughed and dug in.
Jia took her bowl of soup and after two bites, a curious Xin Manchu asked, "So what brought you to Tianjin, Officer Song? Is it for a case?"
"Oh, oh! Tell too!" Guo Shan leaned in with interest. "I love mysteries."
Jia replied. "Not for a case. Kind of a vacation..."
She pointed at her leg. "I got injured and so got a forced vacation from my supervisor."
ng Rin’s brow twitched. "Forced vacation isn’t a thing, okay?"
"Of course it wouldn’t be a thing for a person who likes bunking shoots," Dong Haoyu grinned.
"Heyyy!"
Wan Guanting glanced at Mingshen. "What brought Dr. Yang here?"
"Spicy," he smiled.
"Who?"
Jia’s brow twitched.
"The very cop you are talking to~"
"Woooooo."
ng Rin giggled. "I like that nickna. Sounds so badass," she then threw flirtatious gazes at Mingshen. "Dr. Yang, I was wondering if a doctor was here anyway, why don’t I get myself a checkup?"
Dong Haoyu scoffed. "You never miss a chance, do you?"
"Shut up. I want to have a capable doctor’s diagnosis hehe~"
At that point, Chow y smiled sardonically. "Yeah sure why not? Dr. Yang is the expert. He likes giving a diagnosis even when nobody asks for it."
Jia cleared her throat.
As I expected, she was offended.
Mingshen leaned back with a leisurely smile. "Patients have so bad habits and so do doctors. I am not bothered with that tone. I deserve that sarcasm for giving away my precious and extrely expensive diagnosis for free to sobody who neither can afford it nor appreciate it."
That sharp throwback imdiately toned down the rriness from the atmosphere. Everybody wondered what this invisible tension between Chow y and Mingshen ant.
Chow y chuckled, albeit with a hint of anger to it. "Why would I appreciate it if that person doesn’t understand my side of the story?"
"I already know your side of the story. Your face doesn’t look to have any prior defects. You simply poked the injections for more beauty and more perfection."
"Because beauty and perfection is what defines an actor in this industry, Dr. Yang."
"Only because you are on the stage for others," he scoffed. "Why do you have to be in the lilight for anybody else but yourself? It’s your dream to beco an actor so act for your sake. Act to please yourself. Be beautiful to make yourself happy. Fulfill your dreams for your own satisfaction. It’s already a lost battle the mont you define yourself in others’ terms."
He sneered. "You know what the problem with you is? You are not selfish at all and unfortunately too much benevolence only eats you raw."
