STRANGER

The morning sun had barely crested the horizon when the stranger appeared.

Shen Chen was at the edge of the camp, practicing his blade forms, his body moving through the motions with fluid precision. The Void Core pulsed within him, a constant source of power that fueled his movents. He had been training for hours, his muscles burning, his mind focused.

And then he felt it.

A presence. Powerful. Unfamiliar.

He stopped mid-motion, his hand going to his blade. His eyes scanned the desert, searching for the source of the disturbance.

Who's there?

A figure erged from the shadows of a nearby rock formation—a tall man, his body wrapped in dark robes, his face hidden beneath a hood. His aura was controlled, asured, but Shen Chen could feel the power radiating from him.

Foundation Establishnt? No... Golden Core. Maybe higher.

The man approached slowly, his hands raised in a gesture of peace.

"I an you no harm," he said, his voice smooth and calm. "I am looking for the leader of this camp."

Shen Chen's eyes narrowed. "Who are you?"

"My na is not important. What matters is the offer I bring."

Shen Chen studied him for a long mont. The man's aura was steady, his posture relaxed. He didn't seem like a threat.

But in the Western Desolation, appearances could be deceiving.

"Wait here," Shen Chen said. "I'll get Old Liu."

---

Old Liu erged from his tent, his eyes sharp and watchful. The bandits had gathered around, their hands resting on their weapons, their expressions wary.

The stranger stood at the center of the camp, his hood still drawn, his presence calm and unhurried.

"You're the leader?" the stranger asked, his eyes fixed on Old Liu.

Old Liu nodded slowly. "I am. Who are you, and what do you want?"

The stranger reached into his robes and produced a small pouch. He tossed it to Old Liu, who caught it with practiced ease.

"Consider that a gesture of goodwill," the stranger said. "I have a proposition for you."

Old Liu opened the pouch, his eyes widening as he saw the contents. Spirit Stones. High-quality ones. Enough to keep the camp running for months.

"That's... that's a lot of Spirit Stones," Old Liu said, his voice carefully neutral. "What kind of proposition requires this kind of paynt?"

The stranger smiled, a thin, knowing expression. "I need you to attack a convoy. A sect convoy from the Eastern Region. It will be passing through the Desolation in three weeks."

Shen Chen's eyes narrowed. The Eastern Region was far from the Western Desolation, a journey of weeks across dangerous terrain. A sect convoy would be heavily guarded, its cargo valuable.

"What's in the convoy?" Shen Chen asked, his voice sharp.

The stranger's eyes flickered toward him, a hint of surprise in his gaze. "You're young to be asking such questions."

"I'm young to be a lot of things," Shen Chen replied, his voice cold. "Answer the question."

The stranger was silent for a mont. Then he nodded slowly.

"The convoy contains ancient resources. Materials from the war between the realms. Receipts of various pill refining techniques, so of which have been lost for millennia."

Shen Chen's heart skipped a beat. Ancient resources. Pill refining receipts. This was exactly the kind of treasure he had been searching for.

"Those materials are valuable," the stranger continued. "But they are also dangerous. The sect that owns them will not give them up easily. That's why I need you."

Old Liu's eyes narrowed. "And what do you get out of this?"

The stranger smiled. "I get what I ca for. A single artifact hidden among the cargo. The rest is yours to keep."

Old Liu was silent for a long mont. Then he spoke, his voice slow and deliberate.

"That's a big risk. Attacking a sect convoy in the middle of the Desolation. Even if we succeed, the sect will co looking for revenge."

"Which is why you'll be paid handsoly," the stranger said. "Enough to disappear. Enough to start a new life sowhere far from here."

The bandits exchanged glances, their expressions a mixture of greed and apprehension. The offer was tempting—more than tempting. It was life-changing.

But it was also dangerous. Deadly dangerous.

Shen Chen stepped forward, his voice calm but firm. "We'll do it."

Old Liu's eyes widened. "Chen, we need to discuss this—"

"There's nothing to discuss," Shen Chen said. "This is exactly the kind of opportunity we've been waiting for. Ancient resources. Pill refining techniques. This could change everything."

The stranger smiled, a satisfied expression. "Good. I'll provide you with the details—the convoy's route, its defenses, its schedule. In three weeks, we'll et at the designated location."

He turned to leave, but paused, his gaze lingering on Shen Chen.

"You're interesting, young one. I'll be watching your progress with great interest."

And then he was gone, vanishing into the desert like a ghost.
