Alexander looked at her with an expression that was neither suspicion nor acceptance, but rather a mix of both, reflecting his genuine uncertainty about how to resolve the situation. Then he moved toward the kitchen.

"I’ll make tea," he said. "Send him down."

Rex ca down four minutes later with the secondary relay analysis docunt in his hand, which was a detail Elizabeth had suggested and which he had decided to include because it was the kind of detail that made a thing convincing rather than rely plausible.

Alexander was at the kitchen table, and he looked at Rex with the straightforward attention he applied to most things.

"Early start, huh?" he said.

"The analysis doesn’t wait," Rex said.

"No," Alexander said. "I suppose it doesn’t."

He poured a second cup and pushed it toward Rex. "Elizabeth tells you’ve been here since early morning."

"The secondary relay section needed—"

"She already told ," Alexander said, not unkindly. "Sit down."

Rex sat.

Alexander looked at him with the specific evaluation he had been applying to Rex since the canyon, which was the evaluation of a man who had been defeated twice in sparring and had accepted the defeat without adjusting his fundantal position on anything.

"You’re good for the work," Alexander said. "I want to say that clearly."

"The analysis she’s described—the structure of it... it’s better than what she could have built from docuntation alone."

"The interior knowledge helps," Rex said.

"It does," Alexander said. He wrapped both hands around his cup. "You’re also excellent at being where Elizabeth needs things, which I’ve noticed and which I have decided to take at face value."

Rex said nothing.

"Because the alternative," Alexander said, "is a conversation I don’t think either of us wants to have before eight in the morning."

"Probably not," Rex said.

Alexander looked at him for one more mont, with the eyes of a man who was either very trusting or exhausted or so combination of both, and then he nodded and drank his tea.

Elizabeth ca in from the corridor, and Alexander looked up, and the look he gave her was the look from last ti, the one that was tracking sothing.

He said, "Elizabeth, co here for a second."

She crossed the kitchen. He reached out and turned the collar of her blouse slightly, just an inch, and looked at what was underneath it.

He was quiet for a mont.

"What happened to your neck?" he said.

Elizabeth looked at him with the complete composure of soone who had prepared for this question and had a specific answer. "Oh, this?"

"The secondary analysis required a diagnostic working," she said. "A contact diagnostic is needed for the energy signature mapping."

"So of the Legion’s frequencies leave surface traces when you’re running them through a biological resonance check." She paused. "It fades in a day or two."

Alexander examined the marks closely, shifting his gaze to Elizabeth and then back to them once more.

"A contact diagnostic," he repeated.

"The thodology is in Kregg’s compact docunt," Elizabeth said. "I can show you the relevant section."

Alexander looked at Rex.

Rex said, with the specific flatness of soone delivering information, "The surface trace is a known side effect of the frequency mapping."

"It’s docunted in the Apostle network’s internal protocols."

Alexander looked between them. His expression resembled that of soone receiving technically coherent information, contemplating whether to delve deeper.

He decided not to pursue the matter further, which reflected either his confidence in Elizabeth, his exhaustion, or the deliberate choice of a man who had learned that so questions could lead to answers he was not ready to face before breakfast.

"All right," he said.

Elizabeth buttoned her collar back.

Alexander drank his tea.

After a mont, he said, "I have another session with the reincarnator group today."

"The theoretical component... I could use another perspective in the room." He looked at Elizabeth. "You’ve done the orientation track before."

"I have," she said.

"And Rex," Alexander said, looking at him. "Your profile with the new reincarnators would be useful."

"Individuals who have recently arrived and established a credible position tend to respond better to that approach than to legacy instructors."

Rex looked at him. "What ti?"

"Ten," Alexander said. "Two hours, maybe three."

"It’s a smaller group this cycle, seven students, two with system designations and five knowledge-type reincarnators who ca in from the Valdric Pass."

"I’ll be there," Rex said.

Elizabeth looked at Rex across the kitchen in the way she looked at him when she was reading sothing and keeping it from her face, and Rex looked back at her with the uncomplicated expression of soone who had no particular problem with the morning as it had developed.

"Good," Alexander said. "Then we have two hours."

"I’m going to sleep for one of them."

...

The session was in one of the academy’s smaller halls, the kind used for practical instruction rather than formal lecture, where the ceiling was low enough that sound carried properly and the room felt like a working space rather than a performance space.

Seven students. Two of them had the specific quality Rex recognized from his own early days, the quality of people who had arrived sowhere new with a system already running and were still in the process of understanding what the system ant they could do.

The other five students possessed a different quality characteristic of knowledge-type reincarnators: they were less certain about their capabilities, more aware of their context, and focused on building a position based on information rather than power.

Alexander ran the session with the competence Rex had expected. He was good in front of a group, which was different from being good in a sparring match but drew on so of the sa qualities: clarity under pressure and the ability to read a room and adjust.

Rex contributed when asked and remained silent when not, which Alexander seed to interpret as appropriate rather than as withholding.

At one point Alexander said, "Rex ca to Aethelgard approximately the sa ti as this cohort."

"His experience of the positioning process is more current than mine," and looked at Rex, and Rex gave the group the version of his first months in Aethelgard that was useful for their purposes, which was accurate enough to be credible and incomplete in the ways that mattered.

The seven students listened attentively, as if receiving information they intended to use.

Elizabeth sat to the side of the room, and Rex was aware of her throughout the session in a specific way; he was aware of things he was not looking at directly.

With a critical expression, she observed the session, as if assessing the presented material. For a portion of the ti, her attention shifted to Rex. At one mont, while Alexander addressed one of the system-designation students directly, Rex glanced across the room and found that Elizabeth was already looking at him.

She looked away.

’That look... is she already horny...?’

’At this fucking situation...?’

’That’s hot.’

Rex looked back at the student Alexander was addressing.

The session ended just before noon. The seven students filtered out, and Alexander stayed to speak with two of them who had follow-up questions, and Elizabeth collected the materials from the side table.

Rex stood in the corridor outside the hall, waiting.

Four minutes later, Elizabeth erged, glancing down the corridor in both directions. She then reached out and grasped the collar of his shirt—not pulling him toward her, but simply holding it.

She looked up at him..

"Elizabeth," Rex said. "Don’t tell you’re already—"

"I understand," she replied softly, not with the composed calm she usually adopted for situations she was handling, but with the other kind.

"We’re at the Academy," Rex said. "But, eh, I’m not blaming you at all."

"I know that too," she said.

Her expression carried a distinctive quality that had erged since the middle of the previous afternoon, one devoid of managent. It was now more pronounced than it had been, revealing how much could change in just three days.

She said, close enough that it was only for him, "Please..."

"I can’t endure it anymore..." Elizabeth starts breathing hard. "My body is acting weird."

Rex looked at her.

"I don’t know how to explain it," she said. "I’ve been sitting across the room from you for two hours, and I haven’t been able to hear a single thing Alexander said for the last forty minutes, and that has never happened to before in a professional context."

She held his collar. "Never. Not once."

"Elizabeth," Rex said.

"Don’t tell it’s inappropriate here," she said. "Well... uhm... I’m aware that it’s inappropriate."

’But still... I’m telling you anyway because you can’t filter your mouth at all."

Rex looked at her for a mont, and then he looked at the corridor, which was still empty except for them. From inside the hall, Alexander’s voice was carrying through the door, still with the students.

"The archive room," Elizabeth said. "It’s located in the third corridor of the east wing and closes at noon on instructional days."

Elizabeth looked at him. "Please co fuck there..."

"Aight. Give five minutes," Rex said.

She released his collar and stepped back, smoothing her blouse with the automatic precision she always displayed. By the ti she finished, her expression had transford into one of complete professionalism—convincing enough for anyone who hadn’t witnessed her just thirty seconds earlier.

"Five minutes," she said.

She turned and walked toward the east wing.

Rex paused in the corridor for a mont. Inside the hall, Alexander spoke confidently, his voice radiating the warm competence of soone who excelled in his role, completely oblivious to the events taking place just fourteen feet away, behind a closed door.

Rex turned and followed Elizabeth.

"Second ti fucking a woman in the academy, I guess..."

"Alexander... I do hope you co so that it can make the fucking session more intense."
