We rushed to the next lab that held the next kid as fast as we could.
Behind us, the drones and Psionic Chrysalis were doing their best to slow down the monster chasing after us as best as they could as well.
Unfortunately, it seems like this monster has grown strong enough that it was even able to withstand a direct hit from Lea's coilgun which only left it montarily stunned before it continued the chase once again.
Seems like if we really wanted to kill it, we would need to have bigger firepower than what we currently have.
By my guess, we might need sothing on the scale of an autocannon to pierce through its defenses and that's assuming it doesn't absorb anymore of these transford monsters to strengthen itself.
And I say that because it wasn't consuming the crystals from the normal or even the variant Psionic Chrysalis but it was clear it wanted to consu these ones that had been transford from the kids.
Good thing that we managed to overwhelm it with numbers so it was now out of sight and sowhere behind us.
Speaking of which… Have they actually stopped the countdown tir for this station to blow up yet? Because while the one that was still pulling along had projected a frozen tir in the air earlier, it didn't really do anything special to give the idea that it had stopped the station from blowing up.
Still… The fact that they knew about the tir must an they knew about the station being set to blow and must want to deal with that as well, since the others who were still trapped in those capsules would be blown up with it if they didn't.
I guess I should just trust them for now.
So there should be seven of them and we already got three out with one of them unfortunately being eaten by that monster that was sowhere behind us.
We reached the next Research Lab and this one was being guarded by Chrysalis that looked like so kind of chair except the chair was made out of dark matter and the back rest had spikes poking out of it.
I'm guessing this is a variant that is supposed to be a ranged type? Since I'm assuming they are able to shoot out those spikes.
Just like the Psionic Chrysalis from before, they parted to give way to to approach the capsule.
This ti though, I had an extra thing pulling towards it.
Looking inside the capsule, it seems like this one's another boy as well.
Since this was already our fourth ti doing this, we got the capsule to open up pretty quickly.
The boy floated out and like the other kids before him, his body contorted and twisted, bending into positions that isn't humanly possible.
But instead of his head splitting open, it was his chest that split into half to allow the black matter to spew out from his body.
The black matter then wrapped around the boy and ford a sort of large cocoon.
The cocoon then reford itself into the shape of a figure before it expanded to three tis the size of a normal human.
Oh… This is different… It's not a lizard this ti… I had thought that maybe boys would turn into the lizard and the girls would turn into these err… Dark figures? I have no idea what to call them…
But now this boy turned into a giant buff human figure instead… What even is the criteria for each of these transformations?
As though reading my mind, Mara told through the comms, "I believe the shape they take is dependent on the host. Most likely they take it from the host's imagination on what form they should take."
"And the lizard form?" I asked, gesturing to the large sized lizard who was acting as a sentry at the door.
"Perhaps that's the default form for them? I'm not too sure, Captain."
The default form is a lizard? Why is the default form a lizard? Nevermind… I don't want to know.
I turned to look at the variants, "And I assu that these variants are also made using the hosts' imagination?"
"That is very likely, Captain."
"And what's this about them being 'hosts'? Are these things parasites or sothing?"
Mara paused for a mont before shaking her head, "I wouldn't classify them as such. Rember they had liquified those Psionic Crystals to be injected inside them? They basically ford their own consciousness inside those kids while the original consciousness of those kids were eaten up by them. At least… That's what I can understand from reading their minds. Their thoughts are quite… Jumbled up to be honest."
Oh, so she was reading their minds to figure that out. I thought that she already knew about this sohow.
With another one of these 'kids' secured, the girl Chrysalis pulled out of the room to move to the next Research Lab.
I could see the walls of the station shaking visibly so I assud that the monster was still rampaging sowhere within the corridors of the station.
The next kid we freed was a girl and this one also transford into a humanoid figure that was similar to the first girl but the form she took was an adult form instead of a child one.
She even made herself an elaborate dress made of dark matter too and for so reason, she also decided to latch onto my arm on the other side.
"Mistress sure is popular," Lea muttered from the side.
I don't think this has anything to do with being popular… It's more like they need my help and are trying to pull along aren't they?
And look, they're already pulling to the next place.
For the sixth kid, it was also a girl and she transford into… A fairy sized girl who attached herself onto my shoulder and pushed along while the other two were pulling .
As we were leaving this particular Research Lab, the door suddenly exploded inwards, revealing the giant lizard standing there.
On its back were several of the Psionic Chrysalis variants that were clinging on to it and attacking it.
It let out another roar before smashing its side against the wall, squashing the Chrysalis clinging on its back before turning to regard us.
"Fire!" I ordered, already pulling the trigger and blasting slug round after slug round at the monster.
The projectiles that could tear through power armour only bounced off its scales, doing little to no damage and only serving to annoy it.
The girls opened fire on the monster as well but they mostly had the sa effect, though with the hail of bullets it did make it flinch back.
Shit… We can't even hurt it aside from annoying it, how do we deal with this?
Right then, the Chrysalis variants with spikes also started shooting their own spikes at it.
It seed like the spiked variants were quite effective as it managed to pierce through the monster's psionic shields to embed itself into the lizard's scales.
And even though those spikes might as well be toothpicks considering the size of the monster, it let out a painful roar that shook the room when they struck it.
It imdiately turned its gaze from the transford kids to the spike shooting Chrysalis, its head lowered as though preparing to charge.
Sure enough, it ran towards where the spiked Chrysalis were and completely ignored us, barreling through them and crushing those that couldn't get away in ti under its feet.
"Hurry! While it's distracted! Get out of here!" I yelled, pointing at the door.
All of us made a dash for the door alongside the remaining Chrysalis and drones while the giant lizard was busy stomping the spike shooting Chrysalis.
They were even making it harder for the lizard to kill them all as they spread themselves out around the room, shooting at it from all directions.
"Hmm… Seems like we were right that these Psionic Chrysalis were being controlled by sothing…" Mara mused as she floated beside , our doctor using her telekinesis to propel herself forward.
I turned to see where she was looking to realise that the one that had transford itself into a large humanoid was waving his arms in the air as though he was directing the Chrysalis's movents at the back.
We managed to leave the room without getting its attention and the three transford girls started pulling towards the last Research Lab.
I was half expecting it to chase us from behind but thankfully, that didn't happen and we managed to get to the place quite easily.
The last one was a boy and we released him and the crystal in record ti, allowing him to transform himself while the crystal was already out of its capsule and waiting in front of him.
The boy ended up transforming into so kind of human lizard hybrid where it has a tail and a snout but it was bipedal and had two big, bulky arms.
Incidentally, the Psionic Chrysalis that were guarding the boy also looked the sa as well except they were smaller in size.
Alright, now we've rescued all of them… Now what?
