The air went still the mont she stepped through the portal. Lucifer's entire body locked up, his focus shattering. His eyes, cold and calculating seconds before, now held a storm of pure, undiluted shock.

Remu.

She stood beside Daniel, her arms crossed, looking like she'd just returned from a walk, not from the dead. Her gaze swept over the ruined battlefield, the horde of monsters, and the stunned faces of her forr allies, with an expression that was trying too hard to be bored.

The reaction from the group was a wave of silent paralysis.

Ella made a small, choked sound. Her rifle, which had been steady against her shoulder, dipped towards the ground. Ken's growl died in his throat, his aggressive stance faltering into pure confusion. Angel's eyes widened, her flas flickering out. Mob simply stared, his usual stoicism broken by a faint, uneasy shift of his wings.

Remu's eyes, after a slow sweep, landed on Dera. A tight, forced smirk tugged at her lips. "You," she said, her voice a little rough. "The one with the good aim. You shot ."

Dera's hand flew to the hilt of her knife, her knuckles white.

Ken was moving before anyone could blink, placing his bulk squarely between Dera and Remu, a low, protective rumble echoing in his chest.

Remu's smirk didn't reach her eyes. She held up her hands, a gesture that was ant to be casual but looked stiff. "Relax. I'm not here for a fight. Not… not with her. Not right now."

Her words lacked their old, sharp-edged confidence. They sounded rehearsed.

"Daniel," Lucifer's voice was dangerously quiet, cutting through the tension like a blade. He wasn't looking at Remu. He was glaring at the demon, who was trying and failing to look innocent. "Explain. Now."

Daniel shrugged, a little too casually. "Look, can we do this later? We're kinda in the middle of sothing." He gestured with his thumb at the horde of Hollows, who were starting to creep forward again, their hisses filling the silence.

Ruka, the cambion, stepped up, his practical nature overriding the shock. "He has a point. This can wait. They won't." He glanced at Lucifer, his expression firm. "Priorities."

Lucifer's jaw was so tight it looked like it might crack. He held Daniel's gaze for a long, tense second, a promise of a later reckoning clear in his eyes. Finally, he gave a sharp, jerky nod.

"Fine."

The mont broke. The Hollows surged.

Daniel was the first to move, a whirlwind of wicked glee as he tore into the nearest creatures. Ruka was right beside him, his own attacks less flashy but brutally efficient.

Lucifer turned back to the fight, but his movents were different now. They were sharper, angrier. His shadows lashed out with a new, vicious intensity, but his attention was split.

Ella finally snapped out of her daze, lifting her rifle and firing, but her shots were wild, her breathing uneven. She couldn't stop looking at Remu.

Remu, for her part, didn't join the fight imdiately. She just watched, that sa strained neutrality on her face. When a group of Hollows tried to flank Ken and Dera, she finally moved. A flick of her wrist sent a pulse of violet energy that blew the creatures apart. It was clean, powerful, and utterly controlled.

Everyone stared again.

"I said I wasn't here to fight you," she said, her voice low. She wouldn't et anyone's eyes.

"Why should we believe you?" Ken snarled, not moving from his protective stance.

"You don't have to," Remu replied, her gaze fixed on the ground near her feet. "Just… just don't get yourselves killed."

Lucifer's shadow tendril slamd into the earth near her, making her flinch. "We don't need your help," he said, his voice cold.

She finally looked at him, and for a split second, the tough mask slipped. There was a flash of sothing pained, sothing regretful in her eyes. It was gone in an instant, replaced by a defensive glare. "I wasn't offering."

The battle raged around them, a chaotic backdrop to the personal standoff. Ella fired another shot, this one hitting its mark, but her hands were trembling.

Remu's eyes flicked to her. "You're still here," she said, and the words ca out softer than she probably intended, almost wondering.

Ella flinched as if struck. "Where else would I be?" she whispered, her voice thick.

Remu looked away, her jaw clenching. She didn't have an answer.

Daniel laughed as he vaporized a larger Hollow. "You guys are worse than the monsters! Less talking, more stabbing!"

Ruka grunted in agreent, parrying a clawed strike. "Focus!"

The fight continued, but it was fractured. The trust was gone, replaced by a wary, painful tension. Lucifer fought with a cold fury, his movents efficient but his mind clearly elsewhere. Every ti Remu used her magic to help, his scowl deepened.

During a brief lull, as the last of the imdiate wave fell, the silence returned, heavier than before.

Ken finally turned to face Remu fully, his arms crossed. "So. You're back. What's the play?"

Remu hugged herself, a defensive gesture that was entirely new. "There's no play."

"Bull," Angel spat, wiping black blood from her cheek. "You don't just show up after… after everything."

Remu's shoulders slumped slightly. She looked tired. "I know."

The simple admission stunned everyone into silence. This wasn't the Remu they rembered. That Remu was all sharp edges and defiant pride. This one looked… hollow.

"Daniel found ," she continued, her voice barely above a murmur. "In the… in the between places. Pulled out." She glanced at the demon, who just winked. "I… I had a lot of ti to think. To see things." She finally risked a look at Ella, then at Lucifer. "I saw the things I did. The choices I made."

Her voice broke on the last word. She cleared her throat, trying to regain her composure. "They were wrong. I was… I was wrong."

Ella was crying now, silent tears cutting tracks through the gri on her face. She didn't say a word.

Lucifer watched Remu, his expression unreadable, but the cold anger in his eyes had lessened, replaced by a deep, weary caution.

"Why co back now?" he asked, his tone flat.

"Because this is where it ends, isn't it?" Remu said, gesturing vaguely at the ruined world around them. "All of it. The ss I helped make. I can't… I can't just hide from it anymore."

Daniel sauntered over, slinging an arm around her shoulders. She stiffened but didn't push him away. "She's got a guilty conscience! Isn't it touching?" he said, his voice dripping with mischievous mockery.

Ruka frowned. "It's a start. But trust is earned."

Before anyone could say another word, the ground began to tremble. Not from the clumsy charge of the Hollows, but with a deep, rhythmic thumping, like the footsteps of a giant.

The crimson portals in the sky, which had been shrinking, suddenly flared brighter than ever. The air grew thick and hard to breathe, charged with a malevolent energy that dwarfed anything the Hollows had possessed.

From the largest portal, a shape began to erge. It was not a mindless beast. It was a figure, clad in jagged, black armor that seed to drink the light, a crown of twisted horns curling from its helt. It held a massive, cruel-looking spear that crackled with the sa red energy as the portals.

It hadn't fully entered their world yet, but its presence was already a weight on their souls, a pressure that promised utter annihilation.

The Hollows, all of them, stopped moving. They fell to their knees, bowing their heads toward the erging figure.

Daniel's smirk vanished completely. "Okay," he said, his voice uncharacteristically grim. "That's not good."

Ruka's hands tightened on his weapon. "What is that?"
