She opened her mouth.
He found the specific point at the base of her neck where the muscle had been holding six years of compound managent, and he pressed.
"—Hn." The sound arrived without her permission.
She straightened.
He continued the pressure.
She had excellent posture. She had always had excellent posture. The Chief’s bearing — this was sothing she had maintained with the specific, absolute consistency of a woman who understood that how she occupied space communicated authority before she said a word.
The posture was doing its best.
Under his hand, it was losing the argunt at a cellular level.
"Stop," she said.
"You’re crying," he said. "You’re stressed. I’m helping."
"You’re—" She stopped. "This isn’t—"
"Appropriate," he said, finishing her sentence. "No. Probably not."
He did not stop.
She did not move away.
The specific, arrested quality of a woman who was fully aware that she should move away and whose body had found the warmth from his hand at her back and his thumb at her trapezius and the Herb Integration passive and had decided, without consulting the Chief, that it was not moving anywhere.
His other hand ca up.
From the front. The specific, flat, warm press of his second palm against her collarbone — not gripping, not the possessive hold, the specific, framing contact of soone enclosing a space, one hand at her back and one at her front, her body held between both of them.
She looked down at the hand at her front.
"Senior—"
"When did you last let soone take care of you," he said.
She had no answer.
He pulled her back.
Not dramatically — the specific, gentle, backward guide of a woman into the space in front of his chest, the flat contact of his chest against her back, his arms coming around her from both sides in the specific, comprehensive, gathering embrace of soone who had decided she was going where he was and had made the commitnt to the geotry.
She tensed.
"Let go," he said.
"I am not—"
"Of your shoulders," he said. "They’re at your ears."
She looked down at her own shoulders.
They were, in fact, nearly at her ears.
She let them drop.
The specific, full-body exhale of a woman who had been holding a posture for six years of compound managent and two and a half hours of crisis and had just released the hold.
His arms were around her.
She was against his chest.
He slled like cedar and sothing else — sothing that was not a perfu and was not a cultivation compound that she could identify, but that was warm and specific and present and did the thing that certain slls did to a nervous system that had been in extended crisis, which was to tell it, very quietly and without drama, that it was safe to stand down.
His mouth ca to her neck.
Not kissing. The flat, warm press of lips against the place where the neck t the shoulder, the specific, close-contact warmth of breath.
She moved forward.
The instinctive, imdiate pull-away reflex of a woman who understood exactly what the mouth on the neck ant and for whom it did not an safe to stand down.
"Senior—" Her voice had dropped a register without her permission.
"I know," he said.
"This is wrong," she said.
"I know that too."
His mouth moved.
Not the neck this ti — the jaw, the corner. The specific, warm, slow approach of soone who was in no hurry and who understood that pace was its own argunt.
"I have a husband," she said.
He was quiet for a mont.
"Your husband," he said, against her jaw, "is currently occupying a room sowhere in your compound."
The image arrived.
The Cortisol was still running.
The image at forty ters, the hand extending, the robe coming off, the woman’s voice saying please don’t, it’s wrong—
Her jaw set.
He felt it.
"I hate you," she said. Low.
"I know," he said.
"You co here and you—" Her voice. "You say these things and you—"
"I know."
"—and now you’re—"
"I know."
"—and I am a Chief and I am married and I have never—"
"I know all of this," he said.
He kissed her.
The jaw first. The corner of her mouth. The specific, slow, building approach that he had used on Sora in the cedar room — not the managent-of-protest kiss, not yet, the deliberate, asured kiss of soone who was giving her a destination and was showing her the route.
She pulled back.
The full, backward pull of a woman who had a point she was determined to make.
His hand ca to her jaw.
Not gripping. The flat, cupping hold that turned her face back toward his.
"If you are not calm," he said, with the flat, completely unhurried tone of soone stating operational paraters, "I won’t be able to help you."
She stared at him.
"I am—"
"You’re not."
"I am perfectly—"
"You’ve been crying for six minutes. Your hands are still shaking. Your qi is running the crisis pattern." He looked at her with the flat, assessor’s eyes. "You are not calm. And I need you calm before I can give you what you need."
"What I need," she said.
"Is for soone to take care of you," he said. "For once."
Her jaw was tight.
The argunt was right there. The full, logical, counterargunt of a woman who was a cultivator and a chief and an adult and knew exactly what this was.
She opened her mouth.
He kissed her.
The full kiss this ti. Not the jaw, not the corner — the full, complete, front-contact kiss of soone who had run out of patience for the approach and had arrived at the destination directly.
Her hands ca up.
The instinctive push. Palms against his chest. The Chief’s body language: stop, back up, this is not happening.
He took her hands.
One in each of his. The specific, gentle, patient removal of the hands from the pushing position, held now at her sides, not restrained — he was not restraining her — just held, warmly, present.
He kissed her.
She made a sound against his mouth.
The Cortisol and the warmth and the six minutes of crying and eight hours of compound sounds coming from the cedar structure and the specific, accumulated weight of a woman who had run two hundred and thirty-four people for six years without putting herself anywhere on the list and his hands holding hers and his chest against her back and the specific, comprehensive, non-negotiable warmth of it all.
She made a sound.
It had every shape of protest in it.
It also had the specific, honest warmth of sothing that was not only protest.
He separated by half an inch.
"If I am not calm," she said against his mouth, "you will not help ."
"Correct."
"This is extortion."
The grass was soft. The Void Return bloodline territory kept the ground as it kept everything — maintained at a baseline that was above what the season would otherwise produce, the grass thick and warm and present.
She looked up at the stars.
He was above her.
The towel. The specific, single remaining architectural elent between the situation’s current state and its logical next state.
He was above her with the flat, calm, completely un-theatrical expression of soone who had a process and was in it.
