"There’s sothing at the company, so I won’t be coming over the next couple of days." He knew full well that she didn’t care about these things at all, but still explained it as a matter of routine.
Scarlett indeed showed a disinterested expression, nodding with a tone of indifference: "Oh."
"Call if you need anything." He also understood that under normal circumstances, she would never call him on her own.
That day, Sister-in-law Chapman called to say that she wanted to see him. He was delighted about it, and if it hadn’t been for sothing very important at the ti, he would have co over imdiately.
But now he knew that her reaching out was just for another person.
Scarlett nodded again: "Oh."
Maxwell Saxon never expected her to have any enthusiastic reaction.
He just wanted to inform her of his plans, and even if she gave him no response at all, he would still do it.
He liked to share his itinerary with people he cared about.
"I’m going on a business trip to A Country. Is there any gift you want? I’ll get it for you."
The maid brought over his coat.
His clothes were ironed and washed daily, and the black suit jacket, without a single wrinkle, made him look both vibrant and distinguished.
Scarlett shook her head: "I don’t want anything."
She just wanted to leave, but would he let her go?
He fastened his platinum buttons one by one, and when he reached the top two, his fingers stopped. He then looked up at Scarlett and said, "Co over here."
Scarlett stood still: "What for?"
Maxwell released his hand, looking at her indifferently: "There are two buttons left. You co help fasten them."
Scarlett still didn’t move: "You can button them yourself, why do you need to do it?"
Helping a man with his buttons, especially the top two, seed like an insignificant task, but it carried a special aning.
For Scarlett, soone she would do this for had to be either her closest elder or her partner.
Maxwell smiled, curling his lips: "Oh, if you don’t want to, then forget it. As for going to see Matthew Saxon, we can talk about it when I get back from my trip."
He was subtly threatening her!
Scarlett bit her lip in anger: "Maxwell Saxon, how can you go back on your word?"
"I promised you, but when I go depends on my mood." He curled his lips, putting on a shaless expression, "You know, when people are in a good mood, everything is negotiable. When the mood is bad..."
"Fine, I’ll button them."
Before he could finish his sentence, Scarlett already stood in front of him.
She was a head shorter than him.
Maxwell slightly lowered his head, his chin almost resting on the top of her head.
He slled a faint fragrance in her hair, a very subtle rose scent that was more pleasant than many perfus.
Scarlett, sowhat roughly, tugged at his clothes, but no matter how expensive his coat was, or that the maid spent more than half an hour ironing it, after her rough handling, the collar beca all wrinkled.
She wished she could just tear off the platinum buttons from it.
But the quality of the clothes was too good; no matter how violently she treated it, the buttons didn’t move an inch.
Since it was the top buttons she needed to fasten, Scarlett had to get very close to Maxwell, her face right against his chest. To a bystander, it might even seem like her whole face was buried in his embrace.
