There are two reasons. I cannot tell the first one.
"Bai Caishen likes Ke Yufei..." she whispered. "That was his first reason."
"But then why was Bai Caishen staring at Chow y that night...-"
"I think he was staring at the cara boy’s hand, my dear Spicy," a mischievous voice echoed in her ear.
Jia took a step back, dazed. She frowned at Mingshen’s sparkling deanor. "What do you an?"
Mingshen grinned, tilting his head and pointed at Ke Yufei’s hand. Jia saw it dressed with so small band aid and she rembered that she had seen him hurt when they had entered the dining hall.
Ke Yufei was standing behind Chow y holding his cara and rubbing the back of his hand where it hurt.
Jia’s lips parted in shock.
Had Chow y injured him sohow?
She quickly went to ng Rin’s side and asked in a low voice, "How did Ke Yufei hurt his hand?"
ng Rin said, "Oh well..." she coughed. "yy was being a little an to him. I don’t know what problem she has with Yufei but she doesn’t like him. That evening, she had purposely pushed back her chair when Yufei was passing from behind her and it struck his hand."
It then clicked Jia.
Damn it!
Bai Caishen was staring at Ke Yufei’s bruised hand the whole ti and I assud that he was feeling jealous of Chow y and Dong Haoyu’s closeness. He probably guessed what happened and was actually furious at her.
Since Ke Yufei stood so close to her chair, Jia misunderstood the intent behind his gaze. She also rembered that Bai Caishen was quick to defend him when Xin Manchu was being harsh on him after Wan Guanting’s death was discovered.
"Yufei. Your room is adjacent to his, right? Did you not hear anything?"
"I didn’t really..." Yufei vacantly whispered.
"Hey, I am talking to you!"
"Manchu," Bai Caishen sternly said from behind them, "Everybody is already shocked. Don’t terrify them any further. Also, having an adjacent room doesn’t an much."
Ahhh...
Jia felt as if she was watching a drama for real. Every scene, mont and intention fell perfectly in their place.
Mingshen chuckled. "Probably why the villainous actor so frequently visited the cara boy’s room. Less of a work reason, more of a love reason."
Jia slightly craned her neck and stared at Bai Caishen once again. The gentleness and warmth was still intact as he gazed at Ke Yufei. It was unmistakable.
Bai Caishen loved Ke Yufei.
"And maybe that’s why he is salty because she didn’t end up in jail~ He has his own beef with her."
"Maybe..."
After what Chow y did to him and towards Ke Yufei, Bai Caishen might have really wished for her to go to jail and see her suffer. But she was innocent, hence free. She might not be the real culprit but that didn’t an Bai Caishen would necessarily celebrate.
The question was as to whether Ke Yufei knew about his feelings or was clueless about it?
Mingshen blocked her view and his handso face bent closer to her. His black, sparkling orbs intently stared at her with a devilish smile reaching his eyes. "You look too much invested in their story, my dear. How about you invest those thoughts and attention towards ~?"
Jia was about to retort back when her words fell midway as she realized sothing.
She peeked at Dong Haoyu, his freedom reminding her of Mingshen’s possible exploitation of the contract.
But her own complicated emotions rendered her speechless. It was the first ti that a culprit was right before her but she couldn’t show the way to jail. Not only because of Mingshen’s intervention but her own...
Jia cleared her throat as she stared at Mingshen but was unable to say anything.
Mingshen blinked at her. "For so reason, I don’t hear your zesty cobacks, Spicy. Has your database been exhausted?"
Jia threw him a glare.
Damn it!
He gave it so more thought and made a wild guess from her expressions.
"Huuuuuhhh? This is so new side I am seeing. Do you feel so guilty of abandoning your responsibility that you feel tongue tied right now?"
Her brow twitched.
It was frustrating to say the least. Though the culprit’s circumstances shouldn’t bother her as a cop because before the law, everybody was equal - she still couldn’t help but wishing sowhere in her heart for Dong Haoyu to not suffer jail. A man like Wan Guanting deserved the worst punishnt possible.
But if she let him free, she would then have to start being lenient towards the other culprits too. Everybody would demand leniency, which would simply make the justice system collapse.
She would have eventually followed her duty’s path and arrested him, but the sympathy would have eaten her from inside forever.
And since Mingshen inadvertently saved her from that burden by bringing the underworld contract into the picture, Jia felt relieved. She couldn’t arrest Dong Haoyu anymore and she could claim that she wanted to. The contract terms were beyond her control. She could give herself that justification to soothe her guilt, but...
That’s not the truth...Jia somberly thought. I equally wished for it.
It made her feel pathetic as a cop. Since she didn’t carry out her duty with all her heart and wished for sothing that was instead against the law, she felt she couldn’t really see Mingshen eye to eye.
That only made Mingshen’s grin wider.
"Seeing a tongue tied Spicy is not so bad after all~ So so! Since you already feel so guilty, why don’t you swim in the flow and beco my research subject? I think I have struck the golden chance~"
"As if I will!"
"Ah you found your voice again," he clicked his tongue in distaste. "Then how about sharing a room tonight? It’s our last night in Tianjin after all~ We should enjoy it to our heart’s content."
She grimaced. "I humbly reject your offer."
Jia turned her back on him and clutched her cane as she walked away. Her heart trembled with an unknown and uneasy emotion swirling its walls.
I have to get my act together. I won’t step out of my boundary like this from next ti...
Behind her, Mingshen caught her faint wobbly steps that gave him an insight to the turbulence rattling her.
A calculating smile stretched his lips.
"This is juuuust the beginning my dear~ You are going to be tested ti and again. I wonder what path you will choose~?"
