The light peaked.

The flat, single, enormous, sky-going, complete, full-extension peak of the yin light — the specific, maximum, this-is-the-event-completing, everything-at-once peak of an ancient-grade yin flower’s full transfer completing in a Yin Devouring Body that had been ghost-state for however long and was now finishing the restoration.

Then it settled.

The flat, post-peak, warm, soft, present, completed quality of light that had peaked and was now at the settled, warm, done-now ambient of a cultivation event that had finished and was sitting in the air.

The pavilion door.

Movent.

The flat, present, single-figure, walking-toward-the-door movent of soone who had been inside and was coming out.

She ca out.

The daughter.

Not the ghost.

The flat, present, fully-material, fully-here, completely-solid, entirely-alive young woman who stepped from the pavilion doorway into the courtyard’s morning light — the specific, alive-quality, warm-skin, real-hair, actually-present reality of soone who had been translucent and was now not.

Brown eyes.

Warm brown, the sa warm quality that the Eye of Truth had read when the yin condensation was still modifying it but was now at its actual, full, present color.

Young.

Seventeen. Eighteen. The flat, specific, late-teenage, well-structured, yin-physique face of a girl who was — now that the ghost-modification was fully resolved — genuinely pretty in the specific, natural, has-good-bones-and-didn’t-need-anything-else way.

Her hair: dark, full, present, the specific, heavy, real-hair quality of hair that had stopped being yin-condensate pale and had returned to its living color.

She was wearing the ruins of what she had been wearing when the sect was destroyed.

She looked at him.

She opened her mouth.

"Master—" she said.

He looked at her.

He was about to say sothing.

He did not say it.

Because she had stopped.

Her brown eyes — the flat, wide, specific, completely-occupied, everything-else-forgotten quality of brown eyes that had found sothing they were not prepared to find — had moved from him.

To the woman beside him.

To the woman who was standing in the courtyard in the ruins of his sky-blue robe and had her hands at her mouth and was looking at the girl coming out of the pavilion door with the specific, full-present, everything-in-the-eyes quality of amber eyes that had received ’alive’ from him thirty minutes ago and were now receiving the proof.

The daughter looked at her mother.

The mother looked at her daughter.

"M-Mother...?!"

"M-Mother—?!"

The word broke in the middle of it.

The specific, vowel-fracturing, can’t-hold-the-full-word quality of a word produced by a throat that had closed before the word could complete — the daughter’s voice at the pavilion door doing the specific, everything-stopping, world-narrowing thing a voice did when the eyes received information the brain had classified as impossible and was reclassifying in real ti.

The mother.

She was already moving.

She had been moving since the word started.

The flat, forward, everything-else-gone, no-interval-between-receiving-the-visual-and-moving run of a woman crossing the courtyard at the full, no-reservations, nothing-managed, arms-already-opening pace of a mother who had been told her daughter was dead this morning and was looking at her daughter standing in a doorway.

The daughter ca off the pavilion step.

Her feet hit the courtyard stone.

She ran.

They t at the courtyard’s center with the flat, full-weight, both-bodies, complete-contact collision of two people who had not planned the geotry and had not needed to — her daughter’s arms around her, her own arms around her daughter, the specific, holding-as-tight-as-possible, nothing-held-back, not-performing-it hold of two won who had believed the other was gone and were now standing in a courtyard proving each other wrong.

She was crying.

The mother was crying with the specific, shoulder-heaving, not-stopping, completely-honest crying of a woman who had been managing it since before the square and had not been able to stop managing it because the situation had not given her the space and was now in a space where the managent had no more function.

Her daughter was crying into her shoulder.

The flat, face-pressed-into-the-mother’s-shoulder, hands-at-the-mother’s-back, completely-occupied-with-this crying of a girl who had been ghost-state and alone in a ruined sect for long enough that the reunion was arriving at the full, accumulated, everything-at-once weight of every day it had been accumulating.

"Mother," the daughter said, into her shoulder. The flat, muffled, shoulder-pressed quality of the word. "I am sorry."

The mother held her tighter.

"I am so sorry." Her daughter’s voice, cracking. The specific, word-by-word, each-word-costs-sothing quality of speech produced through full crying. "I thought the sect would protect . I thought Master could handle it. I was so weak — if I had been stronger they would never have co for and Master would still be alive and the sect would not be—"

"Stop," her mother said.

The flat, one-word, imdiate, no-more-of-that delivery. Her hand at the back of her daughter’s head — the flat, full-palm, hair-covered, present hold of a mother’s hand at the back of her child’s head.

"You are alive," the mother said.

Her voice was doing the specific, trying-to-stay-above-the-crying-to-say-the-sentence quality of a voice that had sothing it needed to say and was managing the crying enough to say it.

"You are alive," she said again. The flat, present, this-is-the-only-thing-that-matters delivery of a mother who had filed all the other categories under ’later’ and was only running one category right now.

The daughter wailed.

The flat, full, high, completely-honest wail of a girl who had been holding sothing for long enough that the holding had beco her structure and had just had the structure removed by soone saying ’you are alive’ in the specific, flat, this-is-all-that-matters voice that only mothers used.

She held her.

He stood at the courtyard’s edge.

He watched with the flat, present, assessor’s watch of soone who was not in this and was not pretending to be in this and was noting it with the specific, three-thousand-year, I-have-seen-this-before-but-I-am-noting-this-specific-instance quality of soone who filed things.

He noted: the daughter was fully restored. The Yin Devouring Body at Foundation Establishnt Early, running clean, the ghost-state completely resolved.

He noted: the mother was — the flat, warm, near-manifestation yin lineage active and running, the dual cultivation transfer from the forest still warm in her ridians in the flat, present, ongoing quality of sothing that did not resolve in hours.

He noted: the mother had forgotten.

The specific, everything-else-gone, daughter-is-alive, nothing-else-has-any-weight quality of a woman who had thirty minutes ago been receiving the full, present, forest floor event and was now holding her daughter and was not currently filing any report about the forest floor.

He noted: this was expected.

He looked at the sky.

He looked at the realm seed in his hand.

He waited.

’’’

The daughter pulled back first.

The flat, slow, reluctant, I-don’t-want-to-but-I-need-to-look-at-you pull of soone separating from a hold because they needed to see the face they were holding.

She looked at her mother.

At the amber eyes, wet, red-rimd, present.

At the dark hair, loose, forest-disheveled, damp at the temples.

At her mother’s face, which was — the flat, everything-went-through-this-face-today quality of a face that had had a comprehensive morning.

She looked lower.

The daughter’s brown eyes moving from her mother’s face.

To her neck.

To her shoulders.

To the specific, warm-brown-skin, present, not-hidden evidence of what the morning had left on her mother’s body — the wrist grip-marks from the slave traders, the forest floor’s contributions, and the specific, present, unmistakable, bite-shaped mark at her right breast where his teeth had been.

The daughter’s eyes stopped.
