The Mind-Reading Mate: Why Is the Lycan King So Obsessed With Me? Chapter 124: An Honest Murderer (1)
"No, wife!" Edmund quickly tried to calm her down before any tears could fall. "You’re not dumb at all. I made so many mistakes when I first started doing my royal duties! Two mistakes are nothing!"
[If soone as dumb as could handle royal duties, then my wife can do it even better than !]
"Really?" Primrose took a deep breath, trying to calm the storm in her mind. "So ... I’m not terrible at it?"
Edmund looked at her with certainty. "My wife is never bad in my eyes."
That was when she realized she had asked the wrong person. He was the sa man who once said she could burn down the palace, and he’d still fix it for her.
But ... sotis, that was exactly the kind of answer she needed to hear.
Even if it wasn’t the most logical or objective, his words had a way of softening her heart and easing her worries.
"Thank you," Primrose said with a warm smile. "You make feel much better now. I’ll do my best not to make any more mistakes."
Edmund hesitated for a mont before finally asking, "Does that an ... you’ll reduce my punishnt?"
"No." Primrose returned to her al, completely unfazed. "You still have to wait three more days, Your Majesty."
Edmund took a deep breath and clenched his fists so tightly that his knuckles turned white. He was clearly frustrated, but still doing his best to restrain himself. "I understand."
That evening, Edmund decided to stay busy in his study. He even skipped dinner.
The maid told Primrose that the King was busy with important matters, but she knew better. He was probably just trying to stay away from her, fighting his own thoughts and trying not to give in to temptation.
Although she was a little annoyed since he had promised to make ti for dinner with her, she also understood.
Maybe keeping so distance was best for him right now.
So she asked the maid to bring him sothing nice for dinner. Sothing warm, just in case he was stressed.
Later that night, just after Primrose had changed into her nightgown, a loud knock rattled her door, so loud it made her frown.
Who would dare disturb her at this hour?
When she opened the door, she saw Salem standing there, looking excited. Behind him, Callen was trying to stop him from knocking again.
"Why are you here this late?" Primrose glanced toward Edmund’s room, thinking he was probably still in his study or he would co out the mont he heard the loud knocking.
Still, she was certain that he must’ve heard Salem’s arrival. Knowing her husband, he had probably been about to check on her, but stopped when he realized it was Salem at the door.
"Your Majesty, I’ve finished what you asked to do a few days ago," Salem said excitedly. "I used it on soone and he died imdiately."
Within seconds, Primrose slamd the bedroom door shut to keep Edmund from hearing the conversation through the doll.
Callen stared at Salem in disbelief. "Sir Vesper, did you just admit that you killed soone?!"
"Yes, I did," Salem replied casually, as if it was no big deal. His face didn’t show even a hint of guilt.
Callen gasped, but before he could say anything else, Primrose jumped in quickly, "He killed a rat. I asked him to make rat poison because I noticed rodents wandering around the kitchen area."
"Really?" Callen let out a sigh of relief, his shoulders finally relaxing. "Though I’ve never heard any of the chefs complain. If His Majesty knew about rodents, he would’ve ordered the entire kitchen to be moved."
Primrose gritted her teeth quietly, trying to co up with an answer that sounded convincing enough.
"Not in the kitchen," she said slowly, "but near it. I just want to get rid of the rodents before they ever reach the kitchen."
Before Callen could say anything else, Primrose grabbed Salem’s arm and pulled him away.
"Don’t follow ," she said firmly. "I need to talk to Sir Vesper about sothing personal. Please don’t try to listen in. I’ll scream if anything bad happens."
Just to make sure he really wouldn’t follow, Primrose added,
"Also, you haven’t given an answer regarding the offer I gave you a week ago—no, wait, it’s probably been more than a week now."
She continued, "I expect your answer by the ti I return to my room."
After hearing that, Callen froze on the spot. All thoughts of following her disappeared.
Inside his mind, he scread, [Oh no! What should I do? I still haven’t made a decision! Why did she have to bring that up now?!]
Primrose had never forgotten about the offer, she had just deliberately chosen not to ntion it, giving Callen more ti to think.
Still, why was he taking so long?
He should be glad because the Queen had personally offered him the chance to beco one of her royal guards.
Not to ntion, the pay and benefits were generous, and turning it down would be a huge loss.
Still, it wasn’t an easy job.
It might sound simple, but once he beca the Queen’s personal guard, he would have to follow her everywhere and never leave her side.
In other words, he’d be putting his life in her hands.
So in a way, she could understand why Callen was still hesitating.
"Your Majesty, should we test the poison one more ti just to make sure it really works on your target?" Salem’s voice suddenly pulled her out of her thoughts.
Primrose sighed and stopped in the middle of the hallway, far enough from Callen that he wouldn’t hear them.
"Sir Vesper," she said calmly, "please don’t say strange things in front of others. One day, soone might actually kill you for it."
"Honey badgers aren’t easy to kill," Salem said proudly. "We’re immune to poison and great at escaping."
Primrose lifted her gaze and looked directly into his eyes. "Even so, you’re not immortal. Please think before you speak," she warned. "If you go around saying you killed soone, people won’t assu it was a rat. They’ll think you truly murdered a person."
Salem tilted his head, staring back into her golden eyes. "Who said I killed a rat?"
Primrose’s eyes widened.
He didn’t kill a rat?!
Then, who did he test the poison on?
