Vikram, who had been three feet ahead, turned.

The group reconvened.

era was already looking at Priya with the specific, genuine curiosity of soone who has been sharing information about their own life for three days and has just received the first reciprocal data point.

"’You have a boyfriend?’" era said.

Priya looked at her.

"’Co on,’" Priya said. "’Am I that ugly?’"

The laugh. The specific, imdiate era laugh, both hands coming up, one covering her mouth, the other still at her belly.

"’That is not what I ant—’"

"’I know what you ant,’" Priya said. And then, because it was true: "’He’s not — typical.’"

"’What does that an?’"

"’It ans,’" Priya said, "’we should wait and you should form your own opinions.’"

She was already running the scene in her head. The specific, rapid calculation of soone who had known he would do sothing and had not known exactly what and was now standing in a park in Mumbai with four minutes of warning and a best friend she’d been assigned to befriend next to her husband who she was supposed to help destabilize and the warm, specific, particular weight of the fact that she was about to introduce him as her boyfriend and she wanted to.

That was the piece she hadn’t fully looked at yet.

She wanted to.

They waited near the entrance. Vikram and Priya standing near each other in the specific, easy proximity of people who had been adopted into the sa circle by the sa woman and had enough in common to have a conversation about things that were not era.

"’Infrastructure,’" Priya said. "’Urban planning specifically.’"

"’The Andheri corridor realignnt?’" Vikram said. The imdiate, energized expression of soone who has been asked about their actual work.

"’I did the impact assessnt on the eastern section last year,’" Priya said. "’For the Bhatt Group.’"

"’That was you?’"

"’It was.’"

"’The water table section was—’" He paused. Reassessing her. The specific reassessnt of soone who has been finding out in incrents that the person they’re talking to has more layers than the initial presentation suggested. "’The water table section was the most complete I’ve read.’"

"’Thank you,’" Priya said.

era, beside them, was watching this exchange with the specific, warm attention of soone who likes watching people she cares about find a point of connection.

Then: a sound.

Not loud. The specific, low, organized sound of an engine that was not straining — the particular note of a vehicle that didn’t need to strain. The Range Rover ca through the main entrance drive at the specific, unhurried pace of sothing that was not in a hurry because it knew people would make room for it.

Which they did.

Not because it was large, though it was. Because of the specific, indefinable quality of it — the way it moved, the way it occupied the road, the way the two vehicles behind it moved with it in the specific, organized way of an arrangent rather than a coincidence.

It stopped.

The door opened.

He ca out.

And the park — the crowd, the lights coming on, the sounds of the rides, the full, Mumbai-evening sensory density of the place — did the specific thing that crowds did when sothing arrived that reorganized the available attention. Not all at once. In the specific, wave-like progression of heads turning, conversations pausing, the involuntary tracking of sothing that the eye had decided was worth tracking.

He was wearing a dark jacket over a shirt, dark trousers, the specific, effortless presentation of soone who had put on clothes in approximately ninety seconds and had achieved sothing that other people planned for. His hands were in his pockets. He was looking at the entrance.

He found Priya.

The purple eyes, at this distance — she could feel them registering rather than see them specifically. The specific, imdiate thing that his attention did.

He raised one hand. The smallest, most casual wave. The wave of soone who has been away and has returned and is communicating: ’I see you.’

Beside Priya: "’Wait—’"

era.

"’Is that—’" She stopped. "’Is he your boyfriend?’"

"’Of course he is,’" Priya said.

era made a sound.

The specific, involuntary sound of soone who has received information and whose body has responded to the information before the filtering process could manage it. She pressed her lips together. Her hand found her belly again.

Beside her: Vikram.

Who had looked at his wife’s expression, and then at the man across the pathway, and then at his wife’s expression again, with the specific, practiced reading of a husband who had been doing this for four years and knew the expression-taxonomy.

He shrugged one shoulder.

"’I’m also about to buy a Range Rover,’" he said. "’I’ve been looking at them.’"

"’Vikram—’"

"’Co on,’" he said. His voice warm. Entirely unbothered. "’I’m just saying.’"

"’You are not saying just that,’" she said.

"’I’m definitely not saying just that,’" he agreed, and she laughed again, the specific laugh, and the hand-on-belly, and Priya looked at both of them and felt sothing she hadn’t been looking at and looked away from it again.

He was walking toward them.

The two guards behind him staying at a distance that was professional and present. Not crowding. Just there.

He walked with the specific quality that she had been watching for four months and still could not fully describe — not arrogance, not the perford confidence of soone who had decided to present themselves a certain way. The specific, quiet certainty of soone who had been here before. Not this park. Sowhere like it. Sothing like this.

He was three feet away.

He stopped.

Looked at her.

Then, with the specific, unhurried motion of soone who has decided and is executing the decision, he went to one knee.

The sound behind him — one of the guards, moving, and the specific, soft, unmistakable sound of a phone’s piano app producing a song that should not have been producible from a phone at park volu, but was, because he had arranged for it to be.

He held out a flower.

Not a ring. Not the perford proposal format. A single flower — a white lotus, which should not have been available from a park entrance and was, because of similar reasons.

He held it up to her.

And looked at her.

The purple eyes.

"’I really missed you,’" he said.

Simple. Clean. With the specific, quiet delivery of soone who ans sothing and has chosen not to decorate it with the architecture of aning it more.

The crowd that had been drifting their attention toward the Range Rover now had its full attention here — the specific, collective tilting of thirty people who have identified that a thing is happening and want to see what the thing is.

Priya looked at the flower.

Her chest was doing sothing.

She was running a calculation. She was absolutely running a calculation — this was the approach, this was the era-activation mont, this was the specific public gesture that had been designed to register in a certain way with a certain target.

She knew this.

She also could not find, in any of her calculations, the category that covered the specific way her throat felt right now.

She took the flower.

He stood.

"’You’re embarrassing,’" she said. The specific, tight register of soone managing their own expression.

"’Yes,’" he said. And smiled. The specific, private smile that she had seen before and that arrived before the public one and was different from it.

Behind her: a small sound.

era, both hands over her mouth.
