There were many peacekeeping forces from other countries nearby, and she often visited them, learning different languages. In fact, the campsite opposite was the base for the Chinese peacekeeping force, filled with nurous Chinese soldiers. She would go over there to play whenever she was free. She even tilled so land and planted a patch of cabbages herself, leading an enriching life.
Thinking about it, she could hardly believe herself. She used to dream of being an accountant, earning plenty of money to support herself. Now, she had beco a peacekeeping nurse, a job that ca without a salary. Yet, she was neither worried about her food nor inco, and was working with so much enthusiasm.
Chenxing ca back to the dormitory and sat right across from Luo Xi. He snuck bites of the black bread on their shared plate while sipping warm water, and asked her, "Cousin, what are your plans? Are you planning to stay here for good?"
Luo Xi, looking down and tightening her worn-out belt, replied. This belt was a gift from her comrades during her ti as a rcenary, and she was too attached to it to throw it away.
"I don’t know, we’ll see. I am getting tired of staying here. Maybe we could go back to Arica with the next group of peacekeepers in a few days. Let’s see if we can get in touch with our old friends and get back to the old business!"
At that mont, the sound of the dical team assembling echoed from outside their hut.
Chenxing, with a bit of bread in his mouth and a nurse’s uniform in one hand and a bottle of mineral water in the other, rushed out to see what was going on.
Luo Xi moved even faster, darting out to pull over a rushing figure and asked, "What happened?"
"A car full of passengers veered off the road and fell into a ditch. Dozens of people were injured. So locals just ca by asking for help."
"What? I’m coming too."
Luo Xi swiftly climbed onto a tow truck that was about to leave, while Chenxing adroitly climbed onto an ambulance. The peacekeeping forces imdiately set off to the scene with their ambulances, tow trucks, and recovery vehicles.
As soon as they reached the accident site, Chenxing started following the doctors around. The rescue team was busy saving the injured passengers, helping them onto the vehicles while the trapped car was being pulled out of the ditch by the tow truck.
"Chenxing, aspirin!"
"Chenxing, gauze bandages!"
"Chenxing, check the patient’s blood pressure!"
"Chenxing..."
Chenxing was working proficiently and quickly, bustling amidst the chaos.
A passenger with a leg injury was groaning in pain. Chenxing comforted her in the local language while dressing her wound. With her kind features, soothing smile, gentle movents and the nurse’s uniform and cap, the passenger finally stopped groaning and looked at her as if she were a real angel.
"Auntie, your leg is just grazed, and it didn’t hurt your tendons and bones. I will give you so initial treatnt here. Once we get to the hospital, the doctor will take an x-ray to see how you are doing."
"Thank you, young nurse."
"Not at all. This is my duty."
Every ti she heard their heartfelt thanks spoken in thick local accents, she would chuckle to herself, thinking that this was the life she was ant to live, a life filled with aning and needed by others.
"Chenxing, what are you grinning about? Co over here and help hold down this patient’s shoulder." The doctor nudged her, and Chenxing was abruptly pulled from her reverie, and quickly got back to work.
