Emmitt went ho and told his mother about the matter. When his mother heard the business was in Vessaria, she was relieved. She told Emmitt to let Adrian Hawthorne know that since they wouldn’t be in each other’s way, she didn’t mind sharing her business secrets.

Besides, he was just a child, so she didn’t pay him any mind. Developing photos wasn’t that simple. First, you needed a cara, not to ntion developing chemicals and photo paper. Then there was the developing technique itself. She had figured all of this out slowly on her own. ’How could a child possibly understand all that?’

"Thank you."

Adrian Hawthorne smiled and thanked him. Emmitt felt a little bad; what his mom had said was as good as saying nothing. A cara wasn’t sothing the average person could afford. He thought for a mont, then picked out a few movie stills from his bag and stuffed them into Adrian Hawthorne’s hand.

"You probably can’t afford a cara, so take these and get them developed for now. I hear they’re also showing that movie, *Painted Skin*, in Vessaria. Once you’ve made so money, you can buy a cara. You have to be quick with the shutter, or the stills won’t turn out well."

Emmitt passed on the trick of the trade. His mom had also mastered it slowly, ruining a lot of film in the process. Now she was a total pro; every shot she took was a keeper.

"Thanks. My na is Adrian Hawthorne. Let’s be friends."

Adrian Hawthorne accepted the photos, stated his na again very seriously, and extended his hand.

Emmitt was taken aback for a mont, then smiled and reached out, gripping Adrian Hawthorne’s hand firmly. At that mont, they weren’t just eleven or twelve-year-old kids, but two n forging a friendship.

Following Emmitt’s directions, Adrian Hawthorne went to a street vendor and bought film, developing chemicals, and photo paper. It was thirty percent cheaper than at the departnt store. The purchase cost Adrian Hawthorne seventy or eighty yuan, but he was confident he would earn it all back soon.

"What are you up to?" Patrick Thorne didn’t understand. He had only seen Adrian Hawthorne run out after Emmitt and co back with a dark-colored bag in his hand.

"I’ll tell you when we get back."

Adrian Hawthorne smiled mysteriously and glanced at his wrist. It was already one-thirty in the afternoon.

It was only then that everyone noticed the shiny watch on Adrian Hawthorne’s wrist, and they were all shocked.

The "three major items" of the seventies were a watch, a bicycle, and a sewing machine. Any family that could afford all three was considered quite wealthy. In the entire Millstone Peak Brigade, there were at most three or four such households, and the Thorne family accounted for two of them.

Those belonged to the brothers, Felix Thorne and Frederick Thorne, so the Thorne family was definitely well-off.

But for a child like Adrian Hawthorne to be wearing a watch was a rare sight indeed. Both Patrick Thorne and Gentry Chapman stared enviously at the glittering watch on his wrist.

"I’m going to buy so books. Why don’t you guys look around for a bit? I’ll co find you in a little while."

’He’d already read the books at ho until he knew them inside and out. He had to buy so new ones.’

"I want to buy books too," Tang Xiaonan piped up.

And so, the group trooped over to the bookstore. Wraven wasn’t very large; it only took half an hour to walk from one end to the other. The bookstore wasn’t far from the movie theater, and inside, they saw a couple of familiar faces: Clayton Xavier and Jacqueline Spann.

Clayton Xavier was engrossed in a book, but Jacqueline Spann was distracted, periodically peering outside at the sky. ’Her whole day’s plan was in shambles. She had originally wanted to ask about postcards, but nothing had gone smoothly since they set out. She hadn’t found out a thing about them, and Clayton Xavier was exactly one jiao short for the book he wanted. If she hadn’t bought that damned rice ball this morning, he would have been able to buy this book, and she could have gone to the movie theater to ask about the postcards.’

’But now Clayton Xavier was insisting on staying to finish the book, taking notes as he went. He wasn’t even halfway through, and her plans for the day were a total bust.’
