Su Ningyan scoffed, setting his chopsticks down with a soft clink before lifting his gaze to et Rong Yue’s directly.

Rong Yue was watching him patiently and expectantly. Like a predator waiting to see which way its prey would run.

Beside him, Lan ishan continued eating quietly, though his eyes flicked between them. He didn’t interrupt.

Not yet.

"I don’t think I owe you an answer," Ningyan said flatly.

Rong Yue’s lips curved faintly.

"I’m only asking to satisfy my curiosity," he replied lightly. "After all... you had every reason to slaughter them."

His claws slid out sharp, gleaming and pressed against the wooden table.

A soft scrape echoed. His blue eyes glowed.

"If I were in your position," he continued, almost thoughtfully, "I would have killed them all."

Ningyan exhaled slowly through his nose. Book Ningyan did too. Look how he ended.

"I made a promise," Ningyan said. "I told Su Qiyuan I wouldn’t harm them if Madam Qin Linhua dissolved the bounty on my head."

Rong Yue blinked once.

Then, he smiled. "Ah."

His claws dragged lazily across the table’s surface. "Admirable."

Ningyan didn’t relax.

"Why do you want the crystal?" he asked, his voice sharpening. "We didn’t part from the Celestial Beast Academy as enemies. So tell , are you really willing to kill for it?"

Rong Yue tilted his head slightly. "Power."

His gaze didn’t waver. "Authority. Ascension. It will push beyond the divine beast realm... into sothing greater. Just as Lan Yunlai intends."

Ningyan’s eyes narrowed.

So that was the difference.

Not darkness. Just ambition.

"I’m close," Rong Yue added when Ningyan studied him. "Closer than most."

Ningyan felt it then. A flicker of jealousy.

He crushed it imdiately.

"You’re not getting it," he said firmly and certainly.

Even Lan ishan paused, glancing at him in mild surprise.

"Oh?" Rong Yue’s brows lifted."Why not?"

"Because I want power too," Ningyan replied.

His voice was calm but his eyes burned. "It’s already inside . So you’ll just have to accept that."

Rong Yue’s lips quirked.

"If you try to take it from ," Ningyan added, holding his gaze, "my husband will kill you. Brutally."

Rong Yue’s claws sank deeper into the table.

The wood creaked.

But his smile only widened.

"I see..." his feline eyes glead as he nodded slowly.

Now he understood more than ever.

Why Yan Wuhen refused to let go. Why Lan ishan lingered.

Su Ningyan was... Interesting.

He was unpredictable. Soft, yet sharp. rciful... yet capable of cruelty.

And now, power clung to him like a second skin.

Rong Yue’s gaze darkened slightly.

He wanted to test that. To see how far Ningyan could be bent or if he would break first.

For a brief mont, an old mory surfaced.

That night in his chamber. Him and Wuhen together while he watched.

Rong Yue swallowed, exhaling softly as he steadied himself.

His attention shifted.

Across the table, Lan ishan was watching Ningyan. Closely. Possessively.

Then, those erald serpent eyes lifted. Locked onto Rong Yue. A silent, cold and lethal warning.

Touch him and die.

Rong Yue chuckled under his breath.

"Let’s see how this plays out," he said lightly.

Ningyan narrowed his eyes. "What do you an by that?"

Rong Yue tilted his head.

"We could make a proposal," he said. "Sothing that benefits all of—"

Ningyan’s body suddenly jerked. A sharp, violent pulse tore through his chest.

"—ah!" His voice broke into a harsh cry as his entire body lit up with an ominous purple glow.

Unstable and hungry energy flared wildly beneath his skin.

"Ningyan!"

Lan ishan moved instantly but Rong Yue’s hand snapped out.

A burst of silver energy slamd into ishan’s chest, forcing him back several steps.

The room trembled slightly from the impact.

ishan’s eyes widened then darkened.

Rong Yue didn’t even look at him.

"Do you want to die by his hands?" he said calmly. "That would be unfortunate, Lan ishan."

Now, his sharp gaze was fixed entirely on Ningyan.

The glow intensified. The crystal was reacting to sothing.

Su Ningyan forced himself to stand, his entire body trembling.

His teeth clenched hard enough to ache.

He had to get out. Now.

Before.. before he did sothing he couldn’t take back.

One step. Then another.

The purple glow around him pulsed violently, like a second heartbeat.

He reached the door and froze.

Yan Wuhen stood there.

His expression shifted instantly, surprise lting into concern.

"Yan’er..." He stepped forward.

"No—!" Ningyan staggered back, his voice cracking as another wave of pain tore through him.

His knees hit the ground. Hard.

His hand slamd against his chest as if he could hold the thing inside him down.

"It... it will pass..." he rasped. "Just..,don’t co close..."

His breathing turned uneven. Shallow. Desperate.

Across the room, Lan ishan moved imdiately.

"Don’t." Rong Yue rose to his feet, silver energy coiling around his body. "Do not interfere, Lan ishan."

ishan didn’t even look at him. He stepped forward anyway.

Rong Yue’s eyes sharpened and a blast of silver light shot forward.

This ti, ishan blocked it effortlessly. The impact rippled through the room, but he didn’t move.

"I said don’t," Rong Yue repeated, colder now.

"He’s in pain," ishan snapped, his voice low but firm. "I can help him. Stay out of it."

On the floor, Ningyan’s body curled slightly inward.

The hunger was getting louder. Closer.

The demon tools. It wanted them. All of them.

His fingers dug into his robes.

"Don’t..." he whispered weakly, though he didn’t even know who he was talking to anymore.

Wuhen moved. He crouched in front of Ningyan, his nine tails swaying calmly behind him.

"The crystal is reacting," he said softly.

Rong Yue’s gaze sharpened.

"Obviously," he replied. "The question is... To what?"

Wuhen didn’t look at him. Instead, he reached out. Two fingers lifting slightly.

Rong Yue’s ears twitched. "Hen—"

Too late.

A thin red glow flickered at Wuhen’s fingertips and sank directly into Ningyan’s forehead.

For a split second, the purple glow flared violently.

Then, it faded.

Ningyan’s body went limp instantly. Falling forward. Unconscious.

Lan ishan didn’t hesitate.

The mont Su Ningyan went limp, he was already there lifting him into his arms, holding him close, one hand firm against his back.

His gaze lifted to Yan Wuhen. "...Thank you."

Wuhen blinked, then chuckled softly, tilting his head.

"You don’t have to thank ." His eyes flicked briefly to Ningyan.

Then back to ishan. "He belongs to us... doesn’t he?"

ishan’s grip tightened just slightly.

He didn’t answer. Didn’t acknowledge it. But he didn’t deny it either.

An erald glow flared beneath his feet and the next second, he was gone.

Silence settled in the room.

Wuhen turned. His sharp gaze landed coldly on Rong Yue.

In the next instant, he moved.

The punch landed hard across Rong Yue’s face, snapping his head to the side, blood splitting across his lip.

Before Rong Yue could react, Wuhen grabbed his collar and slamd him back against the wall. Hard.

The wood cracked slightly on impact.

Wuhen leaned in, his fox eyes blazing. "Do you think I would let you hurt him?"

Rong Yue scoffed, baring his canines, even as blood slid down his chin.

"I wasn’t," he said. "I wanted to see what the crystal was reacting to."

"I don’t care." Wuhen’s grip tightened. "If it hurts him, you stop it."

His voice dropped, dangerously calm. "You don’t test him. You don’t provoke it."

He breathed heavily. "If you try to take that crystal from him, Yue’er..."

His eyes glead. "I will rip your heart out."

For a mont, Rong Yue stilled, his eyes wide with surprise.

Then, he exhaled, shoulders relaxing slightly against the wall.

"...Fine," he said. "It won’t happen again."

Wuhen held his gaze for a second longer. Then released him and turned away.

"—He’s your mate, isn’t he?"

Wuhen stopped.

Silence stretched.

He glanced back over his shoulder, tails swaying slowly behind him.

"...Yes."

Rong Yue let out a quiet chuckle, tilting his head back against the wall, completely unbothered by the blood still trailing down his chin.

"I figured," he said. "Ever since you stord my manor that night he went missing."

His eyes flicked toward Wuhen. "Back at the academy... Hen-er."

Wuhen only shrugged. He walked away, settling casually at the table as if nothing had happened, reaching for food.

Rong Yue watched him for a mont longer. Then wiped the blood from his lip with the back of his hand with a thoughtful expression on his face.
