Behind her, she heard Nara’s breathing change — the specific, slight change of soone who had just witnessed sothing and had identified what they felt about it and had decided not to share that identification.

Preet walked faster.

The sound arrived first.

The specific, low, continuous sound of moving water — not the ocean, which was always present sowhere behind everything on this island. A different water. Fresh. Moving. The specific, clean sound of sothing falling.

"’Is that—’" Gia said.

Then the trees opened.

The clearing was — not large. Not dramatic. The specific, intimate size of a space that the forest had made for itself, the canopy pulling back to let the sky in, the light coming down clean and direct in the gap.

And in the gap: the waterfall.

Not tall. Twenty feet, maybe. But dense — the full, white, committed fall of water that had sowhere to co from and was using it, hitting the dark pool below with the specific, continuous impact that made the air around it cool and misty, the specific, imdiate drop in temperature felt on the face and forearms.

Clean water.

They all slled it before they understood it. The specific, honest sll of fresh water — no salt, no heat, no fish or fire or human occupation. Just water, and the stone it ran over, and the specific clean of a source.

"’How,’" Celia said. Not a full sentence. The truncated version of several questions.

"’Island topography,’" he said. The specific, deflecting brevity of soone answering a question with information that answers the surface layer and nothing below it.

He had been here before them. He had been here before any of them knew this island existed, she suspected, and he had prepared things. But the thought didn’t develop into a sentence because ijin was already at the pool’s edge, crouching, and the water was already at her hands.

"’Wait—’" Celia.

"’Is it—’" Aisha.

"’Drinking water?’" Preet finished.

He was looking at the waterfall. The specific, patient look of soone who has prepared a thing and is waiting for the people it was prepared for to arrive at the conclusion themselves.

"’Try it,’" he said.

ijin looked at it. The clarity of it — she could see the pool floor through it, the specific, perfectly articulated visibility of water that was doing nothing it shouldn’t. She looked at him. He looked at her.

She drank.

One palm full. Then two. The specific, imdiate expression of a body that has been on salt water and coconut water for days and has just received sothing different.

"’It’s clean,’" she said.

They descended on it.

The specific, collective loss of composure of five dehydrated won encountering fresh water — dignity becoming briefly irrelevant, hands and mouths and the specific, genuine, animal need of bodies that had been calculating their consumption for days.

He stood back.

Watching.

His arms at his sides. The specific, patient quality of soone who has provided sothing and is watching the effect of it, and is — not proud, exactly. Sothing quieter than proud. The specific satisfaction of soone whose planning has t its target.

’Magic,’ Celia thought, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand. ’He made this. This doesn’t just exist. He made it before we got here, cleaned it before we got here, prepared it because he knew we’d need it.’

She looked at him.

He was looking at the water.

"’Thank you,’" she said.

The words ca out before she’d decided on them. The specific, involuntary gratitude of a body that has received a thing it needed and hasn’t filtered it through the rational layer first.

He looked at her.

"’Don’t ntion it,’" he said.

She looked away.

The night ca gradually.

Not dramatically — not the cinematic shift from day to dark, but the specific, slow process of the tropical evening, the light going golden and then amber and then the first gray, the temperature dropping in incrents, the sounds of the forest changing their composition as one shift of creatures handed off to the next.

They had built a fire at the clearing edge.

Or rather: he had built a fire, and the group had organized itself around it in the specific, now-practiced arrangent of people who had been doing this for several days and had established positions. The flat rocks near the waterfall serving as seats. The fish he’d caught that afternoon — three of them, already cleaned, the specific, practiced speed of his knife through the spine sothing Preet was trying not to think about — laid over the fire on the green wood rack he’d constructed in approximately four minutes.

The light was good here.

The fire and the waterfall and the last of the daylight creating sothing that, if you weren’t tracking the specifics of the situation, would have looked peaceful.

Gia was tracking the specifics.

She had been tracking them for the last two hours. In the specific, thodical way of soone who had assembled data — the two-minute boyfriend, the forest undergrowth, what Preet had said on the path (’stopped having opinions about it’), Nara’s careful walk and the leaf in her hair, the way he’d said ’I like experienced ones’ — and had arrived at a position and was now in the process of moving toward it.

She crossed the clearing.

He was at the tree line, breaking wood.

Not the normal breaking. The specific, terrible ease of him — his hands at both ends of a trunk that was wider than her thigh, a short pause, then the sound. The CRACK of it. The split. Two pieces. Dropped to the stack.

He did it again.

She stopped. Watched. The specific, involuntary arrest of motion produced by watching sothing that the body knows is not normal and cannot process at walking speed.

He picked up another trunk.

She walked toward him.

"’Hello,’" she said.

He turned.

The specific look of soone who had known she was there for a while and had been waiting for the hello.

She had — she had arranged herself. She was aware of this. The specific, deliberate arrangent of a woman who has decided to deploy sothing and has prepared the deploynt. Her blouse — the remaining buttons open to the specific depth she’d calculated. Her arms, at her sides, then crossed below her chest, not covering but lifting. The specific, casual presentation of soone who was not doing what she was doing.

She looked at him.

Her boobs, in the firelight from across the clearing, pressed against each other in the specific cleavage geotry of arms-crossed-below. She knew what this looked like. She had rehearsed nothing but she knew what this looked like.

He looked at her.

"’Are you free?’" she said.

"’More or less,’" he said. "’Why?’"

"’I thought I should help you a bit,’" she said.

"’Help .’"

"’Yes.’"
