Ningyan shook his head, frustration crossing his face.

"No, I don’t want it," he muttered, his voice heavy with exhaustion. "There has to be soone else who wants it."

Jun Haoxuan nodded. "I will keep it under my watch until you decide what to do with it. In the anti..."

His hand pressed against Ningyan’s chest.

The world shifted.

The next second, they were back in the dungeon. And standing at the entrance was Yan Wuhen.

His expression was dull at first. Then his eyes t Ningyan’s and everything lit up.

"Yan’er." He moved imdiately, closing the distance in seconds before wrapping arms around Ningyan, possessively. Only then did his sharply gaze slide toward Haoxuan.

"So you’re the one who killed them."

Jun Haoxuan didn’t look impressed. "What are you doing here?"

"He ca with ," Ningyan said quickly.

Haoxuan’s eyes shifted between them. He was observing...

"The spirit mate chain is gone," he said slowly. "Yet you remain together. Why is that?"

Ningyan opened his mouth but Wuhen spoke first.

"I’m earning his affection." His arms tightened around Ningyan. "By being a good fox."

Then he tilted his head, looking directly at Ningyan, his eyes gleaming with that familiar hunger.

"Am I being a good fox, Yan’er?"

Ningyan’s face heated instantly. "What kind of question is that?!"

He shoved Wuhen’s face away. Hard.

Wuhen didn’t even resist. He just laughed softly.

Haoxuan was watching quietly. But his golden gaze had sharpened. "So that is how it is."

Ningyan paused. Sothing about that tone...

"...What do you an?" he asked cautiously.

Haoxuan didn’t answer. His eyes lingered on where Wuhen’s arm was still loosely around Ningyan’s waist.

Ningyan imdiately straightened, stepping slightly away from Wuhen. And cleared his throat.

"...Anyway." He looked back at Haoxuan. "Thank you."

The words ca out awkward. But sincere.

Behind him, Wuhen leaned in again, unbothered and smiling. Ningyan’s back pressed against his chest.

Jun Haoxuan looked at him, genuinely surprised. "...Why are you thanking ?"

Ningyan shrugged. His gaze drifted along the cold dungeon walls.

"For killing them. I don’t feel bad about it." He pushed himself away from Wuhen. "I don’t care either. I just ca here to find out if you were going to co after , too."

His fingers brushed lightly against the stone wall as he walked past it. "They tortured . Scarred ."

His voice dipped slightly.... quieter. "...Defiled ."

Silence followed. Then he exhaled. "I would’ve killed them myself."

A small smile tugged at his lips. "But..."

He glanced back over his shoulder, his eyes bright. "I’m a beast of my word."

And then, he winked.

Before Haoxuan could respond, Ningyan had already turned away. He walked out of the dungeon, his steps echoing lightly as he ascended the stairs. And then, he started humming like none of it mattered.

Eventually, he stepped into the main halls again. His eyes scanned the surroundings searching. Until, "Finally."

He stopped in front of the library doors, a small grin spreading across his face. He pushed them open.

The space inside was vast. Quiet. Untouched. The accent of white gold and red which represented the phoenixes.

Ningyan stepped in slowly, his gaze softening just a bit. At least this... hadn’t been taken.

He moved quickly after that. Climbing. Reaching. Pulling down scrolls and books, checking titles, skimming pages. But always, putting them back exactly where they belonged like he respected this place.

Behind him, footsteps.

Yan Wuhen and Jun Haoxuan entered the library. Their eyes followed Ningyan as he moved between shelves, light on his feet, focused and alive.

Neither of them spoke.

Ningyan was starting to get frustrated. This place was too big. Too many shelves. Too many scrolls. Too many useless things.

"Ugh—" He swung himself off one of the taller shelves, landing lightly. Then threw his head back, exhaling. "Do you two think everything about my kind has been destroyed?"

His voice carried across the quiet library.

Yan Wuhen’s eyes were bright and locked on him like he might actually pounce if given the chance. Jun Haoxuan was more focused and interested.

Ningyan blinked. A thought flickered. Didn’t I ask him once if he was interested in ? ...Did he ever answer?

Wait. What am I even thinking about? What happened to living quietly in the mountains... with ishan... just ishan?

Ningyan pressed his lips together. That plan had already been ruined the mont Wuhen walked back into his life.

He dropped from the shelf completely this ti. What happened to not being greedy?

Haoxuan moved. He walked past Ningyan, his gaze trailing along the shelves as if he already had an idea. "If you intend to stay and search the library—"

"No, no." Ningyan cut him off imdiately, shaking his head. "I don’t want to stay here."

A frustrated sigh. "I just need sothing... anything.. about my kind. History. Cultivation. Records. Anything useful."

Haoxuan halted. Then looked at him properly. Longer this ti. Before turning and continuing forward.

Ningyan frowned. "...Where are you going?"

He followed. And just like that, Wuhen appeared at his side clinging to his arm.

Ningyan didn’t even push him away or stiffen. He just kept walking.

They reached the far end of the library. A quieter section with tables, cushions and older scrolls. Different from the rest.

Wuhen finally let go. And Ningyan didn’t waste a second. He rushed forward, dropping onto the cushion, pulling scroll after scroll, flipping them open, skimming, discarding and grabbing the next.

Haoxuan joined him soon after. He didn’t rush. Didn’t waste movent. But every scroll he picked, he checked properly.

Behind them, Wuhen lingered. His tails swaying slowly, his eyes moving between them.

In no ti, hours seed to have passed, and Ningyan groaned in frustration, thumping the book against his head. "Why can’t we find anything?"

Jun Haoxuan let out a heavy sigh, running a hand over the shelves before letting it wander around. "There must be a restricted section," he muttered.

Wuhen, who had been lingering quietly, perked his ears and walked to a wall. He pressed his hands against it, and a fiery red-gold glow spread across the surface. A wide smile flashed across his face, revealing sharp canines. "Found it,"

"Impressive," Jun Haoxuan admitted, his eyes widening a bit.

anwhile, Ningyan didn’t wait. He raced forward and passed through what appeared to be a solid wall only to find it was an illusion.

On the other side, the library opened into a smaller section, with fewer shelves, but the books and scrolls there made his heart leap. He picked up a volu and gasped. The page revealed a perfect, detailed drawing of a phoenix. Without hesitation, he hugged the book to his chest.

"I found it!" he exclaid, turning to Wuhen and Haoxuan, who flanked him.

They watched him with varying expressions of interest, but Ningyan barely noticed. His excitent over discovering the books about phoenixes consud him completely.
