The Mind-Reading Mate: Why Is the Lycan King So Obsessed With Me? Chapter 36: The Poison Tester (I)
Primrose flipped through the pages of the book several tis, searching for detailed information about plants that could be used as poison.
There were countless poisonous plants, and it was incredibly difficult to pinpoint the exact type of poison that matched all the symptoms she had experienced.
Because this wasn’t just ordinary illness.
At first, her skin had simply started losing its color, growing paler by the day. But soon, other symptoms followed.
Her body felt weak, as if sothing was draining the life out of her.
No matter how much she ate, she was always exhausted, her limbs growing heavier with each passing day. Even the simplest tasks like walking down the hall, holding a teacup, beca unreasonably difficult.
Then ca the dizziness.
At first, it was subtle, a lightheaded sensation she could brush off. But as the days went by, it worsened.
Soon, standing for too long made the entire room tilt and sway, like she was trapped in a ship being tossed by the waves.
And the worst part?
She had begun feeling sharp, splintering pain in her chest, as if her heart was cracking like fragile glass.
Her heartbeat beca erratic, sotis too fast, sotis agonizingly slow.
A single strong impact such as falling, being pushed, or even sneezing too hard sent unbearable pain tearing through her chest.
And all of these horrifying symptoms had appeared in just three months.
But one of the doctors had given her a far more terrifying possibility that the poison may have been inside her for years, lying dormant in her body until sothing triggered it.
The key was ti.
If the poison had been in her for so long, then that ant one thing, It might had been there since Silas was in the palace.
Then, what about the activator?
What kind of catalyst could trigger the poison in her body?
No matter how many tis Primrose turned it over in her mind, she couldn’t shake the deep, aching feeling of betrayal, the sting of knowing that soone she had trusted the most had done this to her.
"Your Majesty," Solene’s voice suddenly broke through her thoughts. "Is sothing bothering you?"
[She’s been frowning so many tis... Could it be that Her Majesty is upset with ?]
[Maybe I shouldn’t have sat with her in the first place...]
Primrose lifted her gaze, eting Solene’s concerned expression.
The forr knight sat directly across from her, despite initially refusing to share the sa table. It had taken so insistence on Primrose’s part before Solene finally gave in and joined her for afternoon tea.
"Not really," Primrose said, hesitating for a mont.
Then, a thought struck her. Soone like Solene—a knight from a powerful lineage—might know soone useful.
"Lady Solene, do you happen to know soone who could act as my poison tester?"
Solene’s eyes widened in shock. "Poison tester?!"
Her gaze imdiately darted to the stack of books Primrose had been reading. It was only now that she realized that they were all about deadly plants.
[Why does Her Majesty need a poison tester?!]
[Is soone trying to poison her?!]
Before Solene’s thoughts could spiral further, Primrose quickly spoke up.
"In the human kingdom, it’s actually quite common to have a poison tester in the palace. They help protect the royal family from assassination attempts."
She softened her voice, letting out a sigh. "I understand that His Majesty doesn’t need a poison tester because his body is incredibly strong, but I’m only human." Primrose gave a bitter smile. "A single drop of poison could kill easily."
Solene was taken aback. Only now did she truly grasp the difference between them.
[The Queen is right. His Majesty should have arranged for a poison tester for her from the very beginning!]
[I respect His Majesty a lot, but this ti... he clearly made a mistake!]
Clearing her throat, Solene spoke up, "If you’re looking for a poison tester, I know soone who’s an expert in toxins." She hesitated for a mont before adding, "I can ask him to co here for you, Your Majesty."
Primrose’s eyes lit up with excitent, and she tapped her fan against her palm. "That’s wonderful!"
Then, as if a new thought struck her, she asked, "But ... would you be able to call him here soon? Today or tomorrow would be ideal."
Solene scratched her temple, looking uncertain. "I’m not so sure ... He’s not the type of person who likes to be rushed."
Primrose clasped her hands together and leaned forward slightly, her eyes gleaming with determination.
"Please, Lady Solene, isn’t there sothing you can do to convince him to co sooner?"
Primrose softened her voice, making it as gentle as possible. "Back ho, I used to have a poison tester. Now, I can’t even eat properly without knowing for sure that my food is safe."
[Oh my... does this an Her Majesty hasn’t been eating properly ever since she arrived here?!]
[I can’t let this go on any longer! If she can’t eat well, she’ll eventually beco sick!]
Solene straightened up. "I suppose I could try sending him an urgent letter." Then, after a brief pause, she added, "But until he arrives... how about I serve as your poison tester in the anti?"
Primrose did not look impressed.
"You?" she raised an eyebrow. "But it’s a risky job, and I don’t want you accidentally poisoning yourself because of ."
She knew that Solene had an incredibly strong body and was far more resistant to toxins than a regular human. However, Primrose still had no idea what kind of poison had been used on her before.
What if it wasn’t just deadly to humans but could also affect lycans?
Now that she knew Solene’s loyalty was genuine, Primrose wasn’t willing to risk losing such a valuable ally.
"Don’t worry, Your Majesty!" Solene rolled up her sleeve with an easy grin. "You might not know this, but when I worked as a knight, I got poisoned at least twice a year! And look at now! I’m still alive!"
Primrose frowned. Was that supposed to be an achievent?!
Soone tried to poison you, and you’re laughing about it?!
She let out a slow breath, deciding to play along.
"You were a knight?" she asked, pretending to be surprised. "That’s really impressive, Lady Solene!"
With a bright smile, she added, "Now I feel so much safer having you around!"
Then, her expression softened as she continued, "But please, don’t take on the role of my poison tester."
