Chapter 75: Triggering the Rules of a Strange Tale

Chen Guan, however, acted as though nothing were amiss. He strolled in on his own and paid no attention at all to her half-undressed state.

“You take your bath. I’ll rest here for a bit.”

Luo Li’s pretty face flushed bright red. “Do you not know what it ans that n and won should keep their distance?!”

“All right, then.”

To her surprise, Chen Guan actually turned to leave without hesitation.

“If soone cos in and kills you in a mont, don’t bla for failing to protect you.”

“Ah??”

Luo Li’s heart jolted again, and her tone instantly softened.

“Th-then... all right. But you are absolutely not allowed to peek!”

“Tch. You’re just a little girl whose feathers haven’t even grown in yet.”

Chen Guan curled his lip in disdain, walked straight to her bed, dropped down onto it, then leaned back and closed his eyes.

Luo Li shot him a fierce glare. In the end, she stopped feeling shy, gritted her teeth, and went directly behind the screen. A mont later, the room was filled with the sound of splashing water.

Before long, Luo Li ca hurrying out from behind the screen with her long hair still dripping wet and asked nervously, “Brother Chen, did sothing happen outside?”

“Nothing happened.”

Chen Guan did not even open his eyes. His voice was lazy and unhurried.

Then, as if suddenly curious, he added, “By the way, what was that thing on your back just now?”

He had caught a glimpse of it by accident—a tattoo on the girl, making her look like so delinquent young miss.

“You!”

Luo Li clasped both hands tightly over her chest, her face flushing again.

And he had the nerve to say he would not peek?

Still, she did not hide it. She answered directly, “That is the totem our Luo bloodline is born with.”

“A totem?”

Chen Guan froze for a mont.

He knew that in this world, because of the strange influence of heaven and earth, so people were born with special abilities.

There were also birthmarks of certain kinds, of course, but a totem was sothing he had never heard of before.

Still, he had no mood to dwell on it now.

Chen Guan suddenly rolled upright and fixed her with an intense stare.

“Forget that for now!”

“Don’t you think sothing about the current situation is wrong?”

“Uh!”

Luo Li paused, then lowered her head and began to think.

That was right.

Before they had set out, her grandfather had clearly told her that her uncle’s side had already received word and would send an important subordinate to receive her.

But the people who had co were nothing but greed-driven scum. There had been no sign at all of any important subordinate.

Chen Guan stroked his chin thoughtfully, then suddenly said, “Do you think it’s possible... your uncle was just wiped out by that dog emperor of Great Zhou?”

“So his subordinates turned on him and decided to grab one last windfall while they still could?”

“Uh!!”

Luo Li’s body suddenly stiffened, but then she shook her head.

“Th-that’s impossible!”

“The remnants of the Violet Firmant have been lying low and preparing for over a hundred years. There may be so greedy people among them, yes, but they have always acted with extre caution. If that dog emperor had really noticed them, he would never have waited until now to make a move!”

Chen Guan nodded. He felt that made sense.

If those remnants of the forr dynasty had really endured humiliation and made preparations for a full century, then it made no sense for their nest to be uprooted so easily.

But he still found it strange.

If they had already lain hidden for a hundred years, their information network must surely stretch across all of Great Zhou. He had slaughtered those little lackeys earlier.

They should have received word long ago and sent soone to investigate.

Yet he had spread his divine sense the whole way, and within ten li there had not been a single suspicious person—not until they reached this little town, where there had still been no movent whatsoever.

The entrance to this little town?!

No... sothing was wrong...

Suddenly, Chen Guan thought of sothing. Alarm bells went off wildly in his heart, and he sprang from the bed in a single movent, making Luo Li jump.

“What is it? What is it?” Luo Li asked hurriedly.

Chen Guan did not answer at all. He simply seized her wrist and strode quickly out of the inn with her in tow.

The two of them stood just outside the inn door, on a street crowded with people coming and going.

The setting sun stretched their shadows long, yet the passersby all continued flowing around them in an endless stream, and not a single person so much as spared them a second glance.

“We must have triggered the strange-tale rules of an uncanny fiend without realizing it!”

“What?!”

Luo Li’s heart jolted.

“When did that happen? How... how did I not notice a thing?”

Looking at the townsfolk, who moved back and forth through the street with stiff, empty expressions, Luo Li felt a chill shoot from the soles of her feet straight up to the crown of her head. Even her voice trembled.

Chen Guan could not help twitching at the corner of his mouth.

Of course you didn’t know. Even I overlooked it. How could a little girl like you possibly have noticed?

He could already tell that the uncanny fiend they had encountered this ti was more than a hundred tis stronger than Do Not Look Back, the one they had t outside Wangyue City.

Otherwise, with his current realm, there was no way he could have fallen into its snare without the slightest awareness.

Of course, part of that was because this had never been his area of expertise.

In the towering mountains and deep forests of Great Yun, those were the lands of demons, fiends, uncanny beings, and dark spirits. After more than ten years of clawing and crawling his way through them, he had already built up plenty of experience in dealing with such things.

But when it ca to these unreasonable uncanny fiends, the only shallow experience he had to rely on was from those two incidents with Granny Carrying Water and Do Not Look Back.

“Heh.”

Chen Guan let out a cold laugh.

His purpose in coming to Great Zhou, beyond this escort mission, had been to properly learn about uncanny fiends.

After all, Great Zhou was rich in them. He could not very well let the opportunity pass him by.

With a thought, he opened the system panel.

[Uncanny Fiend Compendium] (Collectible)

[Note]: Collect an uncanny fiend to receive one random rule as a reward.

“Well now. A reward delivered right to my door.”

Muttering that to himself, Chen Guan closed the panel again.

“Get on your horse!”

He barked the order without wasting another word, then dragged Luo Li toward the stables beside the inn and brought out their horses.

Leaping onto his own in a single bound, he prepared to charge straight out of town.

“Brother Chen, if we just rush out like this... will we be able to escape this strange-tale rule?”

Luo Li asked anxiously while clumsily climbing onto her horse.

“Can you stop asking such stupid questions?”

Chen Guan finally snapped at her.

“The first thing we need to do right now is figure out the na of this uncanny thing. Only then can we uncover its rules and avoid the danger!”

He was certain that such a powerful uncanny fiend had not appeared here by pure chance.

And if it had not appeared by chance, then soone had definitely arranged for it to wait here for them to walk straight into the trap!

“Interesting.”

Chen Guan let out a cold snort.

“So these forr-dynasty remnants can even control uncanny fiends now?”

The two of them rode through the bustling crowds, who continued to treat them as though they did not exist, and quickly arrived at the town’s exit.

Chen Guan turned his head and looked once more at the gate tower of the town.

The place where the three characters for “Anci Town” had originally been written had now beco four bloody characters instead—Ten Thousand Deaths, No Retreat.

It looked as though they had just been written in fresh human blood.

Following his gaze, Luo Li looked up as well. The mont she saw those four dripping words, her face turned white as paper.

At once she pressed her horse a little closer to Chen Guan.

Chen Guan shot her a sidelong glance and kept staring at those four blood-soaked words.

“Could it be... this uncanny fiend’s na is ‘Ten Thousand Deaths, No Retreat’?”
