The guards had cleared the table with the sa quiet efficiency they’d produced it.

Vikram had excused himself to a call — not work, his mother, the specific call he apparently received at 8pm regardless of circumstances and had never successfully redirected.

era was watching the Ferris wheel with the specific, watching-sothing-you-can’t-do expression.

Priya’s head was beginning to hurt.

Or rather: Priya’s head was performing the beginning of a hurt with the specific, slight inaccuracy of a performance that was well-constructed but was not the real thing.

She put her fingers to her temple.

era noticed imdiately.

"’Are you okay?’"

"’I’m fine,’" Priya said. "’I think I — the spinning, earlier—’"

"’Oh god, I’m sorry—’"

"’No, it’s — I get motion sensitive sotis,’" Priya said. She looked at Raven. The specific look: ’this is the beat.’

He was not looking at her.

He was looking at the Ferris wheel.

Then he looked at Vikram, still on the call nearby, pacing, and his expression did the specific small thing — the specific, slight adjustnt of a system executing.

From where Priya was standing she did not see him do anything.

She heard Vikram, thirty feet away, make a specific sound.

The kind that had nothing to do with the call.

He said sothing into the phone — an apology, quick, the specific curtailed sentence of soone whose attention has been commanded by an internal ergency. Ended the call.

His expression, walking back toward them, was the specific, slightly pained, slightly embarrassed expression of a man who has discovered that the pav bhaji was not as benign as it presented itself.

"’I have to—’" He gestured in the general direction of the facilities sign. "’Five minutes.’"

"’Oh—’" era, imdiately concerned.

"’I’m fine, the pav bhaji just—’" He was already moving. "’Five minutes.’"

He went.

era looked after him. Then at Priya. Her expression sowhere between sympathetic and amused.

"’The pav bhaji,’" she said.

"’The pav bhaji,’" Priya agreed. Then, pressing her fingers to her temple again: "’I might actually — if you don’t mind — I might take a mont to sit sowhere quiet. The motion thing is getting—’"

"’Of course—’"

"’I’ll co find you in a few minutes,’" Priya said. Standing. Touching era’s arm — the specific, reassuring touch. "’You’ll be okay for a few minutes?’"

"’I am a grown woman,’" era said. The warm, amused register. "’I am a pregnant grown woman standing in a park. I’m fine.’"

Priya looked at Raven.

Who was already standing.

"’I’ll keep her company,’" he said.

The specific, simple sentence delivered to Priya. Then, to era, with the specific, warm directness of soone making an honest offer: "’The Ferris wheel?’"

era looked at it.

Then at Priya.

Who was already moving away, her hand at her temple, toward the specific, quiet bench area near the east pathway.

"’Sure,’" era said.

The gondola was warm.

The specific, enclosed warmth of a glass-and-tal cabin that had been in the sun all day and retained it. Two seats facing forward, the city below beginning its full, Mumbai-night performance — the density of lights, the specific, irreducible visual complexity of it, the water visible at the western horizon catching the last of sothing.

era had her hands in her lap.

He was looking at the city.

"’She talks about you,’" era said.

He looked at her.

"’Priya,’" she said. "’In the three days I’ve known her. She talks about — things, mostly. Consulting work. Assessnt fraworks.’" She paused. "’She doesn’t talk about you specifically. But she talks the way people talk when they’re thinking about soone.’"

He said nothing.

"’You know what I an,’" she said.

"’Yes,’" he said.

The gondola moved upward. The city spreading below them, the park lights small from here, the crowd invisible at this height — just the shapes of things, the geotry of it.

"’Your husband,’" he said.

She looked at him.

"’He’s good,’" he said. Simple. The specific, direct assessnt of soone who has been watching.

Sothing in her face.

"’Yes,’" she said. Not the automatic yes. The specific, arrived-at-it yes of soone who has considered the question and is confirming the answer.

"’I know,’" she said. And then, quieter: "’I know. He’s — he’s very good.’"

The gondola reached its highest point.

The city at full extent below them.

He reached forward, subtly, and snapped his fingers once.

The sound was quiet. The specific, quiet snap that she might have attributed to the cable chanism.

She didn’t look at him.

She was looking at the view.

"’Wait,’" he said.

"’What?’"

"’Look — there. Down there, past the east pathway.’"

She followed the direction of his chin.

The pathway below. The park crowd moving in small groups, the amber lights picking out specific people — and there, toward the facilities sign, two figures.

Walking together.

One of them had a familiar jacket — Priya’s jacket. Narrow shoulders, dark fabric.

The other: a man’s build, dark shirt. era’s internal recognition system running the inventory: height, gait, the specific way the shoulders moved.

They were walking together.

Quickly.

"’Is that—’" she said.

"’Hmm,’" he said. The noncommittal sound.

"’Is that Priya?’"

"’Might be,’" he said. His voice carried no alarm, no pointed observation. Just the specific, neutral quality of soone noting a fact.

She watched.

The two figures reached the facilities block — the specific, institutional building near the east boundary of the park, the sign visible even from here. They stopped for a mont. Then the door to the n’s side. Then both of them through it.

Both.

Together.

era stared.

"’That’s—’" She stopped. "’That can’t be — she said her head hurt—’"

"’Probably nothing,’" he said. Looking at the city again. The specific, easy quality of soone who has noted a thing and is not making a thing of the thing.

"’That was—’" She was still looking at the spot. Her hands, which had been in her lap, had found each other. The specific, gripping-of-one-hand-with-the-other that hands did when sothing had arrived. "’My husband went to the facilities. That’s where he—’"

"’Probably coincidence,’" he said.

"’You saw them go in together,’" she said.

"’I saw two people,’" he said. "’Could be anyone.’"

She looked at him.

He t her eyes.

The specific, purple quality of them. The specific, warm-neutral expression. Not performing innocence — sothing different. The specific, settled quality of soone who has no stake in what she has just decided about what she saw.

The gondola was coming down.

She could feel it.

Her hands, still gripping each other.

She looked at the city.

She looked at the spot where they had gone.

Then she looked at her own hands.

"’It was probably nothing,’" she said.

Not to him.

He said nothing.

The gondola touched the platform.

She was out of it before the attendant had fully opened the door — not running, because she was not a woman who ran in public, but the specific, fast-walking quality of soone whose body had been given a destination and was moving toward it.

"’era—’" He called after her. With the specific, asured quality of soone who is not going to stop her and is not trying to stop her and is giving her the auditory version of restraint, which was the call without the chase.

She was already past the crowd.

He watched her go.

Then he smiled.

The specific, small smile. Not triumphant. The specific, other kind — the one that arrived when a system was running correctly and was watching itself run.

He snapped his fingers.
