Ruan Jianguo poked his head out from the storeroom, glanced at Ruan Hao outside, then turned to yell to the others, “Her brother’s back, it’s ti.” It turned out everyone was waiting for Ruan Hao; they were all ready to set off firecrackers and officially open for business once he arrived.
The storage room buzzed as the four brothers erged upon hearing the call, along with Lu Zhiwei, each of them holding signs covered in red silk and firecrackers.
The boys’ eyes lit up at the sight, their excitent bubbling over as they shouted, “Firecrackers! Ti to set off the firecrackers!”
“Are you scared?” Ruan Hao still held Ruan Jiaojiao in his arms and asked her gently, looking down.
Ruan Jiaojiao smiled beamingly and shook her head—of course she wasn’t scared on such a festive day.
She wriggled a bit in Ruan Hao’s arms, and he set her down. Everyone laughed and gathered around the doorway.
The neighboring shops peeked out to see what the fuss was about, along with so onlookers. Everyone crowded around the entrance to watch.
Ruan Jianjun and Ruan Jianmin hung the signboard from the staircase, while Lu Zhiwei stood on the other side of the door raising the firecrackers. Ruan Jianguo, with a smile, passed the match to Ruan Hao, letting him light it.
Ruan Hao took the match, walked over, and lit it; then after about ten seconds ca the crackling sound of firecrackers, blending with the screaming and clapping of the boys—it was wonderfully lively.
Ruan Jianguo walked out from the crowd with a big smile, stood in the center, and raised his voice, pointing at the restaurant behind him, “Hello everyone, I’m Ruan Jianguo; this is my restaurant. Today is our first day of business, and I hope everyone will give us your support.”
Once he finished speaking, the two brothers on the staircase pulled down the red cloth covering the signboard.
Ruan Jiaojiao looked up to see—Ruan Family Restaurant.
She couldn’t help but chuckle; the na was easy to understand, simple, yet elegant. Quite nice!
anwhile, on the other side, Ruan Jiandang also affixed the nu he’d written up earlier to the wall. This was today’s special nu, and because it was the opening day, the prices were quite low.
As so in the crowd started discussing, about a dozen people from the comrcial building across the street walked out and headed straight for the restaurant.
Ruan Jianguo thought these people looked sowhat familiar but couldn’t recall who they were at that mont until they greeted Lu Zhiwei. Then he rembered that these were all Lu Zhiwei’s friends and comrades, most of them from their town’s police station.
Ruan Jianguo clapped Lu Zhiwei on the shoulder, his emotion unmistakable.
Lu Zhiwei laughed and said, “Big boss, let’s serve the food already. Bring on whatever good dishes you have; my buddies here aren’t the type to hold back.”
“Yeah, bring us whatever special dishes you have! And another two kilos of white liquor,” a big man added with a chuckle.
“Great, great! Please co in! Have a seat, we’ll start cooking right away,” Ruan Jianguo imdiately welcod them inside. Over a dozen people arrived together; Ruan Jianguo had them sit at the biggest round table in the restaurant.
Zhao Li and Du Qing hurriedly served up cool tea.
“Sister-in-law, having the chance to drink cool tea poured by you personally, I can say that I’ve lived a full life, right?” soone remarked jovially upon seeing Zhao Li serving tea herself.
