When they returned to the Ruan Family, the Ruanlin matriarch was reveling in complete victory over her dispute with Liao Zhaoji, in high spirits. She was pondering what to cook for the children’s lunch when she saw the two siblings coming back with the quails.
Ruan Hao, fearing she might misunderstand, hurriedly explained, “These are Xiaoxi’s. Nanny, could you please cook them?”
Ruanlin’s wife glanced at Xiu Xi, watching his slender figure, she quickly grasped Ruan Hao’s intention. With an acknowledgnt, she took the quails and headed to the kitchen to process them.
Ruan Hao, seeing that Xiu Xi was still standing in the courtyard, not coming in, called out, “Xiaoxi, co in for so water.”
Xiu Xi still stood in the yard, unmoving, yet his gaze continuously fell on Ruan Jiaojiao, though it was unclear what he was looking at.
Ruan Jiaojiao tried to make herself look natural, as if she hadn’t noticed those gazes, and chatted with Ruan Hao offhandedly.
Ruan Hao, seeing that Xiu Xi was unwilling to co in, didn’t force him. He cajoled Ruan Jiaojiao for a while and then went back inside to read. He was to enter high school that sumr, and he had resolved to go to university, preferably to a specific place, so he had started looking at high school books early in order to prepare for the entrance exams.
At this ti, Ruan Jiaojiao’s other brothers were playing outside. The adults who had work were working, leaving only Ruan Jiaojiao and Xiu Xi in the courtyard.
Xiu Xi didn’t speak, and Ruan Jiaojiao didn’t speak either. The atmosphere between them beca eerily quiet all at once.
Ruan Jiaojiao felt a bit awkward, picked up the big mug with flowers printed on it from the table to take a drink of water, and put it down. Then, out of courtesy, she asked Xiu Xi in the yard, “Do you want a drink?”
She thought Xiu Xi would refuse.
