Looking at both of them.

Then at Vikram.

Who was watching the scene with the specific, warmly competitive expression of a man who has been inspired.

"’I can do that,’" he said.

"’Vikram—’"

"’Genuinely. I have a notes app. I can plan sothing—’"

"’This is not a competition—’"

"’It’s a little bit a competition,’" he said.

Introductions.

He did them the way he did everything — with the specific, direct attention of soone who was seeing each person for the first ti and had chosen to fully see them. Vikram, he shook hands with in the specific, solid way that n recognized as a peer-signal rather than a status signal. era, he gave the specific, warm attention of soone who had been told about a person and was comparing the person to the information.

"’Raven,’" she said his na, trying it out. "’That’s—’"

"’Unusual,’" he said. "’Yes.’"

"’I was going to say nice,’" she said.

He looked at her.

The specific, direct look. Not the assessed look. Sothing different. The specific, other look — the one Priya recognized and did not fully have a na for. The look that preceded him knowing sothing.

"’Are you pregnant?’" he said.

era looked down at her belly. Which was, in the floral dress, visible.

"’Five months,’" she said.

He chuckled.

The low, specific chuckle. He looked at Vikram.

"’Can I?’"

Vikram, who had been assessing him with the specific, careful attention of a man assessing the man his wife’s new friend had arrived with, looked at his wife. Who nodded.

He crouched.

Not fast. The specific, unhurried movent of soone who was making space for a careful thing. His face at the level of her belly. He pressed his ear against the fabric of the dress — the specific, listening posture, his eyes closing briefly.

era looked at Priya. The expression of soone who has been handled gently and is surprised by it.

Vikram watched.

He straightened.

"’Healthy,’" he said. The specific, simple word. With the specific, warm quality of sothing that was more than an assessnt and less than an announcent.

era’s hand went to her belly.

"’Yes,’" she said. Sothing in her voice. The specific sothing.

The guards had arranged themselves at a periter that was generous enough to give the group space and specific enough that the crowd had stopped pressing in. The effect: a small cleared space in the middle of the Mumbai park evening, warm lights above, the Ferris wheel in the background beginning to glow against the deepening sky.

"’Shall we?’" he said.

The rides.

He was — she had not been prepared for this — good at them.

Not in the showy way. Not in the performing-enjoynt way. The specific, genuine way of soone who had been given a teacup to sit in and had decided to spin it exactly as fast as he wanted it to spin, which was fast, and who had watched era attempt to moderate her own spinning and had quietly, without comnt, added his hand to the wheel when she wasn’t looking and then removed it before she noticed.

The teacup had gone very fast.

era had scread with her hands in the air.

Priya had scread too.

He had looked entirely calm.

"’You did sothing,’" era said, getting off, her dress settling, one hand on her belly, laughing and slightly dizzy. "’I don’t know what you did but the wheel was not—’"

"’The wheel was the wheel,’" he said.

"’It was not—’"

"’Vikram,’" he said, turning to Vikram with the specific, smooth redirect of soone changing subjects, "’the roller coaster—’"

"’The Saturn—’"

"’She can’t,’" he said. Simply. Factual.

Vikram, who had been about to suggest the Saturn coaster, looked at era. Then back.

"’Her obstetrician said mild rides are—’"

"’The Saturn generates 3.2 g on the second drop,’" he said. The specific, delivered information of soone who had looked this up or simply knew it. "’The cervical pressure at that—’"

"’Okay,’" era said. Both hands up. "’I already wasn’t going. You don’t have to—’"

"’You starred it,’" Priya said.

"’I starred it as a wishlist item for after the baby—’"

"’There are four starred rides,’" Priya said.

era pressed her lips together.

Vikram was looking at his wife with the specific, fond expression of soone who has had this exact argunt four tis and will have it four more tis.

"’What,’" era said. To all of them. "’It’s not like I was going to—’"

"’The carousel,’" Raven said. Looking at the map with the specific, resolving quality of soone who has assessed the options and arrived at a position. "’We can do the carousel. And the sky gondola. And the giant swing, which has a maximum of 0.8 g and is specifically approved for second trister.’"

era stared at him.

"’You morized the g-force ratings of—’"

"’No,’" he said. "’I read the map.’"

He had not read the map. Priya had watched him. He had not looked at the map.

She said nothing.

Food arrived from sowhere.

Not the park food — the specific, managed park food that ca in paper containers. The specific, different food that his guards had apparently sourced from sowhere that was not visible and had arrived without announcent: the small table near the sky gondola loading area had acquired a spread of pav bhaji and dosas and the specific, good chai that was not the park’s, served in actual cups.

Vikram, who had been in the middle of eating a diocre park sandwich, looked at the table.

"’Where did—’"

"’Co and eat,’" era said. Already there. She had found the table with the specific, imdiate compass of a pregnant woman who can locate food at fifty ters.

Priya sat across from Raven.

Under the table: his hand found hers. The specific, brief, warm pressure of it. The signal: ’everything is running correctly.’

She pressed back.

Neither of them looked at each other.

Above the table, she was watching era — the way she ate, the way she talked, the way her hand moved to her belly and then to her husband’s arm and then back to her food without interruption, the specific, fluid orbit of a woman whose world had its center located and whose body knew where it was at all tis.

Priya looked at the lotus in her hand. She’d been holding it since the entrance.

He had looked at era in a specific way, twice, that she had catalogued.

Not the assess look. Not the extract look. The other one.

She looked at his face.

He was listening to Vikram describe a drainage issue on the western coastal road with the specific, engaged attention of soone who found infrastructure genuinely interesting, which she suspected he did, because he found everything genuinely interesting in the specific way of soone who had been alive for a very long ti.

He had not looked at era the way he had looked at Preet.

Or Nara.

Or any of the others Priya knew about from the files.

He had looked at her — at her belly, at her laugh — in the specific way you looked at sothing that was in a category that was still being determined.

Priya filed this.

The sky went properly dark.

The park shifted — the dayti crowd thinning, the evening crowd arriving, the specific, different quality of lights that existed now: the Ferris wheel fully illuminated, the pathways in amber, the sky gondola cables disappearing into the dark above and returning carrying their lit cabins.

The food was finished.
