Chapter 76: This Uncanny Fiend Is Called Ten Thousand Deaths, No Retreat!

It was his first ti ever hearing such a strange na. It gave him an unsettling feeling.

“Since you had the bad luck to run into , let’s see how I deal with you today!”

“Get off the horses.”

Chen Guan swung himself down from his saddle and, together with Luo Li, tied their horses to a large tree at the entrance of the town.

Then the two of them returned to the town once more.

The sa scene as before repeated itself.

When they reentered the town, not a single person showed the slightest surprise at their return.

The street vendors on both sides rely let their eyes brush lightly over them before going right back to shouting out their wares as though the two of them did not exist.

Chen Guan tightened the reins and stopped in place, then lifted his head to look toward the setting sun on the horizon.

Luo Li followed his gaze and looked as well, asking in confusion, “Brother Chen, what are you looking at?”

“Have you not noticed? Ti... has stopped.”

“Ah!!!”

Luo Li froze. After thinking back carefully, her pretty face turned pale again.

That was right!

When they entered the town, the sun had already been setting.

Later, she bathed, then ran out of the inn again, and yet the position of the setting sun on the horizon was exactly the sa as it had been when they first arrived!

The two of them rode slowly back to the inn again, but still found nothing unusual.

They retied their horses in the stable and then walked inside.

Unexpectedly, the very mont they stepped through the door, the old innkeeper stopped them.

“Honored guests, are you here to stay the night?”

“What do you an? We already rented rooms here, didn’t we?” Luo Li could not help snapping back.

“Yes, yes, yes!” The old innkeeper seed to have received so kind of fright. He abruptly stepped back and nodded over and over again.

“That’s right, that’s right, you did rent rooms. This old man rembered wrong. I rember now!”

Seeing the look in the old innkeeper’s eyes after his lie had been exposed, Chen Guan’s brows drew tightly together. Without saying a word, he simply led Luo Li upstairs.

When they arrived at Luo Li’s room and pushed open the door, they found that aside from the bundle they had left on the bed, everything else in the room had returned to its original state.

Even the bucket of bathwater she had just used had vanished without a trace, as though it had never existed at all.

When Luo Li saw that eerie scene, she was so frightened that she could not hold out any longer. Like a sloth, she latched onto Chen Guan’s arm and hung her whole body off him.

“Hey! Do you know what it ans that n and won should keep their distance?”

Chen Guan was nearly strangled by how tightly she was clinging to him, and he could not help barking at her.

“Ah! Th-that... this is just because of the situation!”

Luo Li buried her whole face against his chest, her voice muffled and her cheeks burning hot.

“All right, all right. Let’s go back out first.” Chen Guan unceremoniously peeled her off himself.

“Oh!” Luo Li hurriedly nodded and stood properly again.

Then Chen Guan’s expression turned serious, and he warned her, “Rember this. In this damned place, do not ask random questions. If you absolutely must ask sothing, then only ask about things I can do.”

“Why?” Luo Li asked on instinct. Chen Guan’s face imdiately darkened, and his voice carried unquestionable authority. “Because if you want to walk out of here alive, you have to listen to .”

“All right!” Luo Li’s heart tightened, and she nodded heavily.

“And one more thing.” Chen Guan continued, “Do not take the initiative to strike up a conversation with anyone here.”

“Understood.” Luo Li nodded quickly.

In a place like this, even if she had a hundred tis more courage, she still would not dare casually strike up a conversation with anyone!

Then Chen Guan took her back out of the inn once more.

This ti, they did not ride. Instead, they walked side by side at a slow pace toward the town entrance.

As they walked, Chen Guan carefully observed everything around them.

His eyes were as sharp as an eagle’s, examining every steaming bamboo stear on the roadside stalls, every numb expression on the faces of the passersby nearby, and every corner that might be hiding a clue. He investigated everything with painstaking care.

Suddenly, he stopped and led Luo Li to a roadside stall.

“Boss,” he asked a middle-aged woman selling pear blossom cakes, “how much for one of these?”

“Fresh out of the stear, still hot! Three copper coins apiece!” the woman answered warmly.

Looking at those translucent cakes giving off a sweet fragrance, Luo Li instinctively started to reach out. Then, rembering sothing, she quickly withdrew her hand.

Chen Guan looked at the woman expressionlessly. “One copper coin each. Will you sell?”

“Yes! Yes!”

To Luo Li’s utter astonishnt, not only did the woman fail to get angry at such an outrageous attempt to haggle, she actually bead with delight and nodded repeatedly.

The woman quickly took out a clean sheet of oiled paper, carefully picked up one pear blossom cake, and handed it over.

Chen Guan directly took a copper coin from his robes and placed it in her hand before accepting the cake.

Luo Li was completely dumbfounded.

He... he was actually that good at haggling?

Sothing worth three copper coins had been forcibly bargained down to one, and the other party was still this happy?

Next, holding that pear blossom cake, Chen Guan led Luo Li to the next stall.

“Old sir,” he asked the elderly vendor standing beside a bamboo cage, “how much are your chickens?”

“Honored guest, these are top-quality speckled hens, thirty copper coins each. Every one of them weighs a full five jin. Pick whichever one you like!” the old man said enthusiastically.

Chen Guan directly held out the pear blossom cake in his hand. “I’ll trade you this fresh, steaming pear blossom cake for one chicken. Deal or not?”

The mont the old man saw the pear blossom cake, his eyes lit up, and every wrinkle on his face spread into a flowerlike smile. “Deal! Deal! Of course I’ll trade!”

Ugh!!!

At this point, Luo Li was completely unable to understand what Chen Guan was doing.

Was this old man a fool?

A pear blossom cake worth at most three copper coins in exchange for a live chicken worth thirty?

If he did business like this, would he not lose even the trousers off his back?

Chen Guan’s face remained utterly calm as he handed the pear blossom cake to the old man and casually reached into the bamboo cage to grab the fattest rooster.

Held in Chen Guan’s arms, the rooster kept clucking loudly, looking especially lively.

After doing all that, Chen Guan did not continue wandering around. Carrying that big rooster in his arms, he led the still-dazed Luo Li straight to the tall gate tower at the entrance of the town.

...

Once they arrived beneath the gate tower, Chen Guan raised his head again and looked at those four bloody characters above—Ten Thousand Deaths, No Retreat.

The characters were beginning to drip blood, drop by drop, like so sort of countdown.

Chen Guan stood there without moving, his gaze deep, as though he were thinking about sothing.

Troubled by the eerie atmosphere, Luo Li tugged nervously at his sleeve. “Brother Chen, is there really sothing different about these four words?”

“There’s nothing different about them.” Chen Guan shook his head.

“Then... is the thod of breaking this hidden sowhere in those four words?” Luo Li stared at them and asked tentatively.

“Mhm.” Chen Guan nodded.

Then he continued, “All right then, tell . Which word in these four has the problem?”

Luo Li studied the four characters carefully and thought about them for a mont before answering, “Ten Thousand Deaths!”

Chen Guan glanced at her. “At least those books you read weren’t for nothing.”

“That’s right. The problem lies precisely in the ‘Ten Thousand Deaths’ of Ten Thousand Deaths, No Retreat.”
